Are You...

For those of you who choose not to wear a mask when out & about (like in a store, etc.), what’s your reason for not wearing a mask? Do you feel that your risk of spreading the virus is low or non-existant? Or are you trying to make some sort of “statement”, whatever that might be?
I’m really just curious, that’s all. No judging here. Thank you!
I just don’t want to wear one I guess. Where I live it’s not mandatory anywhere and most people are not wearing them. I work in a grocery store and none of the employees are wearing them and maybe 25% of customers do but probably a little less. I’m not really worried about the virus I guess, and I don’t like the look of them. I can’t imagine I’d like the feel of wearing one but I haven’t put one on to know. I haven’t seen anyone wearing one outside. Really I’m just not scared enough of this virus to wear a mask.

I live in FL an hour from Disney
we "opened up" about 2 weeks ago. my kids went to their dad’s for a couple of months so I was struggling being alone. I started going to my mom and brother’s houses again but we don’t hug and we sit 6 feet apart and watch a movie or eat a meal. I have gone shopping with a mask. I still do not want to dine out, meet up with friends or do leisure activities indoors. I have no plans to go to Disney even though I’m an AP. 100,000 lives lost is A LOT OF people. I’d like to see where the numbers go.

Just this week I did go inside a grocery store for the first time since mid March. Everyone had a mask on. I also had a doctors appointment 10 days ago. At at their office, you were asked to wait in your car when you arrived and call the receptionist. One of the nurses, came out and escorted me directly to one of the treatment rooms. After the appointment was over, I was escorted back outside again. They then called me to take payment information over the phone. I’ll admit that I was nervous to go, but my doctors office has taken great precautions,And he’s only had one positive case in a patient and that was back in late March.

Yesterday, I went to the next town over to a bakery we really enjoy because of their pies. I was also hoping to support a local business. I went in wearing my mask, and the person behind the counter, who is a regular employee but not the owner asked me if I was feeling well. I said that I was and was about to order the pies. He then said, if you’re not sick there’s no reason to wear that dumb mask. So, I left without ordering any pies, and do not anticipate returning. It’s a shame, but if that was the attitude towards one customer, I’m not sure that I can trust them to really be safe.

I'm happy all the stores in my area require their employees to wear a mask. Consider how many persons ONE cashier encounters in one day working, Those customers do not wear masks. Where have they been, who have they been in contact with. I can handle wearing a mask, it's the thought of inserting a tube down my throat that's uncomfortable to me.

GOOD for you!!! You'll find another business to buy your pies!

I literally can't breathe with them on, so I don't wear them. (But honestly, the longer this goes on, and the more people shame others for "being selfish" for not wearing a mask, it's turned a bit more into me just being ornery because I am sick and tired of the mentality that EVERYONE who goes out without a mask is just "entitled" and "self centered" and "inconsiderate". So I guess it's a statement now! Whoops.)

We are about 75% back to “normal” life around here. Our family is doing everything that is allowed. We are not wearing mask. There is very little mask wearing here. In the grocery stores, maybe 30% are wearing a mask. I’ve been going to the gym since it opened back up 2 weeks ago. We’ve gone out to eat in restaurants several times. Movie theaters are still not opened and there are some restrictions at places like the DMV and Dr offices that you wait in your car until they text you for your appointment. Those places do require a mask, so we all keep one in our car for those situations where they are mandatory.

I have not been worried about the virus since the death rate has dropped so low and it appears to mostly affect people in very specific high risk groups. Our family has been working since the beginning and we were never locked down. My 16 year old works 40+ hours stocking grocery shelves at Walmart. I figure if he’s been out doing that with no mask for over 2 months and none of us have gotten sick yet I’m not too worried personally. Obviously those who fall into any of the high risk groups need to be cautious. But for the rest of us I figure we should go out and live our lives and keep the economy going for everyone else who can’t.

As far as why we don’t wear mask as a previous poster ask...the reason is because I do not want wearing mask to become the “new normal”. I do not want to perpetuate the image that wearing them looks “right” or “normal”. I want to perpetuate the image that we are perfectly safe with no mask and I want mask free to look “normal”. I understand people are scared right now. I feel like fear often times causes people to look for ways to alleviate their fear that isn’t based so much on facts but rather on what makes them “feel” safe. That is what I believe mask are doing, making people feel safe, not actually making them safe. I don’t want mask to become our new societal norm.

