Restaurant Rewind: Memories of more Magical Times. February 2020 Dining Report. UPDATE 13th OCTOBER - CALIFORNIA GRILL DINNER!

BOMA BREAKFAST

Today after waking up refreshed and checking out the animals from our balcony (Giraffes AND Zebras!) we made our way down to Boma for breakfast!

485699

We’d done the dinner buffet before and been super impressed so it felt only right to take advantage of our morning proximity to the restaurant and give the breakfast spread a try.

We were seated at a lovely two top with a great server who brought me the largest cup of POG juice I’ve ever seen. I was delighted. I usually want to whisper “leave the jug” when they pour me some but I didn’t even have to. You’ve already captured my heart, Boma.

We headed to the buffet and there was a great variety of options. Some a bit adventurous, some standard buffet fare, a great selection of sweet and savoury.

I wanted to be brave and try the bobotie but I really hate capsicum and onion and even in a buffet style where I could navigate around bits I didn’t like I just wasn’t game enough.

I started with my plate here:

485705

The goat cheese scrambled eggs were awesome! I’m a massive goats cheese fan and I was definitely all in on the flavour of these, plus the eggs were cooked really well which was great. I also tried the carve to order ham and it was so delicious. The glaze on the outside was sweet and smoky and this was just down right tasty. I’m not usually a breakfast sausage person but for some reason the look of this really appealed to me and it was as delicious as it looked. The plantain was good and something we don’t usually get in Australia and then - bacon. Because you can never not have bacon. But my heart really goes out to these tater tots at Boma. They are just deliciously crispy little hash brown style goodness with a nice kick of seasoning to them. Emily and I may or may not have eaten more than our fair share of these.

I also tried their oatmeal/porridge which I wouldn’t recommend. It was really bland and I’m usually a porridge fan but definitely skip it. It was so boring I didn’t even bother taking a photo apparently.

I then went onto a more sweet style plate. We had waffles, which like all Disney waffles were fluffy and crisp and this time they had Mickey AND Simba - so you know we had to get both.

485706

I was really excited after reading reviews on it to try the French toast bread pudding. I usually really like bread pudding but this just wasn’t my thing. It was just very meh and honestly not worth the hype in my opinion. But perhaps I just went in with too high expectations. It wasn’t bad, there are just a lot of great options on this buffet and I wouldn’t waste tummy space on it again.

THIS, however - can have all the tummy space it wants.

485707

Ooooh girl just look at it. This sticky bun topped with pecans was the perfect sweet breakfast treat. It was soft and sticky in the middle and the pecan crunchy top was a textural delight.

485708

Cross section of joy.

I mean come on? Look at that beauty! This was the star of the buffet for me and I’d be lying if I hadn’t daydreamed about it since while staring at my sad boring quarantine breakfast toast.

We loved Boma breakfast and would definitely recommend this and do it again. The atmosphere is lovely, the food is fantastic and really fresh. Overall I think the breakfast here would suit a lot of people as it has such a great variety and can suit a lot of different tastes. It’s such a wonderful space and even though lots of buffets are often hectic, I come out of Boma feeling like I’ve had a relaxing dining experience and most importantly, completely full!

Mmmm wish I was eating these now!
But my heart really goes out to these tater tots at Boma.
😂 what is it about Disney tater tots? Anywhere I've had them on property they're delicious and taste 1000x better than tots at home lol

Funny, I do not like bread pudding but I LOVE this one! We've done Boma breakfast a few times and think it's just about the best breakfast on property, definitely the best buffet. Glad you enjoyed!

Wow! Breakfast at Boma looks so yummy! We've been to dinner but never breakfast. Going to have to give it a try.

I hear ya about the boring quarantine breakfast food. Mine is cereal and more cereal. :crazy2: I'm living vicariously through your report. Keep it up!

I know Disney tater tots are always better! Must be cooked in magic! And think it definitely says something for the uniqueness of this bread pudding that it can change peoples perception of the dish whether it be positive or negative! Definitely worth people giving it a go even if it’s something they wouldn’t usually try for that reason.

Found your dining review today! I am looking forward to reading more!

Yay! Welcome aboard and thanks so much for reading along!

I loved the dinner at Boma and honestly the breakfast was stellar too - how do they get it all so right?! And one day we will have non quarantine breakfasts! One day! And they will taste extra delicious! Until then we’ll have to close our eyes and pretend haha!

Keep em coming!

Thanks so much! Will do!

DISNEY SPRINGS DINING DELIGHTS

After having a delightful lazy morning and early afternoon in the watering hole at AKL we made our way out, shook ourselves dry and headed off in search of food.

Disney springs was our destination of choice and we had been so excited to finally get a chance to try some of the offerings here. On previous trips we’d been so busy with park hopping and resort visiting that we hadn’t really given the Springs a good look around except for going to Homecomin’ last trip which we very much enjoyed. So we decided that this trip we were going to prioritise having a mosey around the shops and a graze on their food offerings

After a bit of a wander we headed to

486498

Also known as

CHICKEN GUY:

Since we heard about this through the DFB, Em and I were so excited to try this. We love dipping sauces and the idea that there was so much variety just filled us with joy.

