The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: who knows? It's Ohio. Yesterday it was 87 and humid. Today it is in the 50s and dropping like a rock.

Same here in Nebraska, who knows! We had 90s last week, but are 50s yesterday & today, but will warm back up tomorrow and this week. A weather roller coaster.

Lots of rain and more rain chances this week too.

ATTQOTD: High 80s/Low 90s but only 50-60% humidity....70s in the morning with 100% humidity so I'll be adjusting my workouts to the morning. Little rain tonight will bring a cold front of high 70s the next 2 days, then back up to mid 90s for MDW!

ATTQOTD well and truly autumn here which means mostly perfect temps. Lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s. We have started to see more rain and wind in the last week or so. Winter for us starts June 1st and the unpleasant weather (read rain) starts July..

ATTQOTD: Nice Spring weather here. Totally enjoying it. The trees have their new leaves, very light green. Beautiful.

ATTQOTD: hot and humid in central FL. Lots of beautiful sunshine though! I own a treadmill now so I’m not dreading the weather too much.

ATTQOTD: Echoing @Disney at Heart: hot in NE GA. I run in the mornings and it's already hitting 70 degrees with 100% humidity (we don't have anything less than 100%!)
As has happened the last couple of years, spring and good weather only lasted about 2 weeks.

I always say I'd rather run on the hottest day of the year rather than the coldest, but I'm beginning to rethink that.

ATTQOTD- Virginia weather has been rain, followed by more rain, then sunshine and 80+ temps, followed by more rain.
I'm more of a cold weather runner and this weather pattern might force me to "hibernate" for a while.

Very nice temps and no humidity in western MA right now, Saturday was 60 in the morning, tomorrow should be 65 after work, so really nice for a run. It’s New England though so wait a few minutes, it will change.

So happy I made the trip and even more happy I BQed.... Boston 2020 here I come
Great job!

Today is my anniversary!
Congratulations. My parents are fast approaching their 50th.

As we waited, tortillas got flung around. Because that's what you do at Bay to Breakers.
My brain seems to think that people "ran" it in a bathtub one year with one person taking turns in the bathtub while the others pushed it. I don't think they televise it anymore due to the nudity.

I’m one of the few who has not watched a single episode of GOT. Never have the time.

As for weather in CO, I woke up at 3pm to run. It was pouring rain with ice balls and snowflakes mixed in. I went back to bed. I just stepped outside at work and this is happening. Can it stop snowing already.

Colfax Marathon quick recap:

I finished. :) 4:40:20.

I was trying to take it easy, but the hills (long steady uphill) and altitude definitely slowed me down more than I would have liked. Using findmymarathon.com’s race converter, this time was very comparable to my last two easy effort marathons, so that helped me feel better about it afterwards.

The race was okay. Liked the scenery in some areas, and in other areas just your standard business street running. The weather was great for running. Started out in the mid to upper 30s, finished in the mid-40s with just a slight breeze, and it was overcast. My biggest complaint is that the last 6ish miles, the water stops were 2+ miles apart. In the middle they were closer together, but at the end most marathons that I have run, the water stations are closer to a mile apart, and I could have definitely used more water at the end - I had ran out of water in my water bottle.

Now it’s time take a short break, recover, and then get ready for another PR attempt (at breaking 4!) in the fall with my next @DopeyBadger plan!

QOTD: How do you balance running and real life (job, family, relationships, financial, and other things)?

ATTQOTD: It's a difficult balancing act at times for sure. As my situation has changed (second child) it has become even more of a challenge. With just one child it was easy to just put her in the jogging stroller and go for a run. With two, that step is not as easy. Their schedule is different and by the time I would have everything ready to go it would likely be mid-morning lol. Currently, the best option is to run early in the morning, around 5AM (rarely happens, but needs to happen more) or at night. On occasion a afternoon run can happen as well. Running while important to me, sometimes has to take a back seat to taking care of the family first.

QOTD: How do you balance running and real life (job, family, relationships, financial, and other things)?

I am a good point in my life to pursue running. My kids are out of the house. Well, they were, until DD20 moved back in last month, but that's another story. Having the kids gone and a wife who routinely works into the evening with her job reduces the conflicts and frictions around the time spent running immensely. It also helps that I'm not an inherently social person, so I don't have dinner dates, parties or other social obligations that routinely conflict. I do try to be sensitive to the amount of time I spend running, so if DW has a bad day at work and needs to go to dinner to decompress, for example, I'll rearrange my schedule so that I can do that. I actually find that the time I spend running helps me balance other aspects of my life. If I'm sitting around the house watching TV or waiting for DW to come home, I'll tend to snack or shop online out of boredom. Running helps divert my attention from those destructive behaviors. That's balanced a bit by the extra cost for running gear, race fees and travel costs, but hey, that's a price I'm willing to pay...

QOTD: How do you balance running and real life (job, family, relationships, financial, and other things)?

It's certainly a lot and not easy. My only daughter is 5 which makes it easier as she is somewhat self sufficient. And if I'm biking it's easy for her to come down, get me, and I can take a tiny break to help her with something.

My weekday schedule is:

4:30am - Wake up
4:50am - 80 Day Obsession with wife
5:50am - Shower
6:20am - Make eggs/oatmeal
7:00am - Leave for work
5:00pm - Arrive home from work
5:15pm - Start cycling or running workout. Usually 60-90 minutes.
6:45pm - Finish workout and stretch
7:00pm - Make lunch for the following day. Depending on wife's schedule, I may have to make dinner. Also, on Monday's 75% of the time I have to drive back to Madison (60 min round trip) and pick up my wife from work.
7:15pm - Eat dinner.
7:30-8:30pm - Play with G.
8:30pm - Go to bed

On the weekends:

4:30am or 7:30am - Wake up. Depends on whether Steph has to work. If she works, I have to get all running finished before she needs to leave.
Usually till 10-11am - Working out.
11am - Eat breakfast
Most of day - Play with G.
2pm - Eat lunch
6pm - Eat dinner
8:30pm - Go to bed.

This gets me about 14-16 hours of exercise a week. So during the week, there's little extra time in my day. During the weekend, I try and get most everything done before 11am, or before G wakes up depending on my wife's schedule.

My job is fairly flexible. I get plenty of vacation and personal holidays. So last Summer/Fall I took off days where training was going to exceed 90 min on a weekday. This coming Summer/Fall, I've got a 9 Thursday workouts in the 2-3.5 hour range. So I'm likely to take those days off from work. Additionally, I've got 8 more in the 90-120 min range that I'll just wake up at 3:30am-4:30am to do in the morning.

My family is super supportive and has been consistently for the 7 years I've been doing this (only recently as the duration gotten this high). I do a good job of knowing all the schedules and trying to accomodate others before myself. So I usually ask my wife what time I need to be done by, and then I just adjust my schedule to that.

ATTQOTD: I'm not. Life is too busy right now and running had to take a back seat. I think it would be different if I could run where I live or I lived somewhere where it was safe to run. I wish I could just get up and go out the door instead of driving 15-20 minutes. That doesn't sound too bad except then I have to drive back and shower before work and I already get up at 5:00 to be at work so I guess I am not dedicated enough that I want to get up at 3:00 a.m. :confused3

QOTD: How do you balance running and real life (job, family, relationships, financial, and other things)?
I have trouble with this at times but I am sure everyone does. Sometimes its just harder to make time for running. Running to me does help clear the mind of those other stresses though so it can be a good thing to just go out and get it done.
