Late to the party

I’ve been hearing about Black Mirror for at least a year and never gave it much thought. Last weekend I decided to give it a shot because I saw it on Netflix.

Holy cow this show is amazing!!

I had read a few reviews online first and went into the first episode with no expectations. For those who don’t remember, the first episode is the one with the Prime Minister and a kidnapping. After the episode was done I really had to sit and think about it. I didn’t know each episode was self contained so I had NO idea how they could top that in episode two.

I’m about to watch White Christmas which is the last episode of the second season. All the episodes have been good, but some aren’t as good as others. So far, six episodes in, I’d have to say the Waldo one is my least favourite so far.

So, anyway, to the point of the thread. Is there a tv show or movie that has been popular for ages and you’re just discovering it now? Has it lived up to the hype?

Oh, no spoilers on Black Mirror please. If you want to talk about a specific episode, put it in a spoiler tag please.

I've never even heard of Black Mirror. Now I'll have to look at it.

I love Black Mirror, but I hate that the latest season was only 3 episodes. No other shows of late are this good, to me.

I came "late to the party" on both Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Mad Men started off amazing and slowly fizzled until it's (overdue) end. Breaking Bad was just the opposite - it was almost impossible for it to keep getting better but it did. A superb series finale too.

:scared: As for Black Mirror, I couldn't get through the single episode I tried to watch. Just way too disturbing and very little entertainment value, for me anyway.

I never watch a show until it has been around a couple of seasons at least. Then I binge watch the first couple. I'm just so sick of getting into a show only to see it cancelled.

There are five seasons of Black Mirror. Of course, there are only five or six episodes per season with only three episodes the first season.

Breaking Bad was SO GOOD. I’ve watched it all the way twice now.

If you watched the first episode of Black Mirror, I can see anyone being turned off. To say the subject matter was disturbing is an understatement.

Black Mirror is hard to describe. It’s set in a universe where technology is even more a part of daily life than it is now. But, not just like smartphones and Siri’s, it’s like a memory chip in your brain that allows you to replay moments over and over and delete the ones you don’t like. That’s just one example of one episode.

You’re either going to love it or wonder what you just watched lol

For me it was Outlander about a year and a half ago. There are a few other series I want to see. Life is just too busy right now.

If the one you're referring to is the pig one, NO, I didn't see it. I would have had to set my tv on fire and wash my eyes out with bleach if I had. What little I've heard of it is more than I can even stand to contemplate. The one I saw was probably fairly innocuous - it was about "social capital"; before I knew that was a real thing.

I think that’s the next episode for me.

Thankfully, I have finally forgotten what exactly it was about it that bothered me so much. At the time though I just simply could not continue watching. I'm a very linear thinker and have a distinct visual and auditory learning style. Images with audio is my double-whammy for haunting brain-worms. The kind of content in Black Mirror is just too much, and for no good reason.

I just watched it and thought it was a pretty good take on how we all live our lives for likes now.

No, no, no to Black Mirror. Pig episode turned me off.

Three shows come to mind that were very popular & I never wanted to watch but thanks to Netflix I have successfully binged all seasons of:
Breaking Bad
Lost
Friends
Now thanks to Hulu I am addicted to 24.

Was also "late" to Downton Abbey. Daughter kept talking about how good it was and finally when I was recouping at home after hip surgery, I watched all of those.

I wish Lost was on Netflix. I’d binge it all over again.

I’d describe the show as an updated version of the Twilight Zone that focuses on the dangers of technology. The chose your own adventure movie one freaked me out.

I really don’t want to spoil anything for myself by looking online. Do you know the name of that episode? Was it in season four or five? I really hope it’s on Netflix.
