Spending this day canceling things. I've been putting it off but there is no point to any further. We were to be on the May 30 Magic. Got our luggage tags yesterday!

Our flight has been cancelled by Norwegian (FLL to BCN) but I am nervous about hitting the cancel/refund button because of this phrase on their cancel form:

"I understand that by requesting a refund, the selected flights will be cancelled. Norwegian assesses your claim and provide a refund if the criteria is met."

I have the Low Fare tickets. They are pushing the 20% bonus if you let them hold your money. I have read some articles/editorials questioning the potential of Norwegian surviving this. I feel I need to get my money back, rather than the potential of the company not existing in 6 months.

Any advice?

I think you answered your own question.

"I feel I need to get my money back, rather than the potential of the company not existing in 6 months. "

Norwegian was in financial trouble before COVID-19. The current situation just amplifies it exponentially.

If THEY cancelled your flight, you are owed a full refund under US law. If YOU cancel then their own refund policy kicks in. Personally I’d call them (and I’m a big avoid talking to humans when possible) just to be clear that you are “requesting a refund on the flight Norwegian cancelled”. If the button wasnt “cancel/refund” I wouldn’t.

I think if you look at any airline, they are putting the same wording in their "refund" policies. I had to call United when they finally cancelled our flights because the "receipt" attached was just our base airfare, it didn't include the charge to upgrade our seats. I wanted to be sure all was being refunded. The person I worked with was great and said everything was put through for a refund and I should have the money back in 7-14 days. We had a nice little chat and then before she ended the call, she had the same caveat about it being reviewed so it seems that's their scripted disclaimer they have to say.

I took screen shots of what I was given for schedule changes and cancellations so I had proof they cancelled and I was due a refund. After you cancel, you'll just have a blank PNR so take screen shots first then put in for your refund.

That's a standard disclaimer to scare you into not requesting a refund. If they cancelled the flight they should refund. Maybe read their website to confirm. Many airlines are hiding their refund policy so you may have to dig a little. I've heard the same about Norwegian. I know they were having problems before this. I'd take the refund instead of hoping you can use them later.

Will you keep us posted? We also have Norwegian flight, but they have not been cancelled yet. We were scheduled to leave on June 3rd to Barcelona and the 15th from Rome...We are considering rebooking our cruise for next year, but I'm not sure Norwegian will be able to hang on that long...

Get the refund, I'am avoiding them for at least half a year now because I expect they'll go bust soon

Similar situation and asked them about it. It’s just the wording, don’t worry. They just didn’t update the system. Check the box and you’ll be added to the cash refund list. Understand it is currently taking 6 to 8 weeks.
However, they have an emergency meeting May 5 and there’s a good chance the company will be formally bankrupt then. Under no circumstances accept a cash point refund. If they are bankrupt you’ll be able to get the refund from your bank. Earlier this week they sent the pilot and crew company into bankruptcy.

We had flex/refundable tickets for a June trip to Rome. I got them refunded 3 weeks ago. Norwegian was on the brink before all this, so the only way they’ll survive going forward is with massive state bailouts or they will restructure into something much smaller. Too risky for us. It took them 8 days to refund our fares. After 5 days I disputed the charge with my credit card in case they went BK and froze refunds.

I would try to get your money back. As you already stated, their financial situation is shaky to say the least and have already had a few of it's subsidiaries file bankruptcy (they are a flag of convenience carrier).

Norway adjusted debt laws to make it easier for companies to avoid bankruptcy. We might keep our flights after all.

We had premium flex...and we got our money back a few weeks ago. We have friends with regular, non-refundable tickets. Their only option is to hope for bankruptcy or flight cancelation before we have to fly in late June.

Here's my take on Norwegian. They are in dire straights right now. About a month ago, they had three weeks of cash left. They've purportedly made it stretch (due to a partial loan from the Norwegian gov). However, they need to restructure their dept considerably if they want any more loans - and they will need them.

So about a 1-2 weeks ago they hatched a dept to equity conversion plan to offer creditors and lessors Norwegian stock if they would wipe the debt off the books. I dont see how this idea doesn't crash and burn....airline lessors won't *give* Norwegian their planes in exchange for stock. They'll just repo them....so it's really just the creditors....and if Norwegian is headed for bankruptcy, why would they take stock. Stockholders are the LAST to get paid in a bankruptcy. Creditors get first picks at the carcass. Apparently, this debt-equity scheme is going to be voted on April 30th. I would at least wait until then to see if Norwegian can convince enough fools to bite at this crazy deal. If they can't get enough people to agree to it. They're going to be bankrupt by late May, or earlier.

Norwegian's accountants are likely telling management to *not* cancel any flights at all to avoid processing refunds...but I don't see any way how they fly those cross-atlantic flights....it's a bluff. Wait them out and you'll get your money back through either a refund when they cancel or a travel insurance claim when they go bankrupt.

Aeromexico cancelled our flights for Feb 9th and will NOT process a refund. As of today, they best they will do is issue air credit through Feb 28th, 2021. That’s it.

Thanks for all your replies. I did call the help line. I waited around 45 minutes to speak with someone who told me to do the form online that I had an issue with. She said because the flight was canceled by Norwegian I would get a refund. I went ahead and filled out the form and clicked the box I had an issue with. The claim is being reviewed. Hopefully, I'll see it back on my card.

Rest easy that you'll be able to get your money back no matter what. Even IF Norwegian refuses to give you a refund (which I doubt would happen), you can dispute the charge with your credit card company and they'll credit the funds back to your account. You'll be alright. :)

I hope we can too.
We had a flight canceled by Alitalia almost a month ago, have not seen a dime of a refund yet.
Tried calling Tap Airlines yesterday, they disconnected me 5 times, I was very frustrated to say the least.
Called another number that was just for miles, they answered immediately =, but of course they couldn't help me because I paid with a credit card.
I sent an email after almost 2 hours of trying.
Tap supposedly is giving a 2 yr voucher back, I'm not going to hold my breath though.

This has made me realize, buying the cancel anytime insurance may be worth it.

Remember that, in accordance with US Dept. of Transportation regulations, ANY airline operating a flight to or from the United States is required to issue a full refund for a cancelled flight. It doesn't matter if it's a US or foreign airline. Don't settle for a flight voucher if you'd prefer a refund, from TAP or any other airline.

Also, don't be scared to call your credit card company to initiate a dispute. It's one of the benefits that you get from using their card. Feel free to check this out for a decent guide to refunds in the age of coronavirus: https://thepointsguy.com/guide/refund-for-canceled-flight/

Good luck!

Also, on a separate note, check into your credit card's benefits to see if it offers trip insurance. We're frequent travelers (for business and family) so we got a high annual fee travel credit card. It's pricey but we more than make up for it with our annual perks. One of which is an excellent travel insurance policy. It's not "cancel anytime" but the coverage is better than the DCL trip insurance, and it comes free with any trip that I pay for with my card.

You answered your own question. Get your money back ASAP. The 20% is a joke in your case. Will they even fly what you want to fly, if they even fly in the near future? IF they survive - their flight plan will be drastically reduced anyways for years.

Just wanted to update. Refund showed up on credit card yesterday. Hotel and tours in Barcelona canceled and refunded without me even emailing. Tours in Capri and Pompeii refunded promptly (really, really bummed about both of these).

Now I just have The Roman Guy to deal with.
