Folks, I arrived at the park at my usual time of 6:50 this morning. Usually there's a car or two ahead of me at the parking structure entrance. This morning there were about 50. What made it worse was that once inside, there were cones setup to merge four lanes of traffic into one. That seemed like a really bad idea, especially given how busy it was and would be. I saw a lot of people ignore and drive around them. Once I parked and got down to the security lines, there were only about six lanes open. Which meant that the lines were long. I didn't get to the park gates until around 7:30. Those were also long but at least they were letting people in.

I was able to meet a friend at the rope well before the drop (which was 7:50 -- ten minutes early, presumably to allow people to get into the park and spread out as they tried to get their ROTR boarding group). The scene there was pretty hectic. It's one of the most crowded days I've ever seen at the rope. No surprise, given all of the traffic and the crowds at the gate. The path through the castle was closed, which meant that we had to go the long way around -- between the Matterhorn and Alice, like we used to do when there was some big refurb being done on the castle. We manged to be first on PP and still had a few minutes to spare before zero hour.

ROTR potential riders take note: I already had the app open on my phone and was at the ROTR screen. However at 8:00, I couldn't get the BG button to activate. Meanwhile, two friends next to me were able to get their BGs quickly. After trying a few more times to get the screen to refresh, I closed the app and restarted it. That worked... except by the time I was able to get my BG I was issued... 130. That's useless and I knew I wouldn't be riding today. But I didn't mind much. It would have been nice because friends have told me how cool it is but I can always try again next weekend. Meanwhile, one friend got 27 and another got 24. I guess it just wasn't my day, at least as far as ROTR goes. The attraction didn't open until about 9:30 and I believe it broke down at least twice during the day, one time for something like two hours, or so I'm told.

So after Mr. Toad and Dumbo, I went to meet a friend and her family over at Galactic Grill. I'd brought some gifts for her daughters and then we all did a few rounds of Buzz. That was really nice.

Despite the earlier crowds, the park scene wasn't horrible. In fact, it was better than I expected it to be. But still pretty thick.

Did reasonably on Buzz today. Broke 2M once and then scored 1.9M. I had first and second place.

I have some of the new ROTR maps, if anyone would like one or two (pics below).

In closing, I also met up with the daughter of some old friends. She's a wonderful young lady and we had a great time. As I was about to leave around 3:00, I connected with her and seven of her friends. As I walked them towards the Matterhorn, one of them suggested that it would be fun to do Buzz. But the line was at least 25 minutes long and FPs were being issued for about 90 minutes after the pull time. So I told them to hang on and I'd see what I could do. I found a CM I know at the ride and asked if she could help us out a bit. She was very kind and brought all of us in through the FP entrance. What was great was that as we walked through, the group of kids (16-17) began to clap and chant my name. That made me laugh and I absolutely loved it. Lately I've been dealing with a failed relationship of sorts that's been very difficult and some days it really gets to me (like the past three days) . When they did that, it made me forget all of my troubles. And then when we exited the ride, they all saw that I had the top two scores (2M and 1.9M). They began to chant my name again and everyone looked over. It made me feel great and it cracked me up. A few hours ago I got a wonderful video from all of them (second post below) in which they thanked me for Buzz and all of my park tips. Really made my day great.

Park pics and then bed. Really tired tonight.

EDIT: Sorry - apparently the link was broken. Should work now :-).

Lastly, this absolutely made my day. My friend's daughter and her partners in crime sent me this wonderful video a few hours ago. I'd helped them with some insider tips and the like earlier at DL. It absolutely made my night; it helped to get my mind off of the my crash/burn of sorts.
Rob's praises.

Thanks as always. I've been hearing that you should have the app open but not the boarding group section until 8am otherwise it could not register and you have to out and back into the app for it to work.

Looking forward to hearing how you like it.
I was lucky enough to ride in WDW and looking forward to ride it in DL in April.

Great pictures. Love your comments on your experiences of the day and your enteraction with your "fans". Sending lots of Pixie Dust your way for a fabulous and magical 2020.

