US Passports Department Not Working

Yeah, the Post Office will do your appointment and do their part - confirming you have ID that matches what you're sending the State Department - @Anna Chassereau but once it gets mailed, it's just going to sit in their incoming mail until the office staff is back to work. šŸ˜•
Yes I realize that just want to go ahead and get it turned in so when they do resume it will be waiting and ā€œin lineā€ so to speak behind all the other applications that were sent in before me

I'm not worried about the Bahamas, I'm concerned about getting back to the US.
as a US citizen your passport can be expired and they will let you in.. no panic. you might get yelled at whatever..
now if an airline or cruiseline will let you board is another issue.

We are waiting on our daughters' passports. Our appointment was February 27. It has been sitting in processing since March 3.

Thankfully we aren't going on our cruise until next year now... but I would like our paperwork back.

We had an appointment for our infant son on March 18, the day before processing slowed down and they stopped doing expedited passports. It's still processing. Also glad we're not going to Alaska this summer anymore but I'm dying to see his baby passport. :D

The hilarious part is a few years later when you are still using the baby passport and have a preschooler. We got our baby's passport at 4 months old, and he still has it now at 4 years old!

This is also one reason that I got 2 official copies of my daughter's birth certificate when she was born. There's been enough times I had to hand off my only one that I spent the $12 for an extra while I was at it. It was super easy at that point.
I also sprung for the extra copy when DD was born. Unfortunately, coming home from renewing her passport last year, I set the paperwork down on the coffee table to go back in the safe. That night our dog, who is really weird, took the paper and ate it! So now Iā€™m down to one copy. Once offices open again, Iā€™ll have to figure out how to get a second copy.

Most states have online ordering for birth certificates directly through their Office of Vital Records or equivalent (different states have different names for the particular offices).

Yes, I would have two copies of the birth certificate. Never know when you'll need one. If I thought I might need a passport, I would send off the application now and get another birth certificate in the meantime.

Also, for the person whose wife's driver's license is in the mail, depending on your state you may be able to get a "State ID" card. It's like a driver's license but without the eligibility to drive. Of course, that would involve going to a DMV that is likely also closed.

We got our dd passport when she was 3. She has changed so much we decided to get it redone before expiration so we submitted a renewal on March 18, right before everything hit. Its still sitting in processing. So, I would think they're going to have a huge backlog when things start processing normally. Our cruise date is October. I hope we sail, and I hope we get it prior to that, but if not we'll use her birth certificate for our closed loop.

Kind of weird that the federal government is ripping states for not reopening and yet essential parts of the federal government remain closed,
I can answer that: even states like mine with re opening require workplaces to limit staff, stagger staff schedules, and telework when possible. Passport processing centers require a lot of employees and staff to be around each other working. They ARE in the office working (some staff are) they are only dealing with passports and issues that are life or death, family funerals, and were updating passports to get Americans abroad home.

ALSO-------the state department employees do not do most of the acceptance process. County/city courts, public libraries, and post offices serve as the bulk of the passport acceptance agents. You have to do passports in person, in a private room/area, passing papers back and forth with an acceptance agent. Most agencies have people in lines or in waiting areas for a passport. Right now that is really hard with covid. I am a passport acceptance agent, we are getting ready to gear up here soon, we are installing plexiglass and going to have to limit how many come in for passports right now.

Trust me, we agents want this to get going.

Thank you for providing some current insight as to what is really happening.

I am hopeful that they start processing the backlog soon. Our check was cashed the first week in March. We may have been close to being processing when everything shut down, but right now, those documents are just sitting in a stack somewhere.

our check was cashed in April, so we are in the same stack.

My boyfriend applied for his first passport back in the end of February. Itā€™s still pending. He still has no passport or birth certificate back yet. Our cruise, if we still go, is November.

You might think about getting another copy of his birth certificate.

We got our dd passport when she was 3. She has changed so much we decided to get it redone before expiration

Random data point, both our kids had passports at ~1 month of age, and used them up to age 5 and their expiration without issue. Needless to say they looked different towards the end... Our 5 year old's renewal is also in the processing limbo atm.

the status has changed for mine (sent beginning of March) from the generic "we received it and are processing" to "we got no clue when we'll get to it" :(

So, I sent mine in to be renewed in March, right before everything shut down for COVID, and it has said "received and processing" until this morning, when I decided to check it because on a couple of my other travel sites I saw that people were starting to receive their passports. Now mine says status is not found. Based on the description, I think it just means they can't tell me what stage my passport is at in renewal. Anyone else have this?
