The Running Thread - 2019

To build off of yesterday’s question, for those of you that train in cold weather what do you wear? What changes in your gear from 40* to 20*? How do you keep your phone warm?

My favorite cold weather running layer is my vest (from lululemon). I can wear a very thin layer or multiple layers underneath and it has great pockets. The colder/windier it is, the more layers I add. I have never had a problem with my phone freezing (wear it in my flipbelt), but did have issues with a cold watch 1x last winter (I took it off and stuck it next to my body to warm it back up).

Chicago 2020 - I wanted to enter the lottery, but we are building a house next year with completion around October, and that combo sounds terrible. I could enter and defer, if I get accepted, right? Hmmmm.

Weather for training (racing I will dress less):
60+ - shorts and tank
50-60 - shorts and t-shirt
40-50 - shorts and long sleeve (headband and gloves if really windy)
30-40 - capris and long sleeve, headband and gloves
30 and below - some combo of tights, long sleeve, jacket, gloves (up to two pair), headband, etc.

There isn't a Chicago Marathon 2020 thread and I am not committed enough to create one, but I know some of y'all have entered the lottery or have a guaranteed spot -- who all do we have thinking about Chicago 2020??

I'm in the lottery. I saw everyone talking about it and since my daughter goes to college there, why not?

@roxymama -- Did you get yours by running the Shamrock Shuffle 8k?

Yep, if you run 5 Shamrock Shuffles in the span of 10 years and register for the 2020 shuffle; and you are amongst the first 1000 people to apply for a shuffle legacy spot. So that's how I got in. I already received my approval and credit card hit. My 2018 Chicago time was 4:54 and change, so I'm nowhere near the "speedy qualifiers." I wonder if all the shuffle legacy spots are taken yet?

The Shuffle has been around for 40 years and is ran by the same organization as the marathon and is the "official opening" of the Chicago race season. It has the same start line and same finish line as the marathon but without all those pesky miles added on.

I once was scared to run it because 5 miles sounded scary and I knew so many "serious runners" who do it yearly. Now it's a must do.

PS Anyone who makes it into Chicago 2020 I will do my best to figure out meet up dinner, shakeout run, post race booze drinking, etc. Last time I was so nervous about my first race but this year I'll be more relaxed (hahahahaha, that's me laughing at my confidence right now...I'll be a nervous wreck again I'm sure)

Boo, I just got an email that I didn't get in through the 50 for 50 drawing at NYC. I mean, of course not, but still. Maybe I can pull out of the NYC lottery and do Chicago instead? Seems flatter and maybe funner? I know so many people who have done NYC and say it's tougher than you think. And I'm the World's Laziest Distance Runner TM so maybe Chicago is more my speed.

I feel like we are on opposite years with Chicago and Disney.

Maybe I need to just come do one of your super scenic MI races one day. Your race pics always are so great.

Every year I am like "This is my last runDisney race for *a while*"..... But Marathon Weekend and Wine & Dine are just too much fun. Can they just bring back Disneyland races now or what.

If they announced a Disneyland race again; I would sign up the second it went on line and ask forgiveness of my family later.

I got the same email. Maybe I will put in for Chicago too and see what happens... :P

Yessss :-)

QOTD- I don’t recall ever throwing anything away for a race and for me to pick something up and use it I would have to be in rough shape.

QOTD- I run and shorts and a t-shirt for anything over 50. From 30’s to 50’s I will wear shorts and a pull over sweatshirt type thing. Anything colder I am adding in compression tights, and for the real cold temps I add more layers, a hat, and gloves.

I ran the NY Marathon this weekend and while the race was great the most interesting thing that happened was pre-race. I was lucky enough to get into the United tent with my running buds. There were 4 of us and by the time we got in we wound up sharing a table with a fellow runner. During the course of the introductions it came up that he lived in Orlando and that he designed them parks. He's currently do work in China for universal. As we chatted it came out that he had done some stuff for Disney and by some stuff:
He was a producer on the revamp of Carosel of Progress and is the Voice of the teenage son in the current last scene
He was the producer of Rock and Roller Coaster and Star Tours. (his birthday is on one of the car's license plates in RNRR and on the Pipes in Star Tours)
He worked with Jim Henson on Muppet Vision 3d.
He also was one of the people that oversaw the creation of DLP.

It was like breakfast with an Imagineer before the race. The whole time I was worried about fanboying out too much and freaking him out, but I wish we had another hour before the race started to talk.

All this talk about Chicago makes me think about registering too! I've time qualified, but would have to defer all the way to 2022. Not sure if I want to take that financial hit - I read lottery wasn't as hard as NYC marathon.
