The VRBO commercials annoy the heck out of me. I've always said each letter and could swear I've always heard it pronounced this way. I cannot come to grips with saying "vrrrbeau". I just will not say it that way. It sounds like crazy talk to me! It's kind of like SUB - just can't get used to it. :rolleyes1

I did just see one of those commercials! And said "huh, really? that's not a thing" :sad2:

It was pronounced as V R B O, I guess they're trying to be hip now

So glad it's not just me!

Guys, I’m so upset I’m not sure what to do. As mentioned here last night, there was a tragic crash of 2 floatplanes full of tourists in Alaska yesterday. I booked a floatplane tour for us on our cruise in 2 weeks. While I’m really sad and upset for those that lost their lives, I also don’t know what to do about our tour. I booked thru Chase portal with URs, 55,000 Points, and it’s non-refundable. So do I cancel and move on? Or suck it up and go?

Honestly, I'd call and see if you can cancel it due to the crash yesterday and say you're concerned about safety. I know it's through Chase and it might take a HUCA but I would try. Is your rez with the same company? If it is I'd use that and that you aren't even sure they'll have planes/be flying then and you want to cancel. I know it's an unfortunate and sad situation and it's not that you want to exploit it, but still safety and peace of mind and all. Worst thing is they'll say no. But I'd call today while it's all still fresh in people's minds.

Only you can answer that question.......do what you feel comfortable with. No point going if you (or anyone with you) will be a nervous wreck because of the recent incident. It would ruin the whole experience.

If it was me...I would go....but you probably figured out by now that I'm not you. :P

So give it a few days.....see how you feel.....and go with what feels best. Good luck.

On the businesses for business card applications front we are both completely legitimate and not so much.

DH got his first business card only after getting a DBA and a city license and federal license. It is cerakoting and he actually needed the first CIP to buy the expensive equipment such as a blasting cabinet and oven. In fact, when I applied I did it under the business name since I didn’t know any better. Everytime I do a card for him with Chase I think this is the about the only business that falls under “heat treating” and “other.”

For myself I am probably more like @georgina with feeling like a “complete fraud.” I have just did it with Chase in the past as selling online. I figure I am on DH’s licenses so I could help him sell online even though I haven’t. For Amex I have done it as more as travel consulting. For my next CIP in a couple weeks I am going to put it as travel etc and see what happens. The reason for shaking it up is I plan to put $5,000 on it right after the bat to pay for my DVC. That way if it is questioned it is legitimate as to the business (i.e. travel/renting DVC points). Hopefully that will work and be a good plan. :)

Just watching the news and they mentioned the name of the tour operator: Taquan Air. Says they have suspended operations. Can you see who your tour was operated by.

I was in a similar situation over spring break. I had used almost 80K points on a boat trip in Nassau. We woke up to weather in the 60s, 20 mph winds and white caps visible from our balcony. I hadn’t heard from the tour operator about cancellation. We all decided it wasn’t going to be safe or fun and that we’d eat the cost. We called to cancel and the tour operator decided to cancel. Took a while for the refund, but I did get it.

If you have ANY hesitations, cancel. It’s just points. You can always earn more!

How about a fun Tuesday exercise for the greatest group on the DIS...

We often advocate for biz cards and I have my token list of “businesses” that I share - you know the list, selling on eBay, rental real estate, teaching piano, tutoring, babysitting, consulting, etc.

I know we all already have our go-to “businesses” established now, but what if our awesome group of DISchurners do this:
  • Share what your preferred business is currently for credit card apps (and/or what you’ve used often in the past)
  • Think of one other legitimate way(s) you earned some amount of money in the last year that could be considered a “business”
This could be somewhat interesting for people who are on the fence about biz cards :) I’m interested to see what creative legitimate sources of money our group has!

EDIT: repeats are ok. Original answers are awesome but don’t feel like you need a “new” answer to participate! Repeats could actually be cool to see how many of us have the same potential “business” opportunities.

My mom (who became a widow at 39 and takes care of my handicap brother at the age of 84-sorry, just have to write that because I have so much respect for her because she did not have an easy life), has accumulated a decent estate. She was always a hard worker and a great saver and she worked for a company that gave her stock that did extremely well. Now that she is getting older, she is sharing her good fortune with my sister and I. My sister and I help her out a lot, especially since she has my brother to take care of and she gives us money here and there. We never expect anything but as she says, "you can't take it with you" and she would rather give it to us when we need it. Since we are helping her with tasks and she gives us money, I list it under a business. I used to clean my sister's house when I was in college for extra money also.

My big news for today is that my referral bonus for my referral of the CIP to DH posted! Background is that I had CIP. I referred DH. He was approved and my referral points were pending. Before they posted I was worried about the AF being past 30 days and closed my CIP account. After that instead of moving from pending to posted the points were just hanging out in pending and have been pending the last 3 weeks. Site stated that they would post on statement close on 5/13. Problem being of course that account is clearly closed. On the advice of @Lain and @SouthFayetteFan I even tried to reopen the CIP or product change. I was pretty convinced the points would disappear but my minor miracle occurred and they posted. I was able to move to my CSR and all good now. So big thanks to @palhockeymomof2! The pixie dust you wished on me yesterday worked!

I cannot confirm or deny over whether or not I inexplicably got up at 2 am to get on the Chase UR site and check to see if they posted or disappeared...

I'm sorry :( I know things like this are tragic and rare and probably won't happen again anytime soon but I can understand why you are nervous. I haven't read here at all today but just saw your post and I would call and see if they will wave the nonrefundable policy. If you feel it would still be enjoyable, then I say go and know that the chances of anything happening on your tour are slim to none.

Oh thank goodness!

So glad you got the points.:woohoo:

Not to be a downer, but apparently they had an incident last year too. :(

We hit the spend for Dh’s CIP #2 last week and I’m not seeing the SUB pending yet. Do you think it’ll be on the next statement?

Not really helpful but I (DH) is in the same boat. I made the qualifying charge ($2000) last week and while those points are showing pending nothing as far as sign up bonus. Makes me a little nervous!

I wonder if we’re seeing another delay in Chase bonuses going pending.

Hey y'all! Happy Tuesday! I'm not caught up at all on the thread but just wanted to say a quick hi.

I've been super busy today with field day for our homeschool co-op and then, get this, @Lain, I took my boys to McDonald's!!!! And, another first, they got to play in the 'Play Place' :cutie: My dh said I was like 'coolest mom ever' today...Field day and then eating IN at McD's! My boys were just gushing the "thank you's" when I said "yes, we are eating inside!".

Then a playdate...we really do *sometimes* do school. But mostly, we socialize lol. It's the fault of the people who told me my kids would be tragically 'unsocialized' :rotfl2:

Now, I'm getting ready to head out with my girls to see Wicked for dd19's b-day. I'll try to catch up tonight!

Congrats to all the approvals and posting of CIP points!

There were 2 planes, the second operator has not been named (or not that I can find). Ours is thru Seawind Aviation. Apparently everyone who booked thru DCL, regardless of operator, had their excursions canceled by DCL. At least on next week’s cruise (ours is the second of the season) I know it’s just points but besides that I’m just torn on whether we should go. If I didn’t have a kid, I’d probably go. But once I had a kid, I got way more conservative about stuff like this.

Taquan has seemed to have more. The last incident I could find with the place we booked was 2007. But still. In the 2007 accident, nearly a whole family was killed: mom, dad, 3 year old twins, grandpa. I think only grandma survived. Can’t imagine
