Rise of the Chunkies! A Jan 2020 Trip Report! NEW 7/14 THE END of our TRIP!!

Halloween Party is a must!! Yay! There are so many fun Food and Wine events too, although with a toddler it may be hard to attend. Maybe you can do a solo event, LOL. I would definitely add breakfast at Topolino if you like characters. It was one of the best meals of our trip!

Haha you just think you're flush with cash but you've already spent it, figuratively, at Disney, LOL. 😉
Can’t wait to see your Topolino review! I was able to snag a 7:40 for the Friday of our trip so we can eat and then zoom over to a park—likely Studios for a final Star Wars fix. DD is super into Mickey (or Bickey, as she calls him) and gang right now. I’m so excited for that one. I couldn’t find anything for our May trip, and it was the first thing I grabbed for September. It looks SO nice and the food all sounds delicious!

I did read it, so overall did you like the skyliner or were you not a fan? Did you think they made it easy enough for those with wheelchairs or scooters to get around?

Well, it was just me. I didn't like riding alone. Eventually I got used to it, but I much prefer sitting on a bus knowing that Fran is strapped in behind me. We don't talk much, but I know she's there. It was weird having her 10 cars in front of or behind me. Most people don't travel with two ECVs so it's not an issue. Getting on and off was fine.

I used to be like that but since we travel so frequently it's not too bad now and because of the owners locker it's easier to prepare. Although I spend way too much time figuring out what to wear!

I used to be much better, but from our first trip together Fran has always been a PITA with packing. She can't plan ahead and is always scrambling at the last moment. This last trip was better. I guess after 23 years, my complaining about her procrastination has finally paid off.

Oh interesting! That's what I figured - that it was a super complex ride system, but good to know some insider information!

Not so much insider information, although the friend I was talking to may have been talking from insider info. But he was talking to Jill and I in the CL on our check out day. We were at DL the same weekend you were at WDW in March. He was explaining about the process. His partner and friends had been in the park to score a BG at opening and since they had a high number came back to the hotel for some grub. We explained our situation the day before which you'll hear about in a future Bonus feature. That one was quite the experience.

They told us we had 2 hours, LOL. And we figured with the skyliner being so quick, it would be easy to get there! I guess we were lucky that the skyliner didn't stop for a lengthy period of time!

I don't trust the skyliner anymore!

Well I skipped most of the resistance stuff so I can be surprised when we finally do ride it, whenever that will be but so happy to hear you loved it. Of course I expected nothing less.

Those rooms at Rivera look gorgeous. Disney is definitely upping their game there and at the Coronado expansion. Im all about the more modern rooms.

So glad you all got to have a mini-meet up. Those of us not there were not jealous in the least and enjoying at home on our couches I am very sure :D

What an amazing first day!! Oh my god I so want to ride ROTR......:(:( I miss my parks!!!

All the food and drinks look so amazing from Food and Wine!! YUM!

We have a ressie at Topolino's for our next trip and I'd really love to be able to take a tour of one of the rooms, too. We toured a 3 bed grand villa at Aulani last month....oh my gawwwwwd.....so amazing!! I think we've found the perfect spot to celebrate when my husband retires haha (you know, in 15 or 20 years lol). Hopefully I'll have even more points by then :teeth::lovestruc

