Sounds like my oldest son. After two broken wrists he gave up his plans to play pro soccer sadly. I had him involved with DCUnited until we moved and it kind of changed things since there's not an MLS team around here (yet). So the wrists and the loss of DCU being down the street kind of made him lose hope I think. He was great with stats and commentary and I really thought that would be a great career for him. He floundered for about a year and a half and now is a soldier. I miss soccer (youth) so much. My oldest was a figure skater and being an ice mom wasn't too bad, my youngest is softball and it's filling up my time, but I enjoyed soccer mom the most probably because I spent so many years at it. He truly lived and breathed soccer.
DS is 10 and he’s at that point now. He plays on 1 travel team (tryouts tonight for next year) and one park district rec team which means 4 practices a week and usually at least 2 games. Last weekend he had 5 games scheduled Friday thru Sunday (he couldn’t make 1 as 2 were scheduled at the same time) He often gets up early on weekends to watch English Premier League soccer. For some reason, he is not into MLS even though we have a team in Chicago and we’ve gone to some games (and he went to their summer camp a couple years). He thinks he could be a professional soccer player, I know he’s not that good. He also thinks he could be a hockey player even though he’s never played a game in his life and can barely skate. But who needs reality?

I was trying to very mildly explain to a friend at the gym how she could get to Italy in business class on cc points (she is from there and her family still lives there), to say that she wasn't even mildly interested is an understatement. I said she could use points from credit cards for flights, but she said she uses her points for other things o_O. I didn't ask any questions after that as she seems to think that she has the points system mastered, however she uses it. I guess as long as she's happy it's good, but when people tell me they cash out points for gift cards I smile and bite my tongue while inside I'm all :confused::scared::scared:. To each their own I guess!

I love that there is a community of like-minded thinkers on here that I can chat with and learn (a lot) from.
Like my BIL who put airfare to Greece on his Discover Card then transferred it to his Capital One for miles. Um no. But he knows it will work because he “just” charged it to Discover before changing his mind. And those Capital One miles are the best.

My DS did rec and travel last fall and it was so hectic running to games since there were so many make-ups due to rain and the travel games were typically an hour from our home. Since he is going to play for his middle school team at his new school in the fall, we are going to give the soccer through our rec council since he’ll have practice for M-Th plus games.

They're also tempting me with another Casper's offer, $300 off $1500, expires 9/2. I think that's a higher spend than the last one right? Guess they want you to throw in some pillows. @Lain , how is your mattress making out so far?

I love our new Casper mattress!

I got the MR points version of the Amex Offer for 30,000 MR points on $1,500 spend at Casper on several of my MR-earning business cards. Which goes to show @PartyOfSe7en that Amex probably doesn’t care if I buy a bed, pillows, and sheets (which for most people not running an AirBnB or Vrrrrbeau, is going to use them for personal use) on a business card. You’re right that the spend is higher than the $250/25k MR for $1,250 spend offer, but the discount is the same 20%. I added the offer to a card, but I can’t figure how to make this deal profitable without also getting targeted with the $300 statement credit offer and double dipping the two offers. I played with the idea of buying and reselling Casper sheets like @DisneyMandC ’s husband, but they got theirs on clearance and I don’t think I’d break even with only a ~20% margin that’s in points. I’ll keep an eye out for Casper promo codes and sales that might make this deal more worthwhile, and cross my fingers the $300 cash back offer shows up on the same card.

I’m having the same dilemma with the 25,000 MR for $1,000 spend at the Microsoft Store. I don’t know what I’d buy and flip that’d make the deal worthwhile.

I opened CIP #1 on 5/28/18. Is now a good time to cancel? I opened CIP #2 back in March and plan to use that to refer P2 for her own CIP #2.
I'd wait to close the account until you see the annual fee hit. once it hits then you can call or sm to close the account they will refund you the annual fee.

What other cards have you opened in the past 24 months?
9/18 Discover
10/18 BOA
12/18 Chase Sapphire
4/19 Chase Freedom
this looks like it would be your first business card. I would wait a full 3 months to be safe. I've applied for a card in 2 months and I had to call in. I put exactly 3 months and 1 day in between my last two cards and luckily got approved in a day.

