The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: Stress fracture of my left hip which led to a diagnosis of osteopenia which led to a diagnosis of extremely low progesterone. Progesterone aids in bone formation. I’m now taking prescription progesterone daily.

ATTQOTD:
In February, 2018 I slipped in the snow during a run after a significant snow fall. I twisted my ankle, but this was something I did often so I just took a few weeks off and started running again. Long story short, I was confronted with lots of pain, saw my doctor twice, got an incorrect diagnosis and then in July of 2018 finally saw a specialist who put me through x-rays and MRI’s. The diagnosis was a splayed paroneal tendon. This led to surgery, recovery, physical therapy, a couple set backs and so on. It has been a long road.

My biggest lessons, if something feels off, your body is talking to you. Listen to it and slow down, rest, if it continues to hurt for a few weeks/is not improving see your doctor as soon as you can. Don’t be afraid to ask to see a specialist (this made a huge difference for me). Once in recovery don’t push too hard too quickly. The length of time away from running always seems so much longer when you are beginning, but it does go by faster than you think and the injury does heal.

ATTQOTD: First attempt at a marathon during Goofy in 2015 resulted in stress fracture of the left hip. During the turn onto World drive in a big crowd, my left foot struck the heavy, black rubber base of a cone that had migrated on course. I almost fell and kept going. Once we got to the speedway I started to feel a little off. Once we got through AK, my left hip started to hurt and I stopped at an aid station. They tried stretching the hip to no avail. Started walking at mile 17 and had a miserable time in WWOS. At mile 21 I fell over and could not get back up. Tearful farewell to convince my wife to finish. I had my only visit to the RunDisney medical tent which was eye opening to say the least.

Followed doctor's orders and stayed on crutches 100% for six weeks. Repeat MRI at 6 weeks showed a worsening of the fracture in the neck of the femur. Surgery the next morning to put in 3 screws. Surgeon stated that staying off the left leg completely for 6 weeks would not allowed the proper signal for the bone to start healing.🤬

Other injuries include a few busted fingers and toes as well as lots of scrapes/lacerations/bruises/bleeding from falls on trail races in the middle of the night. PF for the first half of the year that was kept at bay by acupuncture. I was very skeptical heading into my first session but it worked wonders for me and allowed me to finish my May race.

I now follow a proper training plan and do not run everything at 110%. I finished my second 100 miler in May and am looking forward a mix of ultra and Disney runs for as long as I enjoy.

ATTQOTD:
Each injuries taught me something so I’ll share the ones that come to mind:
  • Falling while running because it is now a usual mean of transportation... But not wearing the proper footwear. Lesson learned: Be extra careful without running shoes.
  • Falling while running because the display on my phone is not showing the pace. Lesson learned: Take a few seconds to stop and fix the issue.
  • Falling while running because of a crack in the sidewalk. Lesson learned: There is this wonderful product called Tegaderm that protects the wound and allows for swimming.
  • Achiles tendon suddenly hurting like crazy three days before a race. I was lucky that my PT was available and saw me right away. I had full flexibility and, after loosening the foot (we both heard something get unstuck) he thought me how to tape it. I went for a trial run right away and finished my Half Marathon at a slower pace. I also saw a chiro and a podiatrist. Nobody knows what is going on but there is no tear or movement restriction. I still feel it at the beginning of some runs and it has been a year. Lesson learned: Keep a good relationship with PT, chiro, massage therapist, etc. See them regularly, for maintenance and so that they know who they are working with.
  • Attempting to change running form. I had to stop running for two weeks because I was just hurting myself.
  • Black toe because I kept nail polish too long and did not realize that my nails were starting to catch when running. Lesson learned: Forget nail polish (or keep for very short periods of time) and cut the nails really short. The above podiatrist said it might never recover fully but after two years, it looks almost normal. Fun fact, I am starting to have calluses in front of my toes.
  • And imagine all the problems that I have avoided by learning from other people’s experiences. Thanks!

Between running and commuting I have been running very low on podcast and audio book content. What new stuff has everyone been listening to? No politics please it just aggravates me. I'll take any suggestions from any category but I tend toward running/training, Disney, true crime, & history.

I know I ask this on the regular but I am desperate for content!

OMG! I’ve been waiting forever for this. I guess they’re trying to get it all done right before the movie comes out and “Number One Boys” (succession recap) is finished. So excited!

@FFigawi thanks for the podcast suggestion. I took a look and will have it cued up for my runs this weekend!

@lhermiston looks like the Gumby’s in East Lansing has been gone for some time. I don’t think I personally ever ate there, might have back in the dark ages when I was still a student at MSU. So no Pokey Sticks coming from East Lansing, sorry!

My Favorite Murder is one of my favs! I started at the beginning, so I’m only on episode 74 (from June 2017). If you are into true crime, The Murder Squad (which is produced by MFM) is my current favorite! Billy Jenson and Paul Holes are very entertaining and it is fascinating to see inside the mind of Paul Holes! (His new show, The DNA of Murder on Oxygen is fantastic too!)

Did a 10k run today. Was hoping to do a longer run (since Wine and Dine half is in just 2 weeks!) but I kind of just had enough by the end of the 10k. Probably because today was the 5th straight day of running and my mileage for the week is 44km (usual mileage is 25km) so might have been pushing it a bit!

Slightly worried as this means I won't have done a proper long run (besides an 18.45km 3 weeks back where I ran the first 12km but had to walk for 3km before running the rest) before the Wine and Dine half. Realistically a longer run isn't going to happen during the work week, and I leave for WDW on Saturday so a long run isn't going to happen next weekend either!

The upside is that my current 10k time is around 1:10-1:15... and I can walk at a 16 minute mile pace... so I could potentially always just run 10k then walk the rest and still make it within runDisney pacing requirements!
