Debt Dumpers - 2019

Wow that's an incredible amount in a year particularly on cars! Congrats on paying off cars and the other savings! You must have great incomes! An auto fund separate from repairs makes sense, I had one until repairs were eating into it because my repairs were costly, rendering no point in the other fund as I shifted it over to cover costs, ugh! Then ended up getting a new car way sooner than I intended, and short on car shopping time to know what car to even get. The trick is if going to have a car replacement fund, to get ahead with it before cars get too old and then repairs become more likely to happen.
Thanks! Only great for this year lol, this is a weird year. I am still in my job with all of the crazy OT, looking to get out because they have added even more running days to our schedule even though we have already been doing every other weekend (so 12 days on, 2 off). But DH is the big breadwinner for the year - it's just that he's landed a big customer and makes commission; he was expecting the jobs to start last fall and thus some pay out in 2018 but they didn't start until Jan/Feb of this year, and they just keep adding locations around the country, or 2nd buildings, etc. So his 2019 income just looks crazy compared to the last few years. So with that going on, we made it a big goal to shuffle the majority into savings, car payoff, maxing 401ks this year... It feels very unreal to look at Ynab and the total cash line :faint:

I kind of got caught up like you with my vehicle, wasn't expecting it and short on shopping time. So now that we have two new :crazy2: (never again!) paid off vehicles I want to establish a good habit of saving for bigger repairs and a replacement eventually.

You have made some really amazing progress this year! And we missed you here, so please check in more often. :D
Aw thanks! Yes, I've been really bad about keeping up with anything but the credit card thread on the Dis. I've been reading here but not posting. I feel like things have been crazy between work and family things like my BIL. I know I just barely touched on BIL back in July here so I'll probably post a little more.

Since I never really touched on BIL here, here's what I posted on another thread, this was after our cruise trip in June:

Alrighty, here is our excitement for the trip:

I dont think I mentioned here that BIL, the one in Cali, went to the ER twice the weekend before the trip. So 6/14 to 6/16. Fri night he said numbness tingling and burning in his hands and feet, MIL told him he needed to go in right away so he did after a bit. He had gone in to urgent care a day or two before and been diagnosed with pneumonia. BIL had shingles last winter and has had a cough since then, but does not take care of himself so didnt go in. Then his wife had gallbladder issues (a whole other story) so he didnt go until that was taken care of.

So this ER trip they sent him home the next morning, not sure what was wrong but said he didnt have pneumonia. Then he went back on Sunday afternoon because he was having trouble breathing. They said his throat was swollen and thought it was a reaction to the medicine.

Meanwhile I am ready to fly ILs out to Ontario which is the closest airport for 12k United points, told them not to worry but they waited. After Sunday they switched meds or took him off or something and he was supposed to go back on 6/28 for a follow up and do allergen tests. BIL is all I'm fine now, still going to try and meet you guys for Kennedy.

Now, I could write a book on his wife. I tell DH I dont have to claim her as SIL because his brother married her :P But sticking to my personal observations and impressions. She is a high maintenance, attention seeking type. There is always some drama going on. Anytime BIL leaves or is about to there is a crisis. I also feel like she is the type who feels she needs to compete with and replace BILs family in his life, if that makes sense. I believe you can't necessarily let family get in between your relationship with your spouse and make all your decisions and cause issues, you need to put your spouse and kids first, but they dont need to be cut out unless there are certain situations. My dad is an Alien Swirling Saucers-hole but DH did not try to get rid of him, he left that to me and I had to figure out everything for myself which was good. My ILs are not crazy overbearing people. She had to have her gallbladder removed recently. Outpatient procedure. She kept putting it off with the excuse of needing to check out the surgeons, but also going to the ER every 3 days for the pain. Bad enough the ER dr was finally like, we are doing this tonight and being done with it. Then he got called away and said we will do it in the morning and you are staying overnight because we dont trust you not to go home and eat and sabotage this. So theres a teeny look at SIL.

