UPDATED 01/14/20 - The FW DISMeet 2020-See Post #283 For Latest News and Updates

Hello! First post and pardon my ignorance... what is a DISMEET? We are staying at the Fort for Halloween 2020 (thanks to the DIS video on walking a reservation!! YAY!). How do I get in the in-crowd for this event?

THANKS!!!

Our paperwork is in and hope to hear back tomorrow about our reservation. We will be in from the 11th until the 17th. We wish we could have made it a longer trip, but new job and vacation is limited for a time. Also trying to get to Germany next year for a trip (the real one, not Epcot.)
Our reservation is made and linked in MDE, is it too early to book fastpasses for Rise of the Resistance ???

enyoc, :welcome: to the DIS Camping Forum :disrocks: We were all new members once!

What is a DISMeet? A DISMeet is a meeting or gathering or DIS members. A group of us from the Southeast started getting together five years ago on Memorial Day weekend and week following to camp together (because camping is what we do, right?) and meet in person. We call it the Gulf DISMeet because it occurs on the Gulf Coast in Alabama at Gulf State Park. Last month was our fourth gathering (year zero was only two of us but that's how it has grown). We had 10-11 campsites this year (30 people at our main group dinner night) and that was with two last minute cancellations. We eat together some nights at the campground (excellent cooks in the group) and other nights we do our own thing. We did one day together to sightsee but generally folks do their own thing. But we walk around and talk to those of us who are there and it's nice to get to know the face and people who are behind the DIS user names you encounter. There is also a Midwest DISMeet group that is in year two or three. Here is the thread on the Community Board from this most recent Gulf DISMeet:

Gulf DISMeet 4 Thread and we all roll in starting on page 18 if you want to start seeing the pictures.

Anyway at Gulf last year (2018), we kicked around the idea "hey wouldn't this be fun to get together and do this at Fort Wilderness (which we all have in common)". So last year at this time I started a thread to gauge if there was any interest:

https://www.disboards.com/threads/who-is-up-for-a-fort-wilderness-dismeet-discussion-thread.3689372/

And there was interest. But people have long planning cycles (some of them) for a Disney trip so we had a second thread (a poll actually) as to what time of year to try to attempt this:

https://www.disboards.com/threads/the-fort-wilderness-dismeet-poll.3690908/

Remember this was June 2018. I was hoping people would vote for October 2019. But actually you can see October 2020 won the poll. So now here we are trying to pull this off.

Obviously WDW is different than camping on the Gulf Coast in an Alabama state park. You can pack a WDW vacation full of activities. We have a group contract to ensure that we can camp together in the same loop(s) based on site category and we plan an opening/welcome event sometime in the first full day. But it's not the Brazilian Tour Group model of 80 people walking together from Jungle Cruise to ride Pirates together. The fun is in the evenings, mornings, and days off maybe meeting a DISser whose name you recognize and find out their name is Joe and they live in the Atlanta area and they camp about 10 days a year with their dogs and grandkids (etc. etc. etc.). Or sitting at night telling stories. Or watching your neighbors arrive with their trailer in tow trying to back in with the wife giving the spotting directions to the husband. That kind of fun. We have some rough ideas for some fun activities at this point but we're just getting the signup now. But it can be do your own thing as much as you want.

I've been to the Fort just about annually and via this board have learned other DIS'sers were going to be there too so I have made the effort in the past to go meet them (or them me) and we say hello to each other. It's been very rewarding. But campers are generally a little more laid back and outgoing so it works.

So that's what we're trying to pull off starting with post #2. Who knew the planning would fall in the midst of the Star Wars/DHS hysteria. You'll enjoy Halloween at the Fort (I checked that off my bucket list in 2017). But we'll be there a few weeks before you.

Hope this answers your question (I get accused of being long winded ).

... our second favorite thing to do at the fort!

Thank you sir for the warm welcome!

My better half would love to hang out with DISsers (me too) - we watch every DIS video and would enjoy the opp to be a part of the community. We'll definitely try to join in someday!

