Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge Opening Day *August 29* Planning Thread

I've been looking on Amazon, and there are some smaller chairs that fold up and would be easy enough to carry or put in a locker. But I have to say, I like the pool float idea. I keep getting a pop up on my Facebook for a small sun tent that is tiny before you kind of fling it out to open up. Not sure if it would keep any bugs or rain out though...

I'm staying at the Swan Aug 27-31, and want to be there opening day. Sis is coming along, but I'm betting she won't want to camp out. I could bring a pool float to lounge in, and have a movie or two on my kindle and be good to go.

Do you think planning on 3 am is too late?
WDW will not allow you to bring any kind of chair into the park, so unless it folds small enough to place in a trash can outside, you'd have to take it back to a car. If WDW winds up bringing us into the park, say to hold in Fantasmic's arena, really early, I doubt they'll allow anything like pool floats, either. The pool float was my idea for waiting overnight on the sidewalk outside the gates, but that may not be the case. As for a 3am arrival, nobody knows yet because WDW has yet to offer any info on when they'll begin allowing people to wait. If they say midnight, yeah - 3am would be way too late.

In this scenario are you saying a 3 am arrival will not get you into GE at all? Or you do you just mean you will not be at the front of the line.

I realize no one really knows what will happen , just trying to interpret what you are saying here.

Here's a SW GE Opening Day question that I realize no one can answer definitively yet. I'm just looking for educated guesses based on what people know about how things are currently being run at DL, and/or what they think may happen at WDW.

I'm planning a solo trip for the August 29 Opening Day. Assuming there is an overnight queue, I'll be there hoping to be part of the first group(s) into the land. But because I also want to see SW GE at night, and I definitely don't plan on staying in the land from 6am-10pm, I'm wondering what options might be open to leave for a midday break and then return to GE early evening.

I think my best bet would be to snag an evening reservation at Oga's before it reaches capacity for the day. If I understand the current DL system correctly, this would permit you to bypass the queue for the land. Alternatively, if there is a virtual queue or similar system in place, I may just try to get a boarding pass for an evening time slot. But does the DL virtual queue allow you to choose your own return time? Or does it automatically assign you to the next available 'boarding group'?

Anyone else thinking along these lines? What are your current* plans for the day?

*subject to totally changing when Disney finally gets around to announcing how Opening Day will work!!

the DL VQ which operated for half of day, allowed you to join the next boarding group, you could not choose times. I think Oga's reservation is a good idea, if we follow DL system

Honestly, I'm saying I have NO idea what to expect, lol! But IF they allow overnight camping - say, starting at 10pm the night before - and IF enough people show up between 10p and 3a to fill GE, then yeah - 3am will be too late to get right in. It's just a lot of "ifs" at this point. My plan is to be there, ready to roll, by whatever time they allow waiting to begin.

This is my hope, too. Be among the first to enter in the wee hours of the morning (which will still be dark, BTW - so basically night, lol!), score a same-day ADR for Oga's in the evening, and crash at my hotel during the day. Fingers crossed!

Hmm, I didn't consider that it will still be dark(ish) first thing. If I can see the night-time version of GE in the morning, all of a sudden the After Hours at Magic Kingdom that same night is starting to look appealing!

You should be good if you’re in there early. Sunrise isn’t until 7:02 on opening day.

I literally just now joined this board to ask a question in this thread. I understand it is all guess work, but what do you think the crowds will be like for Galaxy's Edge Orlando the week after opening day, perhaps Tuesday, September 3, and making use of Extra Extra Magic Hours in the morning? I assume it will still be busy, but perhaps in the morning only normal theme park busy as opposed to completely insane? Are there any reports on what attendance was like at Disneyland the week after opening?

No one is going to be able this for you with an exact answer. Truthfully, no-one knows what it’s going to be like. WDW & DL have handled this differently. DL offered reservations only for a 3 week period(no reservation, no entry) and then the majority of their attendees were blocked out with their annual passes so truly, what even is “DL’s 1 week after opening”? Is it June 7th or July 1st? It could be either and neither.

Without knowing the in’s and out’s of your trip- I can’t say for sure what the best day to do Galaxy’s Edge is. If you don’t have park hoppers but you have a slinky dog fastpass on a certain day - I’d aim for that day. If you’re going to the Halloween party - I wouldn’t aim for the day after that (it can be a late night). If you’re going to Jellyrolls one night - I would avoid the next day also. All other things equal- a Tuesday isn’t that much different to a Wednesday in WDW. It’s a vacationers Park; and if we’re referring to Extra Extra Magic Hours - the great majority of people lining up are on vacation if they’re onsite. So a day of the week won’t effect crowds that much, so definitely stick to what works for YOUR schedule. I’d be aiming for a day you can realistically be there for 5am. Do I think you’ll be the first one in line? No. But you’ll be in a good enough position.

Tuesday Sep 3rd is going to be milder than August 29th so if you’re there for a week & leave on the 4th and that’s your best option - go for it. I would be closely following boards like these, social media, Disney FB groups. If you hear people talking about it in front of you in a line- ask them for feedback. Mainly because the more days of this EEMH that goes by - the better the strategies will be and you can learn from others. This amount of extra magic hours is so new for everyone so no-one knows how popular they will be. The impressions most people have - they will be great to see Galaxy’s Edge. But waking up at 4am on vacation is not for everyone, and it certainly isn’t for every day of your trip. So it’s a solid strategy to see Galaxy’s Edge. For me, I’m planning on doing it once this way - I’d like to try once later in the day also so I can get more Oga’s cantina offerings. So you might want to consider that as well.

They are doing ADR's for Oga's???

Thought this might be interesting to add here with regards to getting to DHS for the 6am opening - if Skyliner CMs are only starting their shift at 5am, I would think you could take the Skyliner to get there for 6am, but if you want to be one of the first people might want to go Uber or something

But if shifts are ENDING at 3, 4, or 5 AM, you'd be able to get to DHS then. Unless you're expecting them to not allow people to travel from CBR/POP/AoA during that time.

Can anyone take a guess as to when they will announce the rules for camping out, etc. on opening day/the evening before? Are rules like this usually announced?

So as the days tick off, do we think the CM previews will have an influence on whether they do a reservation system for WDW opening?

I feel like we are very close to being past the point of them being able to employ a whole campaign for that.

As they said from the very beginning, the will not do a reservation system here. They could change their minds but at this point I am almost 100% they won't

Yea I know that was their statement, but that was quite some time ago—I think many people around these parts were waiting to see if they would adjust their plan based on how things went in DL. But like you said at this point it definitely seems like that is not happening. So....it's bedlam then.
