If we booked a cruise to Norway/Sweden it wouldn’t be for the ship. It would be more of a convenience thing so we aren’t unpacking and moving around. We would be okay missing shows and anything like that. I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t book DCL again, at least not right away. Our plan is to save our URs for however we can make a Norway trip work.

Yep. That's why I think it would be very different from the one you booked. It's great for getting around places. I get seasick, carsick, airsick, etc. so was afraid to try it until about 12 years ago, but if I had I know we would have used ships to see more of the world when DD was little. It was such a pain to move from place to place that we tended to take much longer vacations that didn't involve much moving (although we did always do split stays at WDW LOL). Also using URs makes a ton of sense!

When you cruised in Norway did you fly to Europe first? I think moving around a lot would be a pain too. If we decide against a cruise we’ll probably try to stick to one place and just tour around that one spot. We won’t have scheduled places we have to be or anything like that. It’ll be much different from Japan lol. Dh and I love split stays at wdw. We don’t stay onsite now that we’re local which kind of stinks sometimes. If we stay the night we use URs for a DS hotel.

You can use Chase Pay at Sams Club right now. That's how we plan to maximize the CF category - Disney GCs to pay DVC dues and Aulani charges.

How do you use Chase Pay at Sam's? I have actually never used Chase Pay before, however it looks like I already have the app. I use the Scan and go 99% of the time, but I suppose with Chase Pay I have to use a register and then scan the apps QR code during payment? Does it work at the self checkouts?

We did. And we staying in a hotel for a few days both before and after the cruise, so we had more time in those 2 cities. Next summer's cruise is booked with points for the flights and the hotels, but not the cruise since it's DCL (somewhat unnecessary but we can swing it with everything else covered and we really like the smaller ships).

Have my pop tart loving friends heard about the ugly sweater pop tarts Walmart is selling? I hate going to Walmart but it may be worth a trip:) (They are sugar cookie flavored--I'm mildly intrigued.)
They have chocolate fudge and pumpkin spice Halloween pop tarts at Aldi. I almost got some today because DS has never had a pop tart...
I just need to plug Twitter here for a second LOL

I woke up to an e-mail from Chase that JetBlue changed my itinerary for December. My 10:00am flight got pushed to 11:45am. 10:00am was already later than what I originally wanted, but there was nothing else at the time I booked. Surprise, surprise, JetBlue also added a brand new completely open 9:15am flight and it is now $75 more per person than when I originally booked back in July. Called JetBlue, 24 minute hold. Hung up and went to Twitter... got a response within 5 minutes that they were looking into it and 14 minutes later I got a confirmation the itinerary was changed to the new 9:15am flight. I was shocked at how simple and easy that was! Twitter for the win!!
This is what I love Twitter for. I have used it for a number of different airlines and hotel, almost always with quick positive results.
We definitely will be doing some trips to Disney when the baby is small so maybe that will be a telling sign about going out lol. I really am thinking a cruise might be the way to go. Dh already said he wants to fly to Iowa in July to see family and the baby would be around 2 months so pretty little. That’ll be a good test trip too
I know may won’t agree, but buy the baby a seat on the plane. Much easier and safer for all. Turbulence with a baby is the worst and scariest. DSs first flight was 12 hours long. He slept 8 hours in a car seat, cried the other 4. But it was a turbulent flight so we were stuck in our seats a lot.
nd now, as an adult, I feel that loss more than ever. All my friends have siblings and they all have kids in similar age ranges and they have these amazing adult relationships and relationships with their nieces and nephews. It definitely makes me sad.
Sibling relationships aren’t always great. I know plenty of people who don’t even talk to their adult siblings. And my mom's relationship with her sibs turned ugly when my grandma was ill. My mom was the youngest of 5 and ended up full time caregiver for my grandma after she had a stroke. Only one of my mom’s siblings ever helped and he only came to relieve my mom once a week or every other week (my mom literally only left the house without my grandma on Sunday if my uncle came over. Grandma was very stubborn and refused to let anyone else take care of her.) Then when my grandma died, my mom’s oldest sister accused my mom of elder abuse and stealing grandma’s money. Needles to say, we don’t talk to anyone in the family.
My son is an only but has 3 cousins who are pretty close. I hope they can stay that way but despite my sister and I getting along ok now, my sister is not the friendly caring person to me that she presents to others. My son and his 2 same age cousins will be at the same schools starting next year for middle school and high school.