So we bought insurance for this trip, right? Mainly thinking of grandparents but BIL is all no, I'm doing better, it's fine. Ok, so we give everyone including SIL the ship phone number and two email addresses. DCL gives you 50mb of free data, so the plan was to try and check email a couple times a day. Everyone was supposed to email BOTH emails because we didn't know which would get checked first. One was mine and one was FILs, chosen because we get the least emails to save data. But then MIL got worried about accidentally turning the phone on when we were leaving on the cruise Sunday so we didnt set hers up to check FILs email. It's fine, we'll just check mine!

Soooo can anyone see where this is going?

BIL goes back into the hospital on Monday morning. He sends an email like hey I'm going back to the hospital. To ONLY FILs email. Dropped ball number one. So we dont know. Other BIL back in CO doesnt know either, just his brother is no longer answering so he texts SIL who says hes back in the hospital but fine. Dropped ball numbers two to... five? BIL doesn't tell BIL, SIL doesnt tell him or us, BIL in CO sends an email about it... to ONLY FILs email. Arghhhh.

So then we figure out we can call and text over wifi! This never crossed my mind or came up online anywhere. Seriously next time I will just budget a data package and then tell people we can respond to texts but only occasionally. So DH sends BIL a text like how are you feeling and he responds, when can I call. Ok, this is not a good sign. So we try wifi calling and get ahold of him on speaker with everyone there.

One more small interjection, BIL mentioned on the call that he was going to call the ship that night if he hadn't heard from us... which is about $8 a minute plus fees. He sent ONE email that he was going, sent nothing else, SIL sent nothing else, before he was going to place a $300 phone call. Seriously next time data package, no one is getting the ship number.

On to seriousness. BIL seems to have contracted one of those one in a million chance auto immune diseases where after clearing a normal infection his antibodies for whatever reason started to attack his nerves. They are doing treatments but wont know what kind of recovery he could be looking at until they can do rehab or more tests. His regular dr is back today so they are supposed to find out more today. When we spoke to him on the ship he said he was too weak to get up himself. He couldn't eat solids because that was what was wrong with his throat, more paralysis/no control not swelling. It was hard for him to talk.

GUYS THIS WAS AT THE TIME SIL WAS TELLING OTHER BIL HE WAS FINE THEY WERE JUST RUNNING TESTS. WHATTTTTTT THIS IS NOT FINE IN MY BOOKKKKKKK

So BIL probably couldn't reach out more, but how could she not? What in the actual bad word????

And they knew that weekend he was going back in. We could have cancelled everything at that point and sent ILs out there. Had we found out Monday we could have jumped ship in Nassau on Tuesday and gotten half the money back and everything else. I dont want to sound like all that matters is the money it's more that everyone would have been happier being there sooner. And frustrated that BIL was not honest with us about what was going on because he didnt want to ruin the trip.... Instead everyone stressed and fretted and didnt really enjoy the last 1.5 days of the cruise. Other BIL booked flights out there and hotel for ILs and and flight home for aunt on Fri. So now on my to do list for the day is to reach out to insurance because I think the policy should cover those flights.

So ILs went out after our trip and spent an arm and a leg on a hotel room out there (not only would they not stay with SIL anyways because they are upset with her, but it is a 1 bedroom apartment and the kicker, it wasn't even mentioned or offered, SIL/her parents told ILs they could recommend hotels 😠 plus SIL couldn't drive herself most of the time ILs were there even because she was 'in so much pain from gallbladder surgery' so I guess I don't understand why she needed to be all alone when someone had to come by and help her multiple times a day :confused3)

So now, BIL has been doing okay, a little progress, he is trying to teach two classes a day with an assistant at his job... he's definitely been overdoing it, and sometimes he slips up on the phone and tells us he did something he is not supposed to do... because SIL is USELESS.

Then yesterday, BIL was told by his doctor that they think his immune system is still attacking itself, the original treatment just slowed it but didn't stop it, and that's why his progress is so slow for recovery. So they want to try a new treatment. And this morning we found out BIL has been at the ER all night with SILs family because her father had a major heart attack. Le sigh. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for her father and family, especially as he seems like the only halfway decent family member, but SIL milks everything for all she can regardless of the welfare of others. So our concern is that she will want/expect to be babied 1000% with no concern that BIL is not supposed to be put through stress like that as it could cause a relapse for him. And then we aren't sure when his new treatment will start (and it has side effects! gasp! per MIL because she is a google Dr and everyone takes her word as law for that because she had some medical-y courses in her schooling 20ish years ago, plus DH's family tends more pessimistic anyways). And we leave for MCO tonight for 5 days at Universal, and MIL and DHs aunt are supposed to fly down Friday to join us, and now it's all up in the air for them, and non refundable.

