Should Doctors Have Their Student Loans Cleared?

No, the loan should not be forgiven but interest should be lowered.

One idea is to strike March, April, and May out of the calendar in the sense that no interest would accue, be computed, be capitalized, or be payable for that time period. The intent is to ease the burden on being unemployed for those months. The year 2020 would have nine interest bearing months so interest for that calendar year would be 3/4 of the interest paid the preceding year all other things and facts such as interest rate and amount owing being the same.

Another idea is to give a triple tax free* bonus, perhaps in monthly increments, to graduates who take jobs in hazardous areas or hazardous occupations. The intent is to to give the equivalent of forgiving part of the student loan, but only to qualifying graduates (i.e. who took the hazardous job). There is evidence that this may not work well because some people with quite high salaries have been declining to go back to work for fear of getting one of the more severe cases of the coronavirus..

* Not subject to federal, state, or local income tax.

Anybody who thinks they should get thousands of dollars in loans paid off by the rest of us because some of them had to work harder for a little while is crazy. This whole, I'm owed more because I did my job thing, not just by the medical community but by basically everyone is ridiculous. You pick your own job. Just because something happens and you have to work a little harder doesn't mean that the rest of the country owes you extra money. If you're employer wants to give it to you then that's fine but other than that it's just too bad. The only things that happen when the free market economy is meddled with are bad things.

Loans don't just vanish. Someone has to pay them.

A little harder?! Like soldiers fighting in wars work a little harder?! I haven't seen a single healthcare worker think their loans should be forgiven, but hopefully they will be given free counseling. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/29/nyregion/coronavirus-nyc-hospitals.html

FYI, US federal loans owned by the Dept of Ed are already having their interest set to zero and no payments due for six months, from March 13, 2020, through Sept. 30, 2020. See: https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/coronavirus

Yeah, a little harder. How long has this really been going on? 3 months maybe a little longer? NYC where it was the worst is already well over the peak and getting back to a more normal pace. You really want to compare that to soldiers being sent off to the other side of the planet to fight in a war? Lol

The vast majority in the medical profession across the country have either been only mildly affected or they've been basically put out of work because their job doesn't deal with the possible influx of patients that never materialized and they've been essentially deemed non-essential.

Honestly, no one needs to have their loans forgiven because of hazards of the job. Everyone signs up for it knowing the risks. Doctors, nurses, military, police.

Nope. IMHO...what I’d like to see are govt loan rates reduced because 7-8 percent and a 4 percent distribution fee ( by the university) is Highway robbery!
a little hard to take when car/house loans are so cheap but investing in yourself to ultimately give back to society is so ridiculously high!
maybe the govt should go after all the people that Never paid back their money too. Yup, I’m for that too.
