How about a fun Tuesday exercise for the greatest group on the DIS...

We often advocate for biz cards and I have my token list of “businesses” that I share - you know the list, selling on eBay, rental real estate, teaching piano, tutoring, babysitting, consulting, etc.

I know we all already have our go-to “businesses” established now, but what if our awesome group of DISchurners do this:
  • Share what your preferred business is currently for credit card apps (and/or what you’ve used often in the past)
  • Think of one other legitimate way(s) you earned some amount of money in the last year that could be considered a “business”
This could be somewhat interesting for people who are on the fence about biz cards :) I’m interested to see what creative legitimate sources of money our group has!

EDIT: repeats are ok. Original answers are awesome but don’t feel like you need a “new” answer to participate! Repeats could actually be cool to see how many of us have the same potential “business” opportunities.

Ok - I’ll go first.

My current biz apps are based on my ultra successful travel consulting business. ;) Primarily, I provide people with customized advice on how to cover their travel through CC rewards. Revenue was decent last year as Chase and Amex both sent me 1099s for my efforts, LOL! I’ve previously used my wife’s cookie business also.

Other potential businesses for me:
  • Musician: I got paid to play piano at a wedding last year.
  • Personal shopper: I bought some things for my parents to meet MSRs - they reimbursed me but I generated an income on this by combining Ebates and gift card deals to pay for the stuff.
  • Gift card re-seller: as can happen at times as a churner; I had to sell some gift cards.
Interested to see what else people might share here!

On the textbooks....would your local school district provide them....maybe a NY thing but when my kids went to private school our local school district had to get the books they needed...we picked them up at the beginning of the school year and returned them at the end
Ha, highly doubtful given that my 7th grader has yet to have a textbook in public school. I guess they have them for in-class only use. Plus I think they probably use different books since we were given a website where we are purchase them from.

The only reason I didn't mention this one is you have to earn so many dollars before redeeming, so it'll usually be a few surveys before you hit the lowest threshold. It does post faster once you redeem than the other but might end up with same time in, having to do multiple surveys. I like it better for actual earnings but it's less effort on the opinions one if you just need 1 point to reset the clock. If you can get into both that's the best of both worlds.

I agree. I also like that erewards gives me options when cashing in. I do not always redeem for SW. Lately I have been cashing in for IHG.

I may have mentioned this on here before, but certainly in reddit; but the bulk of my spend is legitimate business spend. Not for a company I own, but what I work for. And it’s almost entirely FedEx; to the tune of $25-30k/mo.

So I list myself as a professional or consultant, but still do just my name and SSN as a sole prop. If/when I need to recon, or if I’m doing an in branch bank bonus, etc; I simply tell them I’m a shipping consultant and use this phrase: “My company works with multiple companies to optimize their spend for shipping by leveraging our discounts”. That’s usually more than enough. Throw the words “leverage” and “optimize” in there, and you get no follow ups.
And it’s the truth. I do work with multiple companies (4, in fact) to maximize our shipping. The more companies on our account, the bigger discount we get. Say FedEx gives 50% discount for someone shipping $250k, but if you ship $1 mil you get 60%. Well, if you can pool 4 companies together you can leverage your discounts.

I think the most important thing is to pick something you can easily talk about and (more importantly), something that has truth to it. Full blown fabrication is possible, but it’s not something I would morally be ok with and certainly impacts your character. Points aren’t worth that.

The ironic thing is with the referral 1099s and my valuation and AF deductions I took; I legit have a schedule C business in my taxes. Even with a (now legitimate) business, I still just use shipping consultant as that’s what the spend will be anyway and I don’t want to say “I own a credit card referral business- here, use this link if you want a chase card”.

We have a legitimate rental house across the country, although our tenant is gone and it's back on the market. Fingers crossed we won't have a legit biz to use much longer! But we'll see.

Otherwise, we always buy our cell phones unlocked at full price, and sell our old ones (generally on Swappa) for 60ish% of the new phone cost. I've sold 4-6 phones in the last 12 months, so I am indeed a phone re-seller.

I’ll share too

Current business...
selling on eBay...this is legit I’ve been doing so for probably 20 years...

Other potential businesses...
Childcare...did this as a stay at home mom while my kids were little

If you can work "synergy" in there you'll hit the buzzword trifecta and they'd just have to know you're legit ;)

HA!! Well, I think many of you know about my horse mane braiding business, though some newcomers may not. I would LOVE if someone else here had the same biz!

Business has been low this year since I sold my horse and haven’t been going to horse shows with DH (so I can save my PTO). I’ve braided a couple horses close to home. I actually need to go ahead and make some business purchases since my supplies were stolen when my car was broken into last month :sad2:

I do also sell old clothes/various items on Mercari and Poshmark.

I list eBay that DH runs under my name and his. Business is actually booming. All of the proceeds go into DS’s savings account and it has more than doubled in 2 months. Yesterday DH sold a 2 in My Little Pony that he had purchased from TJ Maxx for $2.99 for $50.

If not eBay, I am going with event planner. My PTA bingos that I put together has always sold out and made a huge profit for the school and my Harry Potter staff appreciation week was a huge hit with the teachers. They kept commenting it was the best week ever and how jealous their teacher friends were. I think I may have missed my calling!

OK - I referee youth soccer at the weekends so that is my current biz.

Could also claim a consulting business, as I did a small project for a company I used to work for.

I buy sports season tickets and then sell them as individual tickets. Some teams you won’t make money on but I found a few good options and make about 5k a year. Plus all that spend goes on a credit card.

I also sell airline Gift Cards that I get for free from churning.

The only things have I sold on eBay were my duplicate AP Disney Magnets. I’m not sure that’s worth my time though anymore lol.

My actual side-hustle is as a solo acoustic musician. I play at bars and restaurants 2-4 times a week.

P2 has been projecting that her eBay business is really going to get off the ground any day now... Funny thing is I am intent on decluttering our house this summer so it is really going to be more legit than ever.

My business was rental real estate when I first applied for biz cards. Now that I've sold the property, my business is freelance writing. I also do some reselling.

I have a legit side hustle. I've been a freelance writer for years. I have an LLC and everything as I've done PR consulting too.

I write several newspaper articles each month.