We had an ambitious plan of attack for DS that meant hitting as many new places as possible so we were going for small portions. We decided on 3 crispy tenders to share but also 3 sauces. That seemed reasonable. One sauce per tender - definitely not overkill!

After much debate we settled on Special sauce, Buttermilk ranch and Bleu cheese.

486499

Ranch is not a big thing in Australia and neither is blue cheese dressing so while these might seem like not particularly interesting choices to the average American, we were excited to give them a try. And if it has “special” in the title Emily is going to try it because it sounds secret and exciting. What is it? Our taste buds must find out!

The tenders were really great. Nice and juicy while having a really great tasting crispy coating. I think even without the sauces these are a real winner and I’d definitely get them again if I was looking for a quick bite.

486507

The sauces were pretty good. We both really enjoyed the special sauce the most. It had a nice vinegary mustardy flavour and was all really well balanced. The buttermilk ranch was also pretty good but I’ve had better ranch before. The one that was the biggest disappointment and the one I wanted to like the most was the blue cheese dressing. I had never had blue cheese dressing before going to Sci Fi Dine-In and getting it there and was blown away. I love blue cheese and dipping things like French fries and chicken into it? You Americans are doing this right. However there was just something not quite right about this one. The blue cheese was sort of lost and it was super lemony. Maybe it was just the batch we got but with so many other sauces to try I wouldn’t get it again.

After we finished up at chicken guy we wandered over to Polite Pig. We had heard great things about this place and wanted to give it a go, and specifically try to get one of the coveted Gideons cookies.
So until the clock struck 4pm we decided to wait and try out their food.

POLITE PIG

We decided to go with our sampling’s idea again and got some shareables. Our main pick was

BURNT ENDS BBQ MEATBALLS
House Brisket, Cheddar Grits and Layla’s sweet BBQ sauce.

486501

We really enjoyed these! They had a great Smokey flavour and the grits that accompanied them just worked so well together as a dish. I’d say the best thing about these was the texture. They were firm enough to hold together like a meatball but when you dove your fork in they pulled apart like a pot roast consistency. I really liked these and would definitely get them again.

We also decided to do the Polite Pig deal of try 3 Market sides for $15. We settled on

SWEET POTATO TOTS with Parmesan cheese.

486502

These were good but not fantastic. They were definitely the weakest of the 3 sides but we still enjoyed them enough to eat our fair share. They could have done well to have a bit more seasoning and a bit more cheese.

MAC AND CHEESE with Aged Cheddar and Breadcrumbs

486503

I’m a lover of Mac and cheese so this was a definite try for us and I’m so glad we did. It was creamy and rich with a great textural crunch from the breadcrumb topping. I really liked this and would definitely recommend giving it a go if you’re a Mac and cheese person.

And lastly

GRILLED STREET CORN with Chipotle Aioli and breadcrumbs

486504

Guys, sometimes when I’m staring into my fridge, hoping magical delicious will materialise - I hope it will be this corn. I don’t know if it was just the day and I was just really into it or if it’s always this good but it was just so so good. It was juicy with just the right amount of char on the outside and the chipotle aioli gave it a little kick that just knocked it out of the park. The breadcrumbs ontop gave it a nice crunch and honestly I think I need to work out how to make this at home because writing it out has given me corn sadness and I didn’t even know that could be a thing haha! If you like street corn, give this a go. It’s super yum.

As we were sitting waiting for the clock to countdown we overheard a group of southerners digging into their own feasts. The head of the table was looking so frustrated with himself and we couldn’t figure out why. A staff member popped over to see if they needed anything and he looked at him with a furrowed brow and said “I’m from the south. I know good BBQ, we’re in Disney, it shouldn’t be this good - but this is the best damn BBQ I’ve ever had”. Haha!

So there you have it. If you were on the fence about giving this place a go, while I have no idea about that guys credentials as a BBQ expert, and we’re certainly not being from Australia, we all loved it and were in resounding favour of Polite Pig. So that should at least give you reason to give it a try!

But our adventure there was not quite done. At 3.30pm on the advice of the waitress we hopped in what we dubbed “the crazy cookie queue”. I say this because they keep you in the regular queue but slightly off to the side, so every single time someone goes up to order, they wait behind you thinking you’re in the normal queue, and someone has to ask “are you here for the cookie?” And they look at you with concern and worry and they pass a line of people at a BBQ shop waiting for a single chocolate chip cookie.

It was worth almost being committed to a mental asylum though because look at this bad boy:

486505

This cookie was definitely worth they hype but ONLY if you’re a dark chocolate person. This is not a super sweet cookie despite the amount of chocolate. The sea salt scattered on top and the use of dark chocolate makes it less sweet than you’d imagine but certainly still rich. It took us two days of munching our way through it in sections to even finish it. It was huge and delicious and while expensive, you won’t eat this thing and wonder where your money went. It’s a biggy.

