Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

Regarding masks and heat...get yourself some surgical masks or the knock off "KN95" masks from China. They are MUCH easier to tolerate, especially in the heat.

I took my kids to Target the other day as a test of wearing masks in public (they are both autistic). One kid did fine. The other had a LOT of sensory problems (itching, hot, sweaty face). We were using homemade cloth masks. It resulted in a meltdown for one son. A bad one, but he kept it together until we got to the car. I felt awful as he was walking through Target with tears in his eyes.

I had purchased surgical masks and KN95 masks on ebay at the start of the quarantine. Yesterday, I had my son try them. The KN95 mask was comfortable for him! He wore it in the house for an hour to get used to it and said it was "nice and cool." We will trial it outdoors on a warm day soon, but I'm hopeful.

I think I'll grab some more of those and we will use those for him for going out from now on. And I'll definitely use those in the parks rather than cloth masks.
https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/4993682/Kata-3-Ply-Pleated-Face-Mask/I found these at Office Depot. They are adult sized, not sure how they would fit on a child. I have a smaller face and they fit me pretty well. I walked around with these outside and it wasn't bad at all.

I have so many thoughts:
Part of me thinks DL could open before WDW since like @DLgal mentioned it's a simpler operation. Plus DL tends to heavily rely on local guests. Whether that is with passholders or with day guests from the surrounding area (think Socal resident tickets). WDW relies on out of town guests.

The other part of me thinks DL will open after WDW since California is more cautious about reopening.

Based on the 'lag period' between FLA 'reopening', WDW submitting plans, and then the actual opening dates I'd say that DLR will reopen about 45 days AFTER Orange Co (CA) gets 'cleared' to enter stage 3. So I don't think DL will be open until mid-July at the earliest.

I'm so disappointed. It will likely stay closed through the summer and open right at the time we all go back to school.
Maybe Universal Hollywood or other parks will open this summer so we can still go and have some summer fun. We are all going so stir crazy right now.

I want to hold out hope that you might be right about DL opening before WDW, but my gut says "no way." WDW does have complications because people have to travel there and they issues with transportation within the property and how to handle all the people staying on property with social distancing.
This is less of a problem for Disneyland since the property is so compact and a lot of their visitors are local. It will be interesting to see what happens here.

It's basically just up to Disney when they want to reopen Disneyland at this point. Phase 3 in California could be as soon as the beginning of June or July at the latest unless there is a big spike in cases that spooks Newsom and other governmental leaders. So as others have pointed out, it will be much easier to get the DLR up and running vs WDW. I'm actually thinking Disney is trying to open both resorts up at the same time. It's a little over 6 weeks from the July 11th opening date for WDW. We saw what Universal Orlando did with there reopening plans. They submitted their plans for reopening last week and will reopen next week on June 5th. There's no reason Disneyland could not use a similar time table to go from announcement to reopening in a span of 2 weeks.

I too am surprised at the re-opening dates. I get they need time to put up the signage, install sanitizer stations, and do training but it still feels a long way out. I wonder if it has something to do with getting a reservation system in place??

I have a nagging suspicion that returning of CMs is related to the ability of bringing back workers for reasons of child care and the enhanced UI that is likely paying a lot of CMs more than if they return to work.

So I think kids going back to school might be by design, though summer programs are opening up as well.

This is my thought process right now, DLR is more similar to SDL and SDL gave 6 days notice to reopen (I can't remember when they were cleared to do so, though).

I agree that surgical masks are much more comfortable than other more restrictive masks. The only issue I have when I wear them for long periods of time are my ears, but the "ear savers" are easy to 3D print (or purchase online) and work well.

We will be field testing mask wearing in the heat (it's 90s/100s in the bay area right now) and see how feasible it is. Otherwise, it's going to be a lot of water and snack breaks that require the removal of the mask.

Side note: at this point, I have zero faith that masks will be worn consistently by everyone in the park except possibly in ride queues (which I don't even know what that will look like).

You bring up a really good point and one that I had also thought about. At WDW, I think they do have a lot of workers that have moved from out of the area to work there, sometimes temporarily. I think there are more locals working at DL. Trying to get up the CMs for all of the various parts of running the parks may be really difficult, and probably more difficult at WDW than at DL. Think of all the areas where workers are needed. It's not just the people selling food and running rides.

You also have to consider supply chains. The supply chains in order to get food ingredients, paper products, and merch just to name a few have also been interrupted. They may have to find new sources for some of the things they need.

Also, I just read in an article from the AP that WDW is going to be doing soft openings prior to July 11th. I have no idea if that will also be done here. Just some food for thought.

One minute I’m sure I’ll try to go re-opening day if I can get in... the next, I’m convinced that’s dumb. Idk.

I hear ya. I’m all over the place. The heart wants Disney but the brain wants me to slow down and be careful. I keep changing our trip from October to December to 2021 based on my mood haha.

On the WDW front, DVC is reopening their properties starting June 22nd, three weeks before the parks open.

Don't know how I'd feel about that, tbh. I wonder if that will happen at DLR (VGC + hotels).
