So we're finally making the plunge and looking to buy a resale DVC contract. Our favorite resort is BCV but we're probably going to buy OKW or SSR for the great price per point. I'm just curious to hear from existing members on the availability at BCV at 7 months out. We're planning on buying a large point contract so a 1 bedroom would be fine. Also, BWV's is our 2nd favorite :p

Thanks everyone for your great knowledge!!

Dan

Don't buy SSR expecting regular BCV or BWV studios 7 months out. While they have been possible in off-season (spring/summer) mostly, the trend of people buying small contracts to stay at those resorts is likely to create more difficulty.

1BR is more likely but even so, in fall it can be a challenge.

Are you planning to travel in peak season in the fall, or 90% of the time in mid-summer?

Fall travel currently means buy where you want to stay and book at 11 months out. Summer is a little more flexible but point reallocations can change that math at any time.

SSR expires 2054 and some OKW expire 2057 (compared to 2042 at the Epcot resorts) and they can be great deals, but that won't do you any good if you are frustrated by not being at BCV or BWV.

Here are some additional threads to read before you buy a resort but don't want to stay there:

Don't plan on getting BCV or BWV from Sept through the marathon in January at seven months out. We did get a BCV one bedroom in early May this year for Flower & Garden, but I booked that exactly at seven months out. If you really want to book BWV or BCV, buy your points there. Then you book what you need at eleven months out and be happy.

Thanks everyone for the great info! I think we’ll definitely buy into one of the boardwalk area resorts.

Do you recommend buying a small contract at the higher priced resort and getting the larger contract at a lower per point resort?

Keep in mind that you cannot mix points from different resorts until the 7 month window. You could not buy BWV and BCV and combine pts at 11 months. You could book standard view BWV villas with the BWV contract at 11 months out, but the BCV points would be sidelined for booking BWV until 7 months out.

I would buy the larger contract at the resort you prefer the most.

Buy the larger contract at the resort you want to stay at the most and would be disappointed if you couldn't book there at seven months out with your other points.

Please, please buy where you want to stay/like/don't mind staying at and you might not be disappointed.

We love the Epcot resort area. My grown kids also love the area. We book at Beach Club as soon as our 11 month window opens up. We also own at OKW and both my sons own at SSR. for many years, they were able to switch at the 7 month mark. The last couple of years.......forget it. Sometimes............... BWVs comes through. If you really want to stay at one of these resorts, I strongly suggest buying one of them.

As much as I hate buying any additional points that expire in 2042, I have been browsing the resale sites for any BCV points for my UY. Very hard to come by. Touch decision to make.

Unless you are planning on having two favorite home resorts you stay at, buy all your points at the resort you want to stay at. Don't buy SSR points unless you intend to stay at SSR with those points - switching at seven months IF there is availability. As was said, you can't mix your points - a small BWV contract will not get you the home resort window with SSR points - just with the small number of BWV points you own.

Thanks so much everyone! I didnt even know you had to have all the points at your home resort for the 11 month window. Ya'll are a god send!! :)

Buy where you don't mind staying. And hopefully at 7 months you can snag one of your preferred resorts. The answer to your question on availability is -- it depends. It depends on when you are looking to travel. If you want to travel between mid Sept to Mid Jan then you will not get BC, unless you get real lucky. But other times of the year getting a 1BR should happen. Forget getting a studio at BC. I never see those (I have been tracking availability)

Keep in mind not all 1BR are created equal. Something I can't really understand is that BC, BW and I think SSR - They will say they sleep 5 but you are responsible for the sleeping surface. you would think that DVC (for a fee) would provide a roll away bed of some sort. Also if you have 5 don't try to book a 1BR at CCV -- they only sleep 4.

If you do choose to buy a different resort OKW (extended) and SSR would be a good deal and if you are flexible with your traveling times then you should be able to try out different resorts using your less expensive points. It is tough to justify buying into BC for the high resale prices and have the contract expire in 2042.

Still no guarantee for fall dates or run events at BCV/BWV, certainly, though.
And more to the point, the system may work for SSR now, but given how Disney is actively altering the product by implementing restrictions to really dissuade the intentions of buying cheap (SSR/OKW and AKV to an extent) and staying elsewhere, and how Disney is reallocating point charts that don't at all address membership needs/booking issues, I hesitate to recommend buying cheap points unless 1- you don't mind staying at [insert cheaper alternative here], or 2 - you are never able to book in the 7-11 month period.

Outside of those two instances, the "buy dirt cheap and roll the dice at 7-months" plan adds a layer of risk on top of the inherent risks of timeshare ownership, despite the fact that the process works well today for 1BRs, as Wakey rightfully points out.

With a Disney timeshare you're agreeing to pay 23 plus years of ADs. Do you really want to save a few dollars at the front end and be stuck holding the bag if Disney decides resale bookings should be crippled even further? Owners (like me and Wakey) make SSR work now, but if I had a time machine, I would not have bought my SSR and would've paid the little bit extra for an AKV contract instead; a resort I've since learned I would be happy to be "stuck" at.

...
Those resorts that sleep five in a one bedroom but you must provide your own bed and bedding don't have the room in the living room for either a murphy bed or sleeper chair because of the layout of the living room, kitchen and connecting studio. That means there is no room for a rollaway either.

This is a good post. Follow-up question: When looking to purchase now, the Deed Year comes into play even more with the Epcot resorts. I am in my early 30's looking to purchase. By the time the deed is up on BCV & BWV, I will be mid 50's and my kids will be late 20's. Does not seem like I am getting my value (even on resale). What would you suggest

Are you ready for nearly $20 a point annual fees in 2041?

I was about your age when I first purchased and had the same issue. I couldn't bring myself to buy a 2042 resort no matter how much I love some of them. We ended up purchasing at SSR since we have never booked more than 7 months out. If we would ever start to book 11 months out we enjoy SSR so no issue. Having said that, SSR is not the same as the Epcot resorts.