486508

Inside view!

We had Magic Kingdom After hours that evening and while we knew we could eat popcorn and ice cream to our hearts content we decided to get something more substantial to leave in the room for when we got back in case we were like children at a birthday party and needed some actual food after a sugar crash.

We decided to give Blaze Pizza a go because we loved the idea of being able to choose your own toppings and pizzas great whether it’s cold or hot so we decided it would be a good post MK adventure snack

BLAZE PIZZA

486506

We decided on a red sauce base with mozzarella, feta, blue cheese and cherry tomatoes. It ended up being such a good combo and we absolutely loved the quality of the pizza here. The base was crispy and light while the toppings were cooked just right. Despite having a decent sized Italian population where we live our town just can’t seem to get pizza right so this was so exciting for us. I know lots of people can get awesome pizza where they are but this did not disappoint us and was a welcome end to a very fun and exhausting MK After Hours.

I won’t go into it too much because it’s not super food related but the MK After Hours was honestly one of the best things we did all trip. The lines were basically non existent and I got to go on Peter Pan’s flight 5 times in a row with no wait (Yeah I know I’m one of those PPF people but what can I say? Flying over London doesn’t get old for me!) We got to do every ride we wanted and lots like BTMM more than once. We got to try the popcorn which we’d never had (and enjoyed) and Emily tried one of every ice cream available and loved it. We enjoyed this so much we booked a second one for later in the trip and while it was busier due to Presidents Day weekend, we still had a really great time. I know the After Hours are expensive but honestly we got more done in that three hours than we’d ever gotten done in a full park day and definitely felt like it was worth it for us.

I know this was a long post so thanks for sticking with me!

I am loooooving your report so far!! It's such a welcome distraction! That Polite Pig corn is the best thing I ate on our last trip. So delicious! Looking forward to reading more!

Love the report. You had me LOL when you mentioned having the pizza in the room in case you returned from MK like children after a birthday party with a sugar rush. I get like that myself after too much sugar so I understand!

Love this idea!!!!!

Wow, how have I never heard of these. Burnt ends and meatballs all in one? Sounds and looks amazing

486504

Speaking of amazing Mexican street corn how to I love thee. Oddly I actually really don't care for corn, but slap some mayo and cheese on there and I'm all in. Think if I go to the frig now some will be in there :confused3

I’m from the south. I know good BBQ, we’re in Disney, it shouldn’t be this good - but this is the best damn BBQ I’ve ever had”. Haha!
Wow, that is a testament right there

How have I never heard about this cookie or a cookie craze???? Think this might magically appear in my frig too? I'm not even a huge dark chocolate fan but man that looks like cookie perfection

SUNSHINE SEASONS

Today we were off to Epcot to reunite with the giant golf ball that is Spaceship Earth!

We were so worried we wouldn’t get a chance to ride this again as they announced it would be closing after our last trip. We felt like we hadn’t really had the chance to say goodbye so we felt so lucky to have that last crack at riding it before it goes down for refurb.

After our trip into the past we headed into the Land Pavilion for a bite to eat. We knew we had a decent lunch coming up but we wanted to have something to tide us over til then. We settled on Sunshine Seasons!

488214

Butternut squash soup.

488215

This was a nice little snack and the little pumpkin seeds on top gave it a nice little crunch. It definitely could have done with some more seasoning but it was a nice, easy snack and did the job.

We also got an

Odwalla Lemonade Slushy:

488217

Oh my gosh I love this thing. I think I got it at least 3 times over the course of the two weeks we were there. It’s the perfect thing to cool you down after being out in the hot Florida sun. It’s nice and tart and has a great thick icy consistency. If you’re looking for a mid day refresh - this is the one.

And lastly we have the absolute star of the show:

The Paint Mini Cake:

488218

488219

What a beauty! It’s fun, it’s cute, but most of all it was friggen delicious! The cake itself was moist and tasty but the frosting is where this cake really shone. It was light and creamy with a peanut butter flavour that was just enough. Nothing in this dessert was heavy handed. The whole thing felt like a whipped, cloud-like heavenly treat. I hope they bring this back next Festival of the Arts or keep it as a permanent bakery item at Sunshine Seasons cause it was such a winner and I’d definitely get it again.

Your trip to Disney Springs (forever known to me as Downtown Disney) looked fantastic! I'm from the South and the food from Polite Pig looks just as good (if not better) then what we get here. I have that on my list of places to try. And that cookie...I am in love!
Sign me up for that cake from Sunshine Seasons. I love anything PB related. Love the beautiful design as well!

Loving your report! Your writing style always has me LOL! So entertaining, and descriptive. I'm drooling over that Boma sticky bun. I've been wanting to try and see if we can grab one of those Gideon's cookies, but so far our timing hasn't been right, but we do love the Polite Pig! Your dessert party treats look scrumptious! One of these days we're going to try Blaze Pizza. There's just so many choices we can't fit them all in. Have you done D-Luxe Burger yet? We've only eaten there once, but loved it. Can't wait to read more!