Rise of the Resistance holds the distinction of being one of only a few rides that have made me cry from how amazing it was. The other ones are Forbidden Journey and Hagrid's at Universal then Flight of Passage at DAK. It really is the most immersive and incredible attraction Disney has ever done. I agree with you, seeing those AT-ATs then seeing Finn and being lifted up to be face-to-face with an AT-AT... I still get chills. And yes, the entrance into load for the ride was unreal... I have a video from when I rode it on the last evening Studios was opened and a lot of people I was with had only ridden it for the first time and you can hear someone saying, "THAT IS NOT A DOOR!" Incredible. It genuinely felt like they put you into those films. The only negative I can ever say about that attraction is that there are still so many SWGE cast members who have not ridden it and that always bothers me since if there are any people I know who deserve to ride it, it's a large group of them.
Right? It literally made me tear up, I couldn't believe how good it was!! It's basically the ride we've all been waiting for. I mean Smuggler's Run is fun but the best part about that ride is being INSIDE the MF, the ride itself is ok
That AT-AT section is my absolute favorite part, it is just stunning, the scale, the imagery...amazing!
And that "door" in the interrogation room...soooo cool!!
I wish you all get a chance to ride. It doesn't seem right that you can work in GE and have not ridden it's top attraction!
Those Riviera rooms look so homey. I love the style they have. Gosh, it makes me upset that I never made a point to check them out when I had so many opportunities to do so. Oh well.
It's such a beautiful resort. I really enjoyed our visit there!
I'm not sure if I'm more drawn to the Tuna dish or the Chicken Fingers. I guess that describes me as a person. And you're probably right about those chicken fingers having way more calories than the salad even if the salad was portioned bigger lol
They were both good! I know what you mean, i am a comfort/kid food person at heart but I also love a nice gourmet experience too. At Disney I can have both!
For me it's the sound it makes when it goes green and you can head on in...sigh....
Love it!
I just love that. It must be so much fun to be those CM's...I bet there was a lot of applicants!
I'd totally love to just be mean to people all day, I think it's harder than it sounds but it would be fun, LOL
This was just so cool. I hope I get a chance to ride many more times because I couldn't take it all in and get pictures on one ride through.
I know! So much to see and absorb!
I am living proof of this. I was so scared of this drop I second guessed whether I should even ride so many times because I knew the drop was there. It made me worry the whole time. But now that I've done it and I know I don't have to stress about it anymore I can't wait to do this ride again...multiple times!
I was scared too, but once I found out where it is, you just mentally prepare for it and it's fine. The 2nd time we rode was soooo good cos I didn't have that scary anticipation!
I'm here, I'm here! So happy to see another Chunky TR! :hyper:
Hi Tracy!!! I miss you!!
Is this a good thing or a terrifying thing?
Let's just say ghosts are only good at Disney
I'm sure there were at least half a dozen or more people saying or thinking "Wow. What a loser! Come on lady! Don't you know you need a ticket???"
Yes it was a fluke! I didn't remember!
Thanks! You're a lifesaver!
I couldn't let you ride such a boring ride.

It is soooo good I loved it! And perfect before heading over to the Studios or Epcot!

Yeah I can see you being anxious if you're separated, especially if you're that many cars apart.
I used to be much better, but from our first trip together Fran has always been a PITA with packing. She can't plan ahead and is always scrambling at the last moment. This last trip was better. I guess after 23 years, my complaining about her procrastination has finally paid off.
LOL I guess she's finally listened!

Ooh interesting. Steve had a not so good experience on this trip. It left us confused. We just got some wrong info and we didn't know what to do. but oh well.
I don't trust the skyliner anymore!
Haha I think I a overly optimistic at times.

You will think it's amazing, even if you aren't into SW!

Me too! Give me modern comforts any day!!

I thought of you a lot Chunkylush, especially when ordering my Annapurna Zing!
Ooh another one to read! Thank you!!
Thank you for joining!
What an amazing first day!! Oh my god I so want to ride ROTR......:(:( I miss my parks!!!
I was so depressed after Disney closed and I was in denial and didn't really want to talk about anything but I finally got over it and now I am all over the DIS, LOL

It really is!

Wow a grand villa! That sounds soooo nice. I'd love to stay in a bungalow at the Poly one year but I don't know how I'm even going to muster enough points for that haha. I will just have to gawk from afar.
Riviera is soooo pretty! I love it! Good plan for retirement!

Day 2 Part 1: We Rise to Brunch

It seemed like it was deja vu but the next day we were up again before the crack of dawn, back in an Uber and back to DHS. This time we were meeting with our friend Chunkydust who was brave enough to drive to DHS and fight the morning crowds to ride Rise with us!