Hopefully I don't sound like I'm being too harsh ragging on SIL, but it's just soooooo frustrating. She won't lift a finger to do anything around their place, even now, ie take the trash out - something BIL was told by doctors not to do, but he has slipped up and told us that he is still doing it all the time. She's vegetarian but BIL is not, and she will not buy anything BIL will eat, he must go along to the store to get anything. How about this one - they have a diabetic cat that gets special canned food every day and they use paper plates for that :confused3 their choice, I'm too cheap to do that lol I'd be rinsing a bowl if I cared so much. But she will not pick the plates up and throw them away - she lines them up across the kitchen floor, one next to the other. When BIL got out of the hospital and moved to a rehab center, she had a relapse from her gallbladder pain! She had to go back to the ER! And per BILs words, was told she was overreacting/being a baby as this was a normal digestive pain as her system adjusts to not having a gallbladder, just as she had been told to expect... but it pretty much cost BIL a day of rehab because he was too worried about her to focus on his treatment. It's just this kind of stuff ALL THE TIME.

Hi everyone! I've been a long time lurker and have posted once or twice. I know that a couple people around here are working towards Public Service Loan Forgiveness. The news is super discouraging, reporting that 99% of people who apply are denied.

I wanted to share that I was approved for almost $45,000 in forgiveness last week! Not only that, the Department of Education decided that I'd made a few more than the 120 payments and refunded me over $1300 yesterday!

So now it's time to move onto paying down the remaining private loans I have, my husband's student loans (although his work qualifies for PSLF as well), and making the last few payments on our car loan. It feels so good!

Howdy @howlongtildisney ! Welcome to the ride. Please remain seated. :rotfl2: Hopefully, you can find some good tips here! The encouragement alone is what helped me make my strides.

And hey peeps, guess what?! Since paying off CC's and getting ducks in rows, DH's credit score just went up to 800! He has never been over 720. I haven't checked mine, but I've never been lower than 750. We looked at refinancing the house since the interest rates have dropped, but the fees would negate it. And so, as of next month, we only have three years left on our mortgage!

Youngest spawn gets the first round of braces on the first week of October. Holy guacamole - $5100!!! My insurance will cover $1200. I'm just excited to get it started. Older child is looking at transferring out of state for a BA in criminal justice. We reiterated our offer to help but to not go into debt. And because I'm a mean mom, there are conditions. A lot of people have given me grief over not handing out money or taking on loans for college, but I personally have two friends paying tens of thousands in loans for their kids (one had a son that failed a class a semester and left with no degree, the other has a daughter with a BA in a field she doesn't work in). And the oldest has watched us dig out of debt. I wanted to be honest and show the drudgery of it. Oldest is keen on not being in our situation and sees the rewards of CC rewards and living in your means. Hoping and praying that sticks...

I believe we will be facing some medical bills coming up. DH almost lost his foot in a car accident years ago and the bone graft has developed a spur. He'll be headed to the specialist (nearly 4 hours away) for a consult soon. But it's easier to look at knowing that we can pay it.

@imbatman Yay for the increase in credit score!