I am so glad our grocery stores care enough to require employees to wear masks.

I'd make sure everyone I knew was told about that experience and the name of the business. (Friends, family, Facebook, twitter, etc).

We’re in “full phase I” here in Florida. I guess I’m moderately cautious. I’d consider myself cautious but with the amount of people who only go out for groceries once every two weeks and that’s it then I don’t look so cautious.

I’ve been going out nearly everyday to take my dog to daycare. With nearly contactless pickup and now pickup inside if you wear a mask (if not they’ll come to the parking lot) it seemed like a good trade off. The very low risk to my physical health was worth it to save a very large impact to my mental health to keep an extremely social dog at home driving us all mad.

I’ve always hated grocery stores so even prior to this I did mostly delivery. I’ve always done take-out quite a bit as I hate to cook and it just requires having so much food in the house.

Salons opened up a couple weeks ago. I have a haircut set for the middle of June (it was the first appointment I could get as I’m a new client because my stylist moved before all this). The salon has a lot of protocols and I really don’t want to mangle my hair on my own.

I’ve been wanting to change my color as the grays that started in my teens are finally enough that I don’t want to deal and want to full on rock it. However to correct my current color and then get that silver balayage look will likely take 4-6 hours on the amount of hair I have. I’m not comfortable sitting in a salon for that long.

My nail place just opened (sort of) last week. If I hadn’t completely mangled my toe a couple days before I’d have been in for a pedi already. But since I cut my toe pretty bad I need to wait a bit.

I’m not ready to dine with anybody I didn’t shelter in place with so I’m not in a rush to go back to dine-in.

I am beyond ready. We chose not to wear mask. If a mask is required, we just skip it. Where I live, it is 75% non mask and 25% wearing mask. The larger town down the hill is about 50/50. I haven't gone shopping at the larger towns. I have had people over and I have also gone to friend's homes. I am looking forward to our library finally opening and mask not being required in other places.

This describes me and my wife as well.

Well stated.

Im sorry you had such a bad experience. In our area you are looked upon funny if you’re NOT wearing a mask. 90% are wearing in public places.

I'm out and about as little as possible. I'm listening to the actual experts and engaging only in low risk activities, and then only as necessary. I wear a mask. I'm under NO illusion that it's keeping me safe. That's not why I wear it. I wear it as a show of respect to OTHER people...to "you" (general you). I'm not "living in fear." If "you" don't wear a mask, it speaks volumes about what you think of other people. I do not get, at all, the refusal to follow the simple safety guidelines suggested by actual experts.

My county is going into "Yellow Phase" in about 2 weeks, where people can start gathering in groups of 10 or less, stores start to open, etc. I plan on continuing to stay home as much as possible. My office is work-from-home until at least June 30th anyway

I wear a mask as required at my place of employment. And when I’m out in public. I hate it. I get “mask mouth”. Chapped lips, dry skin. So I’m not overly thrilled with wearing one. I get why people don’t want to wear them. But I don’t mask shame.

A question for those who say they won't go out - do you work? Or more specifically, do you work away from home? I've spent the last three weeks up close and personal with kids at work. Not safe for a 1 -2 year old to wear a mask even if they would, so I get coughed on, sneezed on, slobbered on. Going out to a restaurant doesn't seem like a risk after that, but I might feel differently if I had the option of working from home.

Unfortunately my lung disease makes me way overly cautious but my mental state would love to just go sail away! :boat:

I did go to the outdoor garden spot at Meijer with DH yesterday to buy some flowers. I felt like I was an escapee from prison!
Or go check out a Great Lakes freighter. :boat:

Good for you.! You certainly did the right thing, had the right thoughts on overall safety. That was unbelievable.

Here in Illinois, we are supposed to be going to stage 3 next week. And Chicago is a bit slower. Stages, from state to state, county to county, are somewhat meaningless as they vary so much from one state/county. What is stage 3 in Illinois may be totally different that stage 3 in some other state. I have no problems with however slow they want to go.

I have been in 2 stores since march, Costco once, (after the early mad rush time) and a large grocery, during senior hour at 6 AM. I regularly do Walmart in-car grocery pickup (can't beat that system, I love it) and do drive-through and curbside from restaurants. Online church works fine. I do have a haircut appointment for June 9th (haven't had a haircut sine Feb 5th. I anticipate I will push it off for another month.

After watching the news shows yesterday, I'm holding my breath for what we might see in 2 weeks or so.