I always love your updates! Thanks for the tips on ROTR. Keep your chin up....dating is HARD! There is the perfect person for you out there. (I believe this for me, too :)

Sounds a lot like Saturday! We were able to ride the ride with back up boarding group 84 and loved it! Rope drop and opening were like nothing I had ever seen! So many people! But yet the day ended up being great and we actually rode a ton!

Do they issue boarding groups out past what they expect to be able to load during a normal park day, or was it "useless" for you because you knew you would be leaving the park early?

They are actually being fairly conservative with the number of boarding groups given out so far. Then any BG numbers above that are Backup BG numbers. If you look at the new chart on page 101 of the ROTR Superthread, you can compare how many groups were given out each day and how many actually got to ride.

Hi Rob, thanks for the awesome posts! We hope to run into you one day in the parks! I do (jealously) see your scores on occasion on Buzz, so I know you were there...

We were there for MM Saturday and they let us in about 15 minutes early! We were shocked to be the second group on Peter Pan and did not have to fast walk/run/avoid stampede etc... to get there...Fantasyland was empty for nearly the entire hour+ as everyone was waiting to log in. It was a surreal scene on a Saturday with MM to see Fantasyland so empty. We accomplished so much pre-the new "Disney moment of silence" boarding group free for all.

We got back-up BG 95 on Saturday and rode on Sunday (long story, see post in RotR BG thread as it's too long to re-post). We return over President's weekend to do it all over again.

I think they issue far more than they know they can accommodate just in case things go perfectly and guests in the 100+ BGs can get on. As I recall, the app indicated that BGs above 81 would not be admitted. Certainly in my case I planned to leave early and knew that in the unlikely chance my group got “called,” it would be no earlier than 11:00. I believe that attraction closed around 10:00 anyway. A friend with BG 89 didn’t even get close. I wonder if they also do it so people don’t get angry that they didn’t get a BG. I got mine at 8:01:30 and I got 130. That makes me believe that the assignment is random. Two friends next to me got BGs in the twenties. I’ll try again this Sunday. This time with the app on the correct screen :-).

You're welcome. It's always nice to be appreciated.

I'm nearly always there on Sundays. These days I wear a red Cubs cap with a blue and red "C" in the middle.

Something DL-related happened to me this morning. I went in for a haircut and one of the stylists recognized me from the last time I came in four months ago. She remembered that I was an AP-holder and said she saw me outside of Space Mountain recently and couldn't remember my name. Her co-worker also has an AP and we traded stories. When I asked about Buzz, she said she'd destroy me on that attraction. I smiled to myself and asked what her high score was. It was around 800,000. Nothing wrong with that at all. It's actually a pretty good score. But then I showed her a pic I took of the scoreboard last Sunday. I told her that if she saw me at the park some day, I'd be happy to go through the ride with her and give her some tips.

Have you done Buzz at Magic Kingdom? We were there last week and were so disappointed. It is hard to aim and has some weird whirling light effect that made me nauseous. Kind of a bummer. Ah well we will be back to DL hopefully next year.

Have you done Buzz at Magic Kingdom?
Yes, but it’s been a few years. I didn’t begin to get good at Buzz until I moved out here seven years ago. The last time I visited DW was about eleven years ago.

As an aside, I did Buzz at the Shanghai park nearly two years ago. It was much more modern than our version, of course, since their park opened in July, 2016. It has several advantages over ours - lessons learned from the shortcomings of the DL version, I suspect. For example, the laser sighting is brighter and is always on so it’s much easier to target. Also, cruiser laser colors alternate so it’s easier to distinguish which one is yours, unlike at DL. Lastly, all of the targets are virtual. That is, they’re rendered on monitors, which, actually, I don’t like. So in theory, their ride is better than ours because it’s more modern and accurate. However, as with all attractions there that we also have at the original park, ours is still better for many reasons, one of which is that Disneyland has magic. I never felt that at the Shanghai park.

Thankyou for the tips on boarding groups! And thankyou for sending the new map! This will go up with my other map from 1972 featuring the Main Street Electrical Parade! Grandson has been looking at his map everynight before bedtime, making plans! 😊
