Little Mermaid casting

Oh yeah. And the 2014 remake of "Annie" did really well at the box office too. Another gem.
The OP's question was about thoughts of the casting, not how well the movie might do commercially. I didn't see the Annie remake, because the story line and music didn't appeal to me much in the original. I also didn't watch the Cinderella remake *because* it was multi-racial; it just happened to be as aspect of the film that appealed to me upon viewing. I am hoping that the Little Mermaid remake is similar - they cast the best actor for each role, regardless of their race. Ultimately, that's what I appreciate in the context of a fantasy film. So much else is unrealistic - why do we have to be "realistic" with this one aspect?

I will jump back in to add I'm not so much a fan of Melissa McCarthy. But whatever. Its not like Hollywood can be expected to wrap its head around multiple plus size women all having careers at the same time.
I tend to agree with you here. I'm a fan of Melissa McCarthy. I think she's hilarious and an amazing actress, and if they want to give Ursula more of a sense of humor, then she would be amazing, but it might take away from the really slimy/ villainous character that Ursula is known for.

Already said this in another thread: I dont know why this movie in particular is such a huge focus when Disney is constantly reimagining characters. Has everyone forgotten that they made Rumplestiltskin as the Beast and Captain Hook as the crocodile in Once Upon A Time? Mulan also had a thing for Aurora. It's fiction, and they can write the stories however they please.

OUAT was Disney? I loved that show in the beginning, but stopped watching halfway through season 4. I thought the plot lines were getting a bit ridiculous.

Yes, it was ABC. They had Frozen and all kinds of disney stuff in it, including hidden Mickeys.

Here is a hidden Mickey I caught when I was watching on DVR years ago. They were digging in a desk drawer for something. IMG_20150416_181651:nopm:.jpg

What a friend of mine who is albino had to share on this topic with a few edits from me and it makes sense to me

If there actually were half-humanoid half-fish creatures "under the sea" the humanoid part of them would most certainly have evolved with ever decreasing amounts of melanin due to their complete lack of exposure to the sun...so in all reality, Ariel should be albino-esque. Pretty sure science would concur.

Personally I am interested in the remake and will decide if I like it when it comes out.

With Alan Menken and Lin Manuel writing the music (which I think is what really makes the movie) I have no issue with the casting. Halle Bailey can sing. Ariel is a mermaid. Mermaids do not exist so getting upset over an imaginary thing that was in an animated movie seems a bit ridiculous.

Im iffy about McCarthy as Ursula because her brand of humor is not right for that character

I'm relieved that she can sing. Love Emma Watson but her singing in B&B was really cringeworthy, they should have dubbed her like they used to do for famous actors instead of compromising by having her speak-sing. I'm quite attached to the red-headed Ariel as it was my favorite Disney movie as a kid. If they stick a red wig on Halle I'll be happy. I wish they had cast a drag performer as Ursula since her original inspiration was Divine.

The Ursula thing is what bothers me. Especially when they are changing the race of Ariel why cant you actually cast a drag performer for Ursula?

Honestly, I would have loved Titus from The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt for Ursula haha

Tituss Burgess would have been perfect! OMGosh :) I’m not loving Mcarthy for the roll even though I enjoy her...

I love the argument against her casting from so called "purists". If you're really a purist, then I guess the only satisfying casting would involve a half fish humanoid...
She's got a killer voice, and sometimes the original isn't the only. Is this just about hair color? I don't get it.

It will be another perspective of the fairy tale. They are all like that... that is the formula of a fairy tale. Should be fun though

She has a lovely voice. To me, that’s the most important thing for an actress to play Ariel. I think that she’s going to do great.

She can wear a red wig. Every actress who plays her in the musical or at the parks wears one because Ariel’s fire truck red hair does not exist in humans.

i see one tiny problem disney might have with this in the parks Ariel is white in the live action movie she won't be white, good luck to parents and cast members try to explain that to a kid and also the kid might ask the lady from the fog movie which was disney's first movie about that race and last hand draw movie. So disney was like i know we do have a black princes but now whatever we can make a princes any color we want, yay money.

time to explain to the kids that fairy tales exist simultaneously in many cultures - most of them have a Cinderella story or a Snow White/Sleeping Beauty story element in their cultures!
Therefore they don't always all look the same. Disney's version is only one version. I think that Snow White is one of the few Princesses whose features are actually defined in the story (and Disney ignored her BFF Rose Red, btw) Besides by Disney logic, Ariel is a Character... those are Friends you are M&Ging with. ;)
