Relying on Uber?

My brother and his wife are headed for a quick trip in 2 weeks. They are staying off property. I'm sure the hotel offers shuttles but we've had bad experiences with that. They are thinking about renting a car. I was wondering if they could get by with relying on Uber. They are staying about 10 minutes from the TTC. They arrive in the evening, will spend 2 full days in parks and then leave early morning to fly home.

You just have to do the math.

Uber is very reliable and readily available in the WDW area, but you have to consider several things:
  • What would be the cost of the rental car?
  • Does their resort charge a parking fee?
  • Add the Disney theme park parking fee each day.
  • How many Uber trips would they make to and from the parks (both directions -- include return trips)
  • What is the size of their party? If it's just the two of them, they can use X or Comfort. More than that they would have to consider XL.
  • Where are they going to eat and shop? If they're going to do that offsite, they may need additional Uber trips.
You can get reasonably accurate fare estimates from RideGuru, or if you have the app, just set the appropriate pickup and dropoff points to get more accurate fares. Remember that actual fares will vary with demand.

I agree with @JimMIA, its all about the math... and the headache of dealing with a rental. Using the Ride.guru website you can estimate your trips, even playing around with the surge pricing to give you some idea of what to expect. Surge pricing tends to hit when the parks close. If you can skip over to a resort and grab a drink and wait a bit you'll be better off, or use the WDW transportation to get closer to the hotel area you're staying at.

Personally, I would use Uber even if it weren't the cheaper option. It's just more convenient and will help to maximize their time on a short trip.

If they are going to MK, have Uber drop them off at Contemporary and walk from there.
Bingo
Couldn't agree more.

Also agree!
We just came back from a quick trip (thanks Dorian :headache:) and used Lyft for several rides. There was a gas issue in Orlando (actually, all up and down Florida due to people preparing/freaking out about the hurricane) so we parked our car at our offsite resort with a full tank and used Lyft to get around to save our gas for a quick exit, if we needed to. For us, along with the convenience of where you're dropped off, the prices were good and in a lot of cases less than the $25 parking fee. When you sign up for Uber or Lyft they will sometimes send you promos for a percentage off rides. We used Lyft because I had one such promo that offered 25% off my next 10 rides. I think Uber had a 5% off rides in the app when I was looking.

Here's a quick breakdown of what we paid. We did tip cash, except for one ride where we didn't have any cash with us and we just tipped on the app. The prices below are not including the tip, which we tip anywhere around $3
1. 11.23 miles, 20m 9s, $12.97 - $3.24 discount = $9.73, plus cash tip
2. 9.69 miles, 17m 6s, $13.98 - $3.49 discount = $10.49 plus cash tip
3. 6.56 miles, 11m 40sm $10.20 - $2.55 discount = $7.65 plus cash tip
4. 5.68 miles, 9m 7s, $10.66 - $2.66 discount = $8.00 plus tip
5. 6.53 miles, 13m 5s, $11.28 - $2.82 discount = $8.46 plus cash tip
6. 5.06 miles, 15m 29s, $10.69 - $2.67 discount = $8.02 plus cash tip

I had all these receipts out because I'm planning for next month and trying to factor in all costs. :thumbsup2

With our August trip, the price of a rental car was crazy so we decided to go the Uber route and spent alot less than the rental would have cost us over a 5 day period.
The only ride that we were not thrilled with was from Disney to the airport. The trunk was not very clean and it was the only place to put our luggage.

We just got back and used Uber several times when we were running late and or did not want to stand in the rain or long lines post park closures and had NO issues, ave cost was around $10 or so most expensive was on Sunday night AFTER the MK closed and we got off the Pirates cruse from the CR and the bus depot was out of control, it was $30 due to the "traffic and construction" going on, according to Uber.......But loved the ability to use them!