Last year we stayed at the fort 5 times, this year only twice, it's our happy spot.

Thanks again!

Out in the shop now working on some site decorations. Have to start early to keep one step ahead of @tiggerdad, I hear he has big plans...
The DW has big plans too. Y'all better watch out!

PS, I just noticed you joined the boards a little less than a month after I did. Too funny

We are looking to have a surprise or two for the Dismeet. Our nephews may also be joining us for this trip, but nothing is laid in stone, they would be 15 and 9 at the time.

And we have plenty of room to store decorations......

Word on the street is that @tiggerdad is planning a MJ Thriller / Disney 13 minute 46 second haunted campsite ride complete with haunted Mississippi doombuggies with crazy one armed Mississippi squirrels as your tour guide... :squirrel:

I decided to keep with the two arm squirrels. This allows them to hold the torches and still drive. Mississippi doombuggies are also known as shopping carts. Not the Wal-Mart or Target ones, those are too high profile, these are the Dollar Tree and Dollar General kind.

It's not a half way bad idea to go for a little competition among us Disers on this meet for site decorations. I'm all in for some fun like that. However, there is likely to be an unfair advantage to those who got the campsites close to the elevators though.

:cheer2: We are officially booked! Arriving Sunday October 4th ( 2 days before my birthday!) and leaving Sunday October 18th!

We won’t be in the same loop as everyone (we’re going to try our best to be in the 1400 loop—That ones pretty special to us :lovestruc::yes::) but we can’t wait to see those of you we’ve met in the past, and also so excited to meet all of you who we haven’t met!

Just a reminder before we get the registration process going:

I will be communicating with people interested in registration via the DIS Private Message (PM) system (it's the little envelope symbol on the new blue DIS menu bar on the right side next to your user name when you are logged in). Some people for some reason do not allow others to create a PM to them. I have encountered this in the past - when I list the names of who will receive a PM that I start, when I type their name a dialog box pops up that says "so-and-so is not accepting PM's" or words to that effect.

Thus I am posting here, now for posterity, to check your settings if you want to receive a PM regarding the registration process before we kick it off. Here is how you do that:

  1. Click on your user name on the blue menu bar on the right side when you are logged into the DIS
  2. Under the "Your Account" menu bar choice, click "Privacy"
  3. On the section "Allow users to ... " are several choices
  4. On the choice "Start conversations with you:" make sure you have chosen the "Members Only" option.
  5. Save these changes.

@Boomer1 / Krista, I need YOU to do this (and others if you are in doubt as to your own status, check it). And I'm not going to start doing email - going to keep everything in one place here on the DIS (trying to keep things simple). Also, I don't know if the old rules carried over to the new DIS software, but you used to need 10 posts to be able to send a PM (10 posts anywhere on the DIS not just the camping forum). If you don't know your count, click on your user name on the blue menu bar while logged in and check the number of "Messages".

As a reminder early next week we will start the Early Interest Priority registration. I have a list of DIS users who will be in that first wave.

Have a great weekend!

Bama Ed

Ed,

Any idea how many sites are left? There are 2 Disney Crazy people I work with that have campers and might be interested. I didn't mention anything to them until I knew everyone here had an opportunity to join us.

If they can go Premium, Teamubr, we'd love to have them. We are opening up the reservation process to friends and family of DIS'sers today. See the current post #1. They can request a Full if they want but no guarantees.

Bama Ed

PS - how many left is hard to say. I know many people have reservations. I know some requests today are "lying on the fax machine". And I know of a few intending to still send some in tomorrow. But we have capacity in Premium, it's Fulls that are kinda tight depending on the dates requested.

You guys are making me wish I was attending now. Looks like it will be a great group of people. Maybe I can book a tent site and rough it for a couple of days. Old school like I used to do at Talladega. My mind is racing now. Can I take a few days for a solo trip before my family Halloween trip. Maybe. Just maybe

Flametamr, you are welcomed to stay with us. We have a nice bed in the garage of our Toy Hauler. We do a have dog & cat with us. Not sure if you have allergies to 4 legged babies.