I know what you mean about not taking on loans for kids' college. We will help as much as we can, but after working diligently to pay off our mortgage we aren't in any hurry to sign up for loans.

no grief here over it-i think it's the wise way to go. sure, it's great if someone has the means in place to pay out of pocket to help their kid with college but i think far too many people are short sighted in their desire to help/fully fund their kid's educations. i look at how little many have in place for retirement yet they are either short changing it or going into debt that will reduce/eliminate their ability to save. yeah it's great for a kid to graduate with no college debt but they have more time to pay it off/save for retirement vs a parent, and i speak from experience in saying that no one wants to be in the position of being middle aged w/young kids to support worried about how you are going to meet your own/their needs and the additional stress of a parent or in-law who didn't plan for their own. it's a terrible situation to put your kid into-and not one we've ever wanted our kids subjected to.

we told ours we would help as much as we could-and allot of that w/ #1 was helping her get whatever financial aid/scholarships/work study/on campus jobs as possible. loans were on her with the advice that she only take 'free money' (subsidized so no interest accruing over her time of attendance). working well for her-graduated with about $25K in loans but after we gifted 50% payoff (after we saw the intent she's putting into payoff) she's on track, with not much more than a minimum wage job/entirely self supporting, to have the entire amount paid off in 6/20 (so 18 months from the first payment). lots of o/t, volunteering for any holiday (double time), christmas bonus, tax returns....all thrown at it. she's loving seeing her credit score rise and learning to stick to her budget (decades ahead of when dh and i finally did).

For those of you who didn't take advantage of the Disney+ offer through D23 check your e-mail! I just received an offer from "Disney Destinations" to sign up for Disney+ at the discounted rate. For a 3 year contract it is $170 ($4.72/month) and for a 2 year contract it is $120 ($5/month). The offer is good from now through October 11, 2019. I may take advantage of the 2-year plan before the offer expires.

That's awesome. Are you able to share how and why your loans were approved and 99% of others were denied? No personal details or anything, but just the process you went through and any good tips for those hoping to get it.

Oldest has a good head on her shoulders. Has used the free year of college to knock out some large credits this semester and next. Will have her AA after one year because she took courses during high school. Zero debt for the first two years of college!

community college was free back in the days when i got out of high school but i would have killed to have had the opportunity to knock out some units during high school. where we are a kid can graduate high school with 2 entirely free years of college completed (so all their general ed) yet far too few take advantage of it. i can see if it entailed having to schlep back and forth from the high school or home to a distant college but in recent years the program was tweaked to enable students to do it remotely via the internet so a kid could ride the bus to school, sit down in the computer lab to get their classes done in the morning enabling them to do electives or a job in the afternoon. wasted opportunity.

I have not heard of this and not sure that it is actually possible. They have to wait several days before testing the embryos because they need enough cell division to take 1-2 cells from the embryo without hurting it. A sperm is just a single cell and testing it would destroy it in the process.

Sure it is possible. It been possible for awhile. It's something that people who are willing to pay extra for do all the time. It's not necessarily foolproof, but the odds are pretty good.

DS16 got his driver’s license today. It will be another $200/mo to add him to the insurance and that is WITH the good student discount. Covering two adults, two teens and three cars is costing an arm and a leg. I added him to AAA too but that’s less than $80 extra for the year (although again, covering four of us now adds up). At least this is one milestone I am not sad to be done with with both kids. He needs to wait a month before he applies for parking at school and this early in the year should be no problem, but a huge help for us if he can drive himself home from sports practices. And no more nerve wracking driving hours or waiting to see if he passed the test.

Having them drive themselves will be a huge help.

Speaking as someone with 6 figs in student loan debt - all you parents who are counseling your kids against it are so smart. I wish I did some things differently, but it's just a bit too late. Ah well, nothing to do about it now but make my payments, get forgiveness, and then owe the IRS lol. As long as I can keep paying and saving I guess...

Are you doing a combo Universal and WDW trip, I notice you say 76 days and 82 days!?
76 days? as in the week following thanksgiving? we will be at universal at the same time!
We come from Washington, so to make the best use of airfare we tend to stay longer for one trip rather than many shorter ones. Learned that over the years! In the beginning, we visited many places in Orlando. But as time went by, the boys decide they were done with this place or that. Now it's just Uni and Disney. We'll land Dec 3rd, and stay onsite at Uni until the 8th. Then we switch to Disney that night, and check out on Dec. 24th. We'll get home around 9pm xmas eve. We do this every year, always try to come home on the 23rd but it's always waay more expensive. DH has to work, anyways (shift work) so xmas for us every year is whatever day he has off. This year xmas is on Dec. 27th. When the boys were growing up, they never knew what day xmas was on, so if they had to wait 2 extra days they didn't notice, lol.