@Haley R You’ve gotten a great variety of advice. I really feel that the first child in the first year isn’t so much about teaching a child to travel but about the child showing you how they are and you figuring out how you are as a parent. We took my oldest at 3 to Europe then took a flying break due to more pregnancies, more kids, expenses, and exhaustion. We did a lot of road tripping. You will figure out what works for your family and it will be the perfect thing for all of you. I do recommend, if possible, that you teach your baby to nap with noise and bustle around.

We did the Iceland, Norway, Scotland cruise in 2016. Norway is beautiful and I think it would be a good cruise to do with a baby... minus the long flight. I've been on 24 cruises and I'm not a big show person. If it's convenient and if I feel like going I go, but I never plan my day around it.

I know the shows and entertainment are a big deal for a lot of cruisers, but it's not why we cruise. I like the convenience and relaxation it provides when traveling with kids. As kids get older it gets even better. I barely see my kids on a cruise. They are busy from the time they get up until hit the sack at 2 am. If your goal is to spend time with your kids on a vacation then cruising may not be the best choice. My kids are 15 and 17 and they still love traveling with us because most of our vacations involve some time on a ship.

There's a lot of family-oriented ships on the seas now. You are definitely not limited to DCL and their high prices.

Can someone help me figure out my luggage dilemma? We are thinking new luggage for Christmas. We have 2 types of trips planned coming up- flying that will involve checked bags and hauling carseats on the plane, and long road trips. I want 1. A nice hardsided checked bag for flying. 2. Easy to grab and carry luggage for in and out of the car while wrangling baby and toddler 3. Something that fits under the seat on the plane and is easy to carry in an airport.
I like stuff that packs a lot and I use packing cubes.

What would you bring? Specific reqs of a piece you love would be great!

This worked really well for transporting the car seat in the airport. Our seat attached with the latch attachments. Then we gate checked it. DGD just rode in her car seat so no wondering if she was going to wander off. We always used the car seat on the plane and she slept most of the trip.

Just have to share a pic here. DS and I made a cake for DHs birthday today. View attachment 445706
What a beautiful mirror glaze!!!
I was literally going to post the same thing as @PolyRob ! I only know what a mirror glaze is from watching the Great British Baking Show!

No churning (or bank bonus) news for me, but I will share that last night at my son's marching band competition, even though the band overall didn't do that well (5th out of 10 in their division), his percussion section took the percussion caption for that division so he is pretty stoked about that!

We won't talk about how the football team has been doing the last few games.

I just finished the MSR on my CIP! I need to get organized and figure out what cards have what categories this period while waiting for a new card. I didn’t even realize PayPal was in the Freedoms categories this month.

I sent myself the code to apply for the Chase business checking. It will take some getting out of my comfort zone to have to go to the branch and apply though. How bad is it getting a business checking? I use our rental property for all my business apps so thinking it shouldn’t be too bad?

Quick recap on weekend in NYC. We drove up Friday morning and arrived in the city early Friday afternoon. Due to a miscalculation, coming out of the Lincoln tunnel, I had to go north into Times Square traffic because you can't use both lanes to head south. Google maps doesn't tell you that there are all kinds of traffic cones set up as you exit the tunnel so that if you are in the right lane you go south and in the left lane you go north. This resulted in 45 minutes to essentially go around the block. There is construction and street repair going on everywhere, so driving in the city is just not great. Fortunately we only drove in with intentions to park until departure. Other than this snafu, the drive up and back was seamless and I actually enjoyed stopping at the turnpike service centers because it reminded me of the many trips from when we lived in Newport, RI, plus they pumped my gas for me.

First evening, we did pizzas and other snacks, plus some additional food from the pub at the hotel.. Daughters and friends headed out and walked for hours, including the nearby Highline. I took a nap and was out for most of the afternoon. They also brought back some Laduree macarons later on. I didn't sleep through those!

On Saturday we walked to Central Park in the morning, stopping for coffees along the way and then at a diner on 8th Avenue for breakfast and more coffee.446093

We eventually got to Columbus Circle and entered the park and headed for the playground. With two toddlers, that's pretty much a given!

Best slide ever!

About 1pm, younger DD and myself left the park and walked over to West 52nd St to the August Wilson theater. On the way we dropped into a Duane Reade for something plus stopped at a street vendor for M&M's, the pretzel ones.

