Active shooting situation in El Paso mall

A four-month old baby was shot. Let that sink in before anyone starts getting petty on here. These discussions are important. They need to happen here and everywhere else until something changes. We can't go on like this as a country.

20 first graders were killed in school at Sandy Hook and nothing changed.

"Military type weapon"? What exactly does that mean? You need to be specific about what exactly makes a gun an "assault rifle". What are the distinguishing characteristics of an assault rifle as opposed to a non-assault rifle?

Are you being serious? Or are you trolling?

Who cares what the "technical" definition is. NO CIVILIAN EVER needs a weapon capable of shooting 50 people in a matter of minutes. No one.

And yes, I am aware of what the difference is between an AR-15 and a military M16 rifle. I'm married to a Marine who has actually used said M16 in wartime, and he is fervently anti gun when it comes to personal ownership.

The facts are that this young man was described as troubled and a loner. He used a AK-47 STYLE gun. That is a description. Other articles only describe it as a long gun. But honestly it doesn’t matter. HE shouldn’t have had a gun. That is not to say no one should have a gun.

This kid was obviously mentally ill and latched on to something and for what ever reason he must have focused on or obsessed over immigrants. Very sad that anyone could be so hate filled.

What he wrote, is in no way acceptable. Hate crimes are in no way acceptable. Hate speech is in no way acceptable. Not sure why anyone thinks it is. No one is making racism ok.

Many prayers for the victims and victims’ families. And to El Paso. And the great state of Texas.

Really? That’s what you want to focus on? The name of the gun? What the heck does it matter what it’s called. It was a gun capable of killing 20 and wounding 26. That’s not a weapon that any civilian should have access to.

The created purpose of your example is not to kill people, but rather something else. The created purpose of the standard mass shooting weapon is to kill people, quickly and efficiently.

Here is one story of an armed hero. His being armed didn’t really have a lot to do with it. But he is most certainly a hero.

It appears he did. Seems to be standard weapon of choice for mass shootings.

Not that I disagree with you, but I remember way back to the Luby's Massacre where the weapons were handguns, including a Glock 17. A lot was made about the capacity (17+1) of the Glock. I even recall an article where a reporter (who didn't particularly like guns) went into a WalMart and was out of there in less than an hour with one. Still - it takes someone more skilled to use a handgun, while someone with a long gun is far more accurate and at least with an AK47 style firearm will pack far more of a punch per round. There are of course some rifles that use ammo more typical for handguns.

My condolences to all of those hurt. I was born in El Paso, and have a lot of family there. Everyone in my family, to my knowledge, is safe, but they are in shock. They have always been proud to say that El Paso is one of the safest cities in the US. Very sad day for us, and it's horrible that anyone has to go through this.

I read he drove 10 hours. He clearly had a plan, which I assume is mentioned in his manifesto.
Texas still has the death penalty right? Mentally ill and/or racist I hope he gets that as his sentence.

The stories said so earlier but now they are just saying that it was a military style gun. Of course some think that all of them are AK-47's. There are pictures of the guy entering a store carrying the gun. I don't know enough about guns to identify it.

I'm from Newtown, CT and my children were in the schools when our tragedy struck. No words can ever express what is felt when something like this happens. Prayers to the victims and their families in El Paso. Nothing will ever be the same again. With that being said I never had an interest to carry but since our event my wife and my two oldest children as well as myself now all have our permits and carry. The world is a scary place and unfortunately these tragedies are all to common.

The shooter published a manifesto online prior to the massacre that talked about immigrants taking over Texas and his desire to kill them. What has this country become? Yes, mental health is at play here, but hatred and racism are the cause as well.

I know many people want to blame the gun first but if guns were banned, do you really think these sick, evil people who want to kill people would just not kill because they couldn't get their hands on a gun??? I highly doubt it. There are millions of guns in the country and someone who wants to do harm, will get a gun illegally (like drug addicts get drugs illegally) OR they will kill people in other ways, not involving guns. Sadly, these type of people will find a way to kill, gun or not.