We decided to get there a little earlier and this was the sight we were dealing with.
Honestly it was worse that yesterday's crowds!:

We wondered why we were doing this again but had to keep telling ourselves that Rise was worth it.

I still have my hooker-ish makeup so that hasn't changed.

We, amazingly made it in before 7am and met up with Chunkydust who was also worried she wouldn't make it in as well ,but we were all there together and so already a huge sigh of relief! I had been texting with Caroline @disneyAndi14 and her and her DD Andi were also in the park as well. We made our way to the Toy Story entrance to meet up with them and wait in the general "corral" area until it was 7am. It is definitely nice to have people to wait with since you couldn't really do anything else until the clock hit 7am.

This time we got boarding group 43...actually Chunkydust got it. My phone and Steve's phone didn't quite make it through. Andi however got some insane BG, what was it like, 8? LOL so they were pretty much in the first set of groups called!

The 3 of us instead went over to Slinky Dog for what was seriously, the most amazing ride on a coaster I've ever had. Look at that amazing sky!!! This alone was worth the early morning rise. I've never seen it so beautiful!

You have to watch this video, it's the most amazing sunrise you've seen:

Am I right? We all thought it was so beautiful! It was a nice side perk that comes with waking up so early, although you have to hope for nice weather.

We then went to Toy Story where I beat Steve's butt again. YAY!

What a great morning so far, I think I even beat my personal best score! Now it was time for breakfast!

Since we were in TSL already we went to check out the items at Woody's Lunchbox. Chunkydust and I decided on the Breakfast Bowl and Steve got the Turkey sandwich.

Breakfast Bowl - Hearty portion of Potato Barrels smothered in Smoked Brisket Country Gravy, Scrambled Eggs and a sprinkling of Green Onions.

The tots were quite tasty! They had sausage gravy, cheese and scrambled eggs on them.

Smoked Turkey Breakfast Sandwich -
Thick-sliced Smoked Turkey Breast, Melted Swiss Cheese, and Scrambled Eggs on Grilled Sourdough. This was the surprising winner. I really liked it so I finished it and Steve ate my tots instead.

It was nice breakfast, not something I'd make a destination but if you're in TSL anyways they are a solid choice. The seating there though is always crazy packed. I think we ate half of it standing up because we couldn't find a decent table for 10 minutes.

We went back on Slinky Dog, this time we used some FPs, and it was just as much fun, although by then the sun had already rose so the sky wasn't as cool, still pretty though. We then did another round on TSMM!

Steve wanted to beat me but he made a good effort.

I think we were trying to some sort off trigger happy pose but not sure if it came through, LOL.

When we left the ride it seemed that our boarding group was called! YAY! So we all headed over to Batuu.

Oh man, it was so good!
Even better the 2nd time because you are less anxious and are more relaxed to enjoy more of the nuances of the ride.

This video below shows the coolest entrance into a ride ever!
Don't watch if you are avoiding spoilers!

We were all on cloud 9 after getting to ride such fun things that morning and rode Rise all before lunchtime! It's such an amazing ride, you can't help but stop to reflect a moment. But then you get hungry and are like, ok let's get to lunch! Lunch today was at Epcot so we headed out to the Skyliner.

We ran into @ariane37 and @Jenny Sanders on the way out! It was so nice bumping into them!
We had a little chat but we all had to get to our respective rides/restaurants but first a picture!

We left DHS and hopped on the skyliner. There were no issues and we arrived at Epcot! I'm sure the line to get into the park was pretty long as it was all weekend. We were heading to Canada for lunch so not too far away.

When we passed by UK, I noticed this silhouette of Peter Pan on the side of one of the buildings. I had never noticed it before but I realized it was only there for Festival of the Arts! So fun!

Since this was brand new and only the 2nd day, we were very excited to check it out and be one of their guinea pigs, LOL.

I wish I took a picture of the menu but I did not so I'm sharing this from another website:

67 dollars is a little steep for a brunch that is not AYCE, but we are always up for trying something new so I made ADRs immediately when this brunch was announced last year.

