Folks who live in their vans - my latest publication :-).

Interesting article. This type of living arrangement is fascinating but certainly not my cup of tea. Thanks as always for posting @WonkaKid.

As an aside it now makes sense regarding how good your photography is and how articulate your writing is, seeing as you are a journalist.

Fascinating. I was shocked when I realised that they really are vans and not mobile homes. I am not sure that I could or would want to live like that but I admire people who have that sense of adventure. Visiting all the National Parks sounds like an amazing adventure. Thank you for sharing.

This is interesting, I consider myself fairly simple in my wants, but I think the deal breaker for me would be not having my own bathroom. I'd probably move into a tiny house in the country before I would consider van life, but kudos to these individuals for making it work! I admire that.

I know a couple people who live in vans. One is a surfer, so that makes sense to me. He recently left the area due to shelter in place taking away all the normalities of his day (lack of place to buy cup of coffee, public restrooms closed, gym closed, etc.).

You would be surprised by the number of these van conversions that do have actual working toilets and even showers. As I had said in my above post I do find this type of life style very interesting, wouldn't do it myself but interesting non the less. If you search on youtube you can find some very interesting Vlogs about building/living like this if you are further curious on the subject.

That's very kind of you to say. But truth be told, I didn't take any of the pics. The friends that I interviewed sent them to me. They were all far-flung at the time and taking them myself wouldn't have been practical.

As another aside, my friend Tamale featured in the article recently certified as a skydiver. I've jumped twice before (pic below). When I last saw her in the Phoenix area, she urged me to jump with her but I declined... to my shame. Usually I'm all about seizing opportunities. But I'd done it twice before and didn't want to drop $250 then and there... although I' aware that's more or less an excuse :-).

There was a time in my life when this would have been a challenge I'd accept. But these friends are all younger than me and this is their perfect time for just such an adventure. Personally, I'm now more about comfort and stability :-). Glad they're doing it, though. Back in the day, I had friends in bands that went on the road -- one even toured Europe. That was when we were in our early/mid 20s. That was the time to hit the road. I used to joke that you know you're getting older when you have fewer and fewer friends in bands ;-).

Awesome article! My husband is a van-enthusiast. But he likes 1970's vans. He has a bed in the back and he and his buddies (they have a van club) go on camping trips in their vans. :-)

I wondered about these people.... we have lots of surfers who live in Vans and RVs down in Cardiff because they have a camping lot. I wondered where they all went when the government shut down the lots.
