i know that at orlando airport, alamo often mixes different car sizes together in the same aisle..
so you feel like an idiot, if you booked the more expensive size in the aisle..

for example, compact and economy are often together, so you would rather have booked the cheaper of the two, since if they're in the same aisle, you can pick either one..

i have reservations for both a full size car and an intermediate SUV..
i'm wondering if when i get to the airport, i'll find those two together and then i'll feel the idiot for paying $100 more...

anyone been to orlando recently and noticed?

i fly out monday night..
.

We always paid for the smallest size which as you say end up with a choice of larger cars. I would pay for the smaller one & then when you get there if there isn't one the size you want you can always upgrade.

Hi Beth, I have never known Full size cars and SUV's mixed.
I couldn't find any reasonable prices with Alamo this year (Sept 14th for 23 nights) I booked with Dollar originally but this week saw Hertz had an offer on, Cancelled Dollar and booked Hertz, much prefer their Gold service, no desk to deal with and free insurance for spouse, worked out at £21/nt for full size car.

I ended up throwing in the towel and did online check-in and skip the counter for the intermediate SUV..
if it ends up that they're mixed in with cheaper cars, i'll be annoyed, but i just wanted the peace of mind to have a car waiting when i get there (and be able to skip the counter at the zoo that is orlando airport)...

as for hertz, i've never booked anything but alamo in florida.
i'll give one last look at hertz and see what i come up with..
i actually have a discount code from the airline for hertz....i'll check it out to see if the price is much better..

thanks!

We also have never booked anything but Alamo in Orlando and have always been pleased with the service we get. I am a bit reluctant in trying any other company just in case it all goes pear shaped :confused3

We have done over 55 rentals in the US (at least 45 in Florida) using 4 companies, I would rate them Hertz top, Dollar/Alamo joint 2nd and Budget last. Downside to Hertz is they are often expensive unless you find a code, one I just used dropped rental from over £600 to £489 but it expired Wednesday, the airline codes are usually only 10%, I usually find I need to find one for 20-25% to be worthwhile.

We use Alamo often and we have been pleased. We have a profile on file as we are Alamo Insiders. My reservation however says go to ticket counter. Can we bypass ticket counter and go straight to car area? If so, what would we have to do in advance? Thanks!

I booked using alamo UK (using the brit guide discount).
To check in online, i went to the alamo UK website, entered my confirmation number and name, then had to fill out some information..
at the end of that, it offered "skip the counter"..
so i clicked on "skip the counter", where i had to enter some more information as well as a credit card number

at the end, it gave me a page to print out to bring with me..
and i get to skip the counter..
i go straight to where the cars are, pick out my car, drive it to the exit where i hand in that page from skip the counter, as well as my drivers license etc

i did it last time and it worked like a charm..

the counter in orlando can be deadly especially if you get there at the same time as a virgin plane arriving..

i've been in hour long lines there...

so if you can skip the counter, it can save tons of time!!!

We always fly with Virgin and book through Virgin for our car hire, Virgin have their own counter so we have never queued at the Alamo counter.

The queues vary so much. I've arrived and been in a ridiculous Dollar queue, and there was no Alamo queue, and I've also had no Dollar Queue and seen a huuuuge Alamo queue. Both Alamo Skip The Counter and Dollar Express are well worth it!

last time was the first time we used skip the counter and i was so thankful as the alamo line that day was as far as the eye could see!!
however i agree, i've gotten there when there was no one in line...

Just to let you know Virgin mark up Alamo car rentals by between 20 and 30 % from going direct.

Your get the same service direct as any issues are not dealt with by Virgin they are dealt with Alamo.

Last year as we have booked with them so many times they gave us a free upgrade to a Maseati Levante which i thought was a nice touch.

Love the idea of being able to turn up and see what they have to choose from.

If you are an AA member, you can get 15% discount with Alamo booking through them.

I just checked both Virgin and Alamo UK and they are both the same price :confused3

I only insure my car through the AA so can't get any discount but on their website it states you only get 5% with Alamo if you belong to the AA breakdown service.