We started with cocktails and you had your choice of a Bloody Caesar or a Mimosa. Steve and I got the Bloody Caesars and Chunkydust got a mimosa. The Bloody Caesar is just a Bloody Mary made with clamato juice instead of tomato. So it has the added flavor right in the juice. It was very savory and flavorful and I really enjoyed this drink! If you like bloody marys you'd probably like this as well! Note that clamato does have clam juice in it but apparently it's been reconstituted so I think it just makes it salty, I don't actually think it tastes like clams or seafood at all.

The bread basket was nice, there were lots of selection plus the pretzel bread (my fave), of course. The yogurt was served in little bowl, almost a ramekin. They also forgot to give us a sharing spoon until I asked. It would be better if there was a larger bowl and serving spoon or just individual ramekins. It was fine, and I liked the maple flavor but the yogurt was a little watery.

Chunkydust and myself ordered the Avocado Toast as a first course. It was the prettiest presentation of the toast! The portion was quite small though, I felt like there wasn't enough avocado, and it just seemed like a nice little bruschetta instead. It was good though but could have been larger.

Steve got the Cheddar Cheese Soup, which is always good. Although it is served at all the other meals so not unique to the brunch.

My entree was the lobster and grits.

So the lobster was very nice, but the grits very salty. I wish it would have been more balanced as it would have been a really good dish.

Salt seems to be a thing here, as Steve had gotten the Montreal-spiced corned beef hash. It was topped with two poached eggs. Frankly he could only eat the eggs as the dish was really salty! It was like someone had accidentally salted the dish twice.

It's too bad as it looked like a really nice dish. Chunkydust also got this but I don't think nearly as salty as Steves. It must have been an accident! Our server noticed that Steve didn't touch his dish other than the eggs, so offered to bring him something else. Steve did the other end of the spectrum and went with the Cinnamon Roll French Toast Bread Pudding.

It was good but very sweet, so definitely more like a dessert and I cant imagine eating more than half of this! It was sweeter than the ohana bread pudding!

For my dessert I got the Coffee and Doughnuts. The Doughnuts were more like a bundt cake and not really like a doughnut and it was also very dense. The coffee mousse I just wasn't a fan of, but then again I don't love mousses. In the pic below the mouse is actually under the layer of whipped cream.

Steve got the maple creme brulee, which was very good and I ended up eating most of his dessert in any case, LOL. I believe this is also offered on their regular menu.

Overall, brunch was just ok food-wise. Service was good and the place was relatively uncrowded. It was honestly more crowded outside so it was a nice relaxing time. I would only do this brunch again it if they change up the menu. I thought there would be a bit more selection, and I fully expected there to be steak on the menu. The only steak they had was a steak tartar and that is not usually my favorite. I like my meat to have a bit of char and texture on it, ya know? I thought a nice steak salad would have been perfect for this brunch but perhaps they would consider it in the future. Granted, it was only the 2nd day of service for this brunch so they are learning. But I figure the food should have been perfected before, no?

After our brunch we chilled for a bit and hopped on to Frozen Ever After via FP. Crazy wait times that day!

Sadly our friend Chunkydust had to leave to head back home but we were so happy we got to ride RoTR together!
Until next time!

Coming up...we made a last minute decision to do 4 parks in one day! Do we make it?!?

That sunrise is absolutely stunning! Nothing compares to Florida sunrises or sets, for real. It almost seemed like a different ride on Slinky with that in the background. Gorgeous!

Glad to hear you all got to Rise together again! And omg that door sequence gets me every time. Especially when you're with someone who has never ridden it before. The only thing that comes close is the exit from the Mickey and Minnie's pre-show. Incredible imagineering.

Oooo, Le Cellier brunch? That seems exactly like the thing that would be perfect for a future birthday for moi. How lucky you got to be guinea pigs for that!

Awesome that you got on Rise AGAIN :) Andi sure did have some luck with a low BG like that!!!

