If you were not a soccer (association football) fan before, are you now based on the USWNT or USMNT?

I'm a soccer fan every World Cup or Olympics. Otherwise, I don't pay much attention, sorry to say. I think I could become an EPL fan if I gave it a chance--maybe someday.

FYI, EPL starts on August 9th on NBC and NBCSN, NBC usually shows the 12:30 pm Saturday match. I encourage you to give it a try. It is the richest league in the world ,in both money contracts and talent. For those wanting to give soccer a try, it's a great league to watch and easy to find. ESPN+ also has great leagues available too. 😁 ⚽

I don't get the complaint. They had record ratings, and Fox Sports is
pretty happy about it.

It's pure fantasy. Some people (mostly Canadians) here on the Dis are butt hurt that the U.S. women celebrated their goals. And now they're making things up about damaging the sport and the country, funny stuff.

How much damage does Justin T do to Canada when he goes jogging in his Daisy Dukes for a photo shot? Probably significantly more than our U.S. women did.

No. But I always like when my country/team wins!

I am expecting to be flamed, but I have repeatedly been asked why I don't care for some of their actions/behaviors. This is one of the reasons why. No, it is NOT about politics, which we cannot discuss on here. You can have any feelings you want about our current climate, that is American to have that right.

But the line (for me) gets drawn at this type of action. You CANNOT drop and step not the flag for the country you are playing for. To me, it is extremely disrespectful. I can't support this.

Haven't read all the responses, but to answer the original question. Absolutely no. I find soccer incredibly boring, definitely not my thing.

Shaun White did the same thing in the Olympics. They were excited, it wasn't on purpose.

So you didn't have an issue with this team until that moment?

Do you get mad when teams bring out giant flags that cover most of the field before games sometimes? Because that's also against the flag code (carried horizontally). It's also not supposed to be used for advertising, worn as clothing, embroidered or printed on pillows/napkins/bedding/etc.

Thanks--how long does the season run? DW and I are planning a trip to London next year (probably fall) and I'd love to catch a game (match?) while we're there.

Oh, I have had issues prior to this as I stated on page 1. And I have been asked repeatedly if I feel the same for men, which I do. (In fact, there are far more male athletes I don't care for.) But I kept getting asked, and then I saw this and it once again it showed why there actions bother me. This is the stuff I don't like. Yes, they were excited. They just won back to back, I get it. But that is your countries flag. The country you were just playing for! We were taught at a very young age to not disrespect the flag. To not let it touch the ground, and to not drop it in front of you and dance. :rolleyes2 Find another player and hand it off. IDK. YMMV. I knew I was going to get backlash. And we can peacefully agree to disagree.

OK, come on. No, I do not have a problem with that. It is usually done by the military who will die for that flag. If you watch the Superbowl you know that is going to happen. I have never heard of anyone taking offense to that. (ETA, I don't have issue with any of the social norms we are comfortable with, but I have issue with dropping and dancing on the flag.)

We are going to agree to disagree on this. I am not changing my mind, and you aren't changing yours. That's fine. No hard feelings.

You say there are other reasons, but in this particular case, you are holding the entire team responsible for the action of one? Including the player that immediately picked up the flag?

Yes, we will have to agree to disagree.

I agree that player (Allie Long maybe) should not have dropped the flag. BUT, you're disparaging the entire team based on the act of one player. "Well, she represents the team." Yes, she does. But I feel if you're going to criticize an entire team for the bad action of one player, you should also at least point out the good action of another player. Once Long dropped the flag, another player (I can't tell who) rushes in to grab it off the ground.

And yes, people (athlete and non) "disrespect" the flag ALL. THE. TIME.

Kelley O'Hara

He didn't drop it intentionally to dance.

And he was flamed on social media too. He apologized.

Have they apologized for dropping the flag? Just disrespectful group. They are trying to take the place of the NFL for disgusting behavior. They may have succeeded But the soccer nuts will defend their actions and their boring sport to the end.

No I am not holding the entire team responsible. In fact, I loved the one woman for picking it up as soon as she saw it. She knew it was in poor taste! But several players on this team have done things I don't like. And sadly, it does affect how I think about the team as a whole. It is not like I wanted Netherlands to win. I didn't. Of course I want USA to win.

Honestly, I don't like other teams because of some players. And I don't think I am completely alone on having feelings like this. Example, Cincinnati Bengals. They had several dirty players, Burfict (who went to my Alma Mater) and Jones. They bothered me enough to not like the team.

I read contradictions in your posts. You aren't holding the holding the team responsible for the action(s) of one. But it affects how you view the team as a whole? That makes no sense.
