Screen reformatting

I just read on a news feed this morning that some people are extremely pissed that Disney reformatted the screen dimensions for the Simpsons to make it fit the widescreen format. It seems that in doing this it cuts out some of the picture as well as distorts the image slightly. What the heck were they (Disney) thinking? I've noticed this with other companies too that they think everything now needs to fit the widescreen format. We're not idiots! Thankfully they left the classics at least in their original format and didn't resize to fit the screen. I don't blame people one bit for being annoyed. Hopefully Disney will get the message and leave well enough alone and keep things in their original dimensions.

If it’s not done right, this move is terrible. The last time I’ve seen this done right was with X-Files. This definitely shouldn’t be done with animation.

I also heard Disney edited the Star Wars movies again along with some of their animated movies. Maybe they should rename the service Disney-.

Yes, on FXNOW you could select the 4:3 ratio or 16:9 for the older episodes. ALWAYS go with 4:3 as the zoomed in look is terrible. Hopefully they will fix it - Matt Groening was very adamant about that on the DVD's to not watch zoomed when widescreen TV's were coming out. It is the way it is meant to be seen.

I was a little curious about the aspect rations on some older content, theatrical content pre-widescreen cinema. It seems to show in a window in the center of the screen, but not even zoomed to the top and bottom. I don't mind too much, but it's an odd choice.

Responding to the typical viewer who complains without end when programming doesn't fill their big screen. There are more of "them" than there are of "us".

We're not idiots!
"Them" aren't idiots. They just like things differently from us.

In the case of the Simpsons, the resolution will likely to make both versions available.

They did that on FXNOW, so they should be able to do it here.

After reading this, I took a quick look. They didn't appear to do this to the old movies, but they did do it to some of the old TV shows, like Goof Troop and Rescue Rangers, but not Darkwing Duck.

Yes, they should be able to do it on Disney+, unless there is some arcane provision in some contract somewhere that we don't know about.

I would bet that Disney+ didn't do any editing, letter-boxing, or pillar-boxing. What we're probably seeing is a preexisting version of the content that is best-suited for the distribution servers they're using. I would guess that the only thing they may have done is make non-compliant recordings compliant (such as adding subtitles for the hearing impaired).

Ahh - no! Not to Rescue Rangers, etc. That is not cool!

That is not cool!
Not only is it not cool, it doesn't make any sense. They were smart enough to not mess with the movies that were shot in 4:3, so why would they mess with TV shot in the same ratio?