Question: I recently signed up for a Chase SW premier for 40k RR with $1k/3 month minimum spend. Today when I go to Southwest website I am seeing an offer for 60k RR with $2k/3 month minimum spend. Is it possible that Chase would change my sign up bonus to the new deal? How do I go about asking them to make that change?

This woman knows her CIPs!

Depending on how recently you signed up they likely will match. You could send them an SM (secure message) from your online account and just politely ask (basically what you said here). :)

I could tell you it’s Rakuten, but I can’t be sure I’m saying it right!

:offtopic:

It’s so ridiculous! What was wrong with Ebates? It rhymes with rebates! I get that Rakuten bought Ebates a few years back, but why bother to change the name now? And then have to spend millions of dollars in tv and radio advertising to teach people how to pronounce the new name. No joke. Even then, I’m not sure the ads are pronouncing it right. Rakuten is a Japanese company, so the “r” sound rolls almost like an “l,” and you take each syllable at a time, so I think it’s supposed to sound something like “Rah-koo-ten,” but the ads make it sound like “Rack-you-ten.” :confused3
Phonetically it's Rah-koo-ten but in real life pronunciation, it's neither. It's Rack-ten with only the tiniest connecting "u" sound between. Changing the name was a bad idea because if people can't pronounce "tempura" properly, they sure aren't going to get "Rakuten."

A lot of people act like any name more complicated than John Smith is just way too strange for them to process. Even then... "I'm calling for... uh... Jay-hoch-en... S... maith? Oh, I probably butchered that! Because it's wildly exotic, get it? Ha ha!"

Should have left it as Ebates. It won't go well.

The chances of my DS getting to play on the middle school team is slim. 1 co-ed team for over 650 students. 5th graders rarely make the team and even kids who play travel teams don’t routinely make it. Just not enough spots. If DS wants to play past 5th grade, travel is about the only choice.
We’ve had a lot of cancellations too. Snowed out even a couple times. Last year we went at least 2 weeks past “end of season” with make up games. Right now rec coach is trying to reschedule a game for tomorrow night, which is travel team practice night.

I was planning to apply for the CIP card, but I do not have $5000 in business expenses coming my way. Maybe like $300 in the next 90 days. How do you manage this when applying? I definitely have $5000 in personal expenses but not business.

I will pile on with my feelings. It does say in the terms when you apply that it is only for business expenses, which gave me pause when I applied. As everyone else has said, I have used it for personal expenses to meet the MSR.

There have been several pages of discussion on what people's businesses are - I hesitated for years because I have no business, so my applications are a complete fraud. And I do have some guilt feelings about that. However, I have 2 CIP's and DH has one, so I have gotten past it.

Oh, and my youngest played travel lacrosse for 5 years. We traveled to NY, NJ, MD, and VA, plus one Jan trip to Palm Springs CA. She loved it, the travel team definitely helped her develop her skills, and she played 2 years in college (D3 so pretty laid back experience and no scholarships). When she was job interviewing the lacrosse was brought up on more than one occasion by interviewers, I guess as an indication she was more than just a comp sci nerd?

Guys, I’m so upset I’m not sure what to do. As mentioned here last night, there was a tragic crash of 2 floatplanes full of tourists in Alaska yesterday. I booked a floatplane tour for us on our cruise in 2 weeks. While I’m really sad and upset for those that lost their lives, I also don’t know what to do about our tour. I booked thru Chase portal with URs, 55,000 Points, and it’s non-refundable. So do I cancel and move on? Or suck it up and go?

We hit the spend for Dh’s CIP #2 last week and I’m not seeing the SUB pending yet. Do you think it’ll be on the next statement?

Not really helpful but I (DH) is in the same boat. I made the qualifying charge ($2000) last week and while those points are showing pending nothing as far as sign up bonus. Makes me a little nervous!

And on that note, I got my first Ebates MR payout yesterday! 19k and some odd MRs! I’m now sitting on 670k MR!

My Ebates MR posted too! Easy way to earn points. I know have 370k. Not 670k but not bad since I just started last September. Ebates for MR was especially nice for Amazon which is not on the usual portals I use.

Reminds, I ordered pizza from Domino’s last week as a stop gap measure to ensure the teachers had enough food and when the girl asked for the expiration date I said Nov 2020. And she said no, what number is that? Seriously, you can’t translate Nov to 11????