i'm looking forward to the trip but it just recently hit me that when we return it's only a couple of weeks till christmas so i'm going to have to whack out as much shopping ahead of time as possible (and i told dh that the tree will be put up and decorated before we leave (plus side-i always do a good deep cleaning before it gets put up so when we get back the house will be clean so i can just kick back and enjoy the lights while running endless loads of laundry).
Oh yeah. I have to do this every year since we don't get home until xmas eve evening! I've already started... Seriously. If I didn't, I'd lose my mind with all the stuff I have to do. My adult children still give me an xmas list, due Oct.1st (DS 27 is special needs, so he does, & he expects his brother to as well, so he gives me a list with small things. DS 27 is allllll video games, though. They are both gamers - that's all they do.). House cleaned, laundry done, xmas decorations up, presents bought & wrapped, non-perishable foods bought, trip purchases ready, suitcases packed (incl. xmas decorations for our Disney room!), itinerary written & typed, everything printed, neighbors alerted, cc alerted, holiday donations bought & delivered, bills paid, extended family (children only) gifts bought, wrapped & delivered, all of our yearly appts. done, new glasses ordered if needed (I swear I need a new pair every year now, eye sight getting worse & can't wear contacts!), hair appts. right before we leave, food deliveries set up for resorts in Orlando, & the day before we leave I try to relax & give myself a mani/pedi since I don't want to run around. When we get back I'll have a couple days to get to the store for fresh food we'll need, & I have a good pwder. milk that I make for the am. Xmas eve the boys and I will have snacks & play games, then the next couple of days we'll watch xmas movies - so we'll have a rest before "xmas" day. In the middle of all that, I also go all out decorating for halloween, & I'll be doing Thanksgiving. That's why I've already begun...........

Well I think that sounds like an excellent tradition. We just haven't ventured to Universal Orlando yet. I've been to CA Universal back in, I don't remember, maybe 2004. You stay a good amount of time, too, love that!

Next Thursday will be a decision day for us on WDW in spring, Southwest extends their reservation booking schedule to 13 April. Have to see what rates look like, points for flights, schedule, etc. Next, waiting to see if Disney renews the Salute tickets for 2020 which typically has been announced end of September, and unlikely will have room discounts during the time frame I'm looking at, as they weren't available last year during the week we went.

i put the due date for the 'santa letters' as 10/1 this year as well (my special needs son is 22 and is a gamer as well so it' largely video games, gift cards to buy video games, anime books and this year-d&d stuff). usually gamestop's holiday return policy has kicked in by early november so i'll get that whacked out before we leave along with as much of the stuff i can do on amazon as possible. the house will have gotten what i call a pre departure'toxic clean' so that we can roll the luggage into the garage where i'll have multiple laundry baskets at the ready to separate loads into (i start running them the day of return if i'm functional enough-at minimum finishing by end of the next day). there is always stuff in the freezer that can be nuked but before our last few hours of flying we have a 3 hour layover so everyone can grab a bite there so no one will be starving.

i told my family i'll do all the traditional stuff for thanksgiving but i'm going to abbreviate the amount-so no leftovers that won't get consumed by sunday night when we ready to go to the airport (special needs ds's thanksgiving feast is kfc so i just won't get as large a bucket meal for him).

i'm just hopefull that we don't get massive amounts of snow while we're gone, granted, we have neighbors who will plow our driveway but the roads out near our home are not the top priority for our county so it could be slow, slippery driving with a flight that comes in late.

btw-since you do this every year, is it just sticker shock for me having not traveled back to orlando for several years or are the flights from washington to mco higher in cost this year? i was very surprised at both the price and the limited offerings of flights (and if southwest does another change on me i'm going to lose it-i have the car rental, check in and dinner out/grocery shopping planned around our arrival time).

halloween? i would love to decorate but no one would see it-12 years and not a single trick or treater (don't blame them-there's a neighborhood in the nearest town that goes all out so why schlep a quarter mile down someone's driveway when you can get a ton of candy for the identical effort in a gorgeous moose free zone).