The sunrise over SDD is gorgeous. We rode Dumbo as the sun came up one morning on our Babymoon at WDW :) That's the only other time I've seen a sky quite so beautiful!

Bummer that the food wasn't all you expected at Le Cellier. It certainly looked beautiful though!

It was nice chatting with you all before our day started!
Wow the sunrise was beautiful. We went in TSM right away and I didn’t know how beautiful it was, thanks for the pictures!
I am bummed we didn’t do SDD right away very cool!
Thanks for the review of the new brunch! I find entrees at times are so salty at Disney!
It was a busy day!

It seemed like there wasn't that many people here, so we thought it was a good sign (warning, it was NOT).

Duh, duh, duuuuunnn....

Look at you too!!! So cute!!

I still have my hooker-ish makeup so that hasn't changed.

I really need to make this a priority next trip.
AWwwww, such a great picture!

Yours is the 2nd review I've read of the Le Cellier brunch in a week. Both looked amazing but super heavy!! I told @franandaj it'd be hard to pull me away from my beloved Cali Grill brunch, but I'm slowly being convinced I need to try this one.

Holy smokes! That's insane!
I still have my hooker-ish makeup so that hasn't changed.

:lmao:
I had been texting with Caroline @disneyAndi14 and her and her DD Andi were also in the park as well. We made our way to the Toy Story entrance to meet up with them
Nice! :)
This time we got boarding group 43...actually Chunkydust got it. My phone and Steve's phone didn't quite make it through. Andi however got some insane BG, what was it like, 8? LOL so they were pretty much in the first set of groups called!
I read about Andi's amazing skilz with the boarding groups. Glad you all got on. :)

Beautiful!
You have to watch this video, it's the most amazing sunrise you've seen:
What a great video! Stunning!
We then went to Toy Story where I beat Steve's butt again. YAY!
 Good for you!
What a great morning so far, I think I even beat my personal best score!
Yuss!
The tots were quite tasty! They had sausage gravy, cheese and scrambled eggs on them.
Not a huge tater tots fan, so not sure about this one. The rest sounds good, though.
Smoked Turkey Breakfast Sandwich - Thick-sliced Smoked Turkey Breast, Melted Swiss Cheese, and Scrambled Eggs on Grilled Sourdough. This was the surprising winner.
Good to know. I'll pick that one, then. :)
We then went on Star Tours to see all the new scenes they have added.
I need to go on this again. I normally skip it. But... new scenes... I guess I should.
I think we were trying to some sort off trigger happy pose but not sure if it came through, LOL.
Such a cool shot. :thumbsup2
Even better the 2nd time because you are less anxious and are more relaxed to enjoy more of the nuances of the ride.
Ah! I'll keep that in mind. :)
This video below shows the coolest entrance into a ride ever!
Don't watch if you are avoiding spoilers!
Didn't watch.
We ran into @ariane37 and @Jenny Sanders on the way out!
Nice! Another little DISmeet. :)
When we passed by UK, I noticed this silhouette of Peter Pan on the side of one of the buildings. I had never noticed it before but I realized it was only there for Festival of the Arts! So fun!
I was going to say I never noticed it either... and now I know why.
For our lunch we were trying the brand new limited brunch option at...Le Cellier!
Ah! Just read @franandaj 's report on that.
67 dollars is a little steep for a brunch that is not AYCE
Worth it?
Steve and I got the Bloody Caesars and Chunkydust got a mimosa. The Bloody Caesar is just a Bloody Mary made with clamato juice instead of tomato. So it has the added flavor right in the juice. It was very savory and flavorful and I really enjoyed this drink!
::yes:: Glad you liked this quintessential Canadian drink.
I don't actually think it tastes like clams or seafood at all.
No it doesn't.
Anymore than V8 tastes like a carrot.
Chunkydust and myself ordered the Avocado Toast as a first course. It was the prettiest presentation of the toast!
That is pretty, even thought it wouldn't be something I'd order.
So the lobster was very nice, but the grits very salty.
Shame.
Salt seems to be a thing here, as Steve had gotten the Montreal-spiced corned beef hash. It was topped with two poached eggs. Frankly he could only eat the eggs as the dish was really salty! It was like someone had accidentally salted the dish twice.
I'm glad he got something else and didn't try to force it down.
Overall, brunch was just ok food-wise.
So... worth it? Or not? Sounding more like "not".
After our brunch we chilled for a bit and hopped on to Frozen Ever After via FP. Crazy wait times that day!
Whoa. That's like when it opened.