We then went into the theater to see Mean Girls.
A few things reminded me of this group:

This one @PolyRob ....just Basic! I have quite a few more stage pics from before show start but I won't bore you with Fetch, Grool and whatever else.

The show was fantastic! Fast moving and funny! I enjoyed it thoroughly and I did not have high expectations. I would actually go see this one again if the option presented itself. Younger DD picked it and treated us to 4th row center orchestra seats, so we had a great view and didn't miss any of the action. She knew every line and song and all the characters and narrated a lot of information about the actors. The actor who played Regina George was my favorite - she's a 19 year old. The actor who portrayed the Janis character also did an outstanding job.

At intermission I took a bathroom break, but as is typical, there was an overwhelming line, so I went to the bar and got a Mean Girls cup with a delicious non alcoholic drink - Regina's Pop something or other. Sorry I didn't retain the name long enough to tell it to my daughter back at our seats. Then I found my own private bathroom by asking the usher if I had time to go back in line before the show restarted. This is where I encountered my New York moment where someone did something really sweet for me - led me backstage and let me use a bathroom quickly so that I could get into my seat before the show started!

After the show, we walked back towards the hotel with me reading menus at every step. But DD was not yet hungry and to be honest neither was I at 4:45ish. Eventually the crew ordered food in as everyone was exhausted from lots of walking. Poke bowls, which were just okay, nothing spectacular. I should have insisted on a 4:45 dinner on my way back.

The hotel was great. We had a premium family room that slept 8 at the Wyndham Tryp Hotel on 35th street. I thought it would be a little far to walk to the theater but it was not for me. Probably faster than driving, lol. The room was basic but in good condition and there were 2 bathrooms. It was almost suite like in that the two queen beds were in one end with a bathroom and sort of separated by the closet and storage chest. The other end had a sofa and a set of bunkbeds, plus a dining table and a wet bar with a good sized sink and a small refrig and a Keuriq. And the 2nd bathroom. No microwave but reports on trip advisor said one was brought when requested. We didn't need it. I would definitely recommend this room to those of you with parties of 5 to 7 that don't fit in regular rooms. It was downright spacious by NYC standards, but the sofa bed was small, not a spot for two adults unless they wanted to be very cosy while sleeping, but fine for 2 toddlers. Our room was 214, and it was slightly different in a better way then what is pictured on the website. It was very light with the bedroom end being a corner and 2 walls of windows plus another large window in the living room (bunks and sofa) area. I would stay here again. It was free with points but can be had in the $350 range depending on date and it's really almost better than two rooms.

You are a far braver soul than I am to drive in Manhattan. I won’t even cross the GW bridge; I do the Tappan Zee/ Mario Cuomo workaround if I have to travel out that way.

Will be doing another mother/daughter nyc trip myself this weekend. We are not sure if we will have the energy for a show Saturday night because we are doing the Hard Hat Tour of Ellis Island in the afternoon, but Mean Girls does sound great. We are booked at the Holiday Inn Express Times Square (with points, of course.)

Sounds wonderful! I. Was supposed to go to nyc with my mother this month but unfortunately she isn’t up to it. Hopefully we will go in the spring instead. We are both huge theatre fans. Mean Girls sounds great!

We just did the Chase biz checking deal a little over a week ago (spouse and I each did one at separate times). I know what you mean about getting out of your comfort zone!

It was painless for both of us, and spouse is fairly reluctant to do this stuff--even that went smoothly. I did end up sharing more about my business that on a credit card app, so be prepared to answer basic questions about how much you'll make and spend, how frequently you'll use the account, and a little more detail about what you do (as opposed to just selecting a category on a dropdown). And the banker who helped me chatted about my business quite a bit. If it was a "business" that might've been a little more unsettling for me, but still nothing to worry about if you've thought through before you sit down. And my banker wasn't making any real judgements or decisions about the account, he was just filling in the forms on his computer.

It was only $300 when I did it, but just got an SM back that they're going to change me over to the $500 since I sent them a new promo code.

They have chocolate fudge and pumpkin spice Halloween pop tarts at Aldi. I almost got some today because DS has never had a pop tart...

I really do want our baby to be able to nap with sound around. I’m not sure if that will happen or not but if we’re at Disney it would be nice for them to just fall asleep in the carrier or stroller. My nephews are told they have to sleep in their beds so they always drive home and make them go to their beds when it’s nap time instead of sleeping in a stroller