The 3 of us instead went over to Slinky Dog for what was seriously, the most amazing ride on a coaster I've ever had. Look at that amazing sky!!!
Wow! Incredible. :cloud9:

Am I right?
::yes::

Granted, it was only the 2nd day of service for this brunch so they are learning. But I figure the food should have been perfected before, no?
I completely agree, especially a place like Le Cellier. I made a quick and somewhat unexpected trip in January that missed yours by just a few days. I'd made an ADR for this brunch and ended up cancelling it and kinda regretting it. Your review made me feel slightly better about that decision ;)

Coming up...we made a last minute decision to do 4 parks in one day! Do we make it?!?
Ooooh, I hope so! I love 4 parks in one day days! So glad you got on RotR TWICE!!!

That sky on Slinky Dog was amazing! I love when you can stop and appreciate a moment like that.

That's great you were able to get a second ride on Rise of the Resistance. You've got to feel for the people that are there at the crack of dawn and can't get a boarding pass.

That's too bad the brunch at LeCellier was a bit disappointing. I'm also surprised there wasn't a steak dish on the menu.

This time we got boarding group 43...actually Chunkydust got it. My phone and Steve's phone didn't quite make it through. Andi however got some insane BG, what was it like, 8? LOL so they were pretty much in the first set of groups called!

Yay! That's great you were all sucessful agin that morning with getting a boarding group for RoTR!

That view is just breathtaking. Wow. Yeah I agree I think it would be totally worth it to wake up super early in order ot see that amazing sight!
Your day already sounds so incredible, and you were just getting to lunch time!

Love this!
Thanks for your indepth and honest review of the brunch. The menu is sounds nice, but it does seem like they should add a few more main dishes to make it feel more compelte. Sorry to hear the food wasn't so great.
Coming up...we made a last minute decision to do 4 parks in one day! Do we make it?!?
Wow your day already sounds perfect to me and now this! Can't wait to hear your other 4-parks-1-day adventures!!!

That sunrise was stunning!! What an amazing way to see it, on Slinky!!
And you got to ride RotR before lunch!! Yes!!!

Oh my....the menu looks good but sounds like your food was just so-so (I HATE oversalted food, bleck). At $67pp I would expect perfection for brunch lol (esp when you can compare it to something like Palo brunch at $40pp). Oh well, live and learn eh!

4 parks in 1 day.....:poop::magnify: I'm going to predict YES!

We decided to get there a little earlier and this was the sight we were dealing with.
Honestly it was worse that yesterday's crowds!:

❤❤❤

67 dollars is a little steep for a brunch that is not AYCE, but we are always up for trying something new so I made ADRs immediately when this brunch was announced last year.
For what you get the price seems fairly reasonable. Except of course chunkylush would like unlimited bloody marys

So the lobster was very nice, but the grits very salty. I wish it would have been more balanced as it would have been a really good dish.
Too bad it was salty. Seems like a new and interesting take on shrimp and grits

Overall, brunch was just ok food-wise. Service was good and the place was relatively uncrowded. It was honestly more crowded outside so it was a nice relaxing time. I would only do this brunch again it if they change up the menu.
Sounds like they had some of the right idea just couldn't quite execute. Perhaps on day 2 they were still working out some of their salty kinks. We've never actually been to Le Cellier, but the idea of brunch is more intriguing than their dinner options. If that sticks around may have to give it a whirl.
