Would you be comfortable taking a road trip during these covid times? The destination would be a state with bad covid numbers (don't have exact destination yet, but would be one of a handful of states with lots of cases). I would feel a little safer because we would not be flying. But, we would have to stay in a hotel and eat take out. We would probably bring our own breakfast foods so only lunch and dinner for take out. The hotel does not bother me too much because I could bring wipes and lysol and most hotels are not doing maid service so we would be the only ones in the room.

Most of the activities would be outdoor type stuff like beaches, hiking, sight seeing etc. so no museums or indoor stuff. I am tossed. Would you be comfortable doing this as a family?

I would be.

We drove from to Florida in June to go to Universal from a state that has had mandated masks since March, every state we drove thru had no rules. So you’ll need to watch for that at rest stops and gas stations. We just wore our masks, minded our business, and stayed away from people. We got fastfood which we were comfortable with bc the chains themselves had rules for employees to wear masks and such and we ate in the car.

No complaints about our hotel, except that at the time masks were not mandated in Orange Co so no staff at our Disney Springs area hotel had masks on. But we felt the room was safe and clean, even the lobby and pool.

I would not feel comfortable in elevators.
We stayed at a Homewood Suites in New Braunfels, TX in early May. They had signs up for the elevators limiting to four at a time. All the guests that we happened to need the elevator either obeyed the request or waited for the next one.

Only in my RV. That way it's, basically, like distancing at home, since you're not in hotels, restaurants, etc. Of course, you'd still need to hit up a grocery store here and there.

I go to Glacier tomorrow. I’ll have a better gauge as to my comfort level tomorrow. I don’t think outdoor is any more safe than indoor. But it’s easier to socially distance outside.

The hotel we stayed at had signs up that stated “one family per elevator” and if you don’t want to touch the buttons yourself you can always get one of those button push things. Or just request a ground floor or do the stairs if everyone is able?

A few months ago, I might have said yes, but I'm not thrilled about these hot spots. We've had several employees spending time in a certain hot spot and they've come back (not flying either) and all getting infected. They don't even know how except for just having random encounters either picking up food or from somewhere in the hotel. I just think the hot spots are too hot at this point. The virus just has too much community spread right now.

Absolutely. We use precautions at home, work and play.

A state with bad numbers doesn’t mean every area has a high rate of infection.

Safer on a road trip in a state with good numbers. We would not fly at all at this time. Hotel deals should be easy to find.

We wanted to do one but have decided against it for now. Part of the reason is states case numbers are pretty much on the rise all over for the most part and each state is constantly updating and changing quarantine rules. We don’t want to have to deal with getting stuck somewhere or unable to stay somewhere because of that. If we do one, we would like it to be safe and as hassle free as possible. I just don’t think that is the case right now.

We are just finishing up a road trip From Illinois to Colorado and back. We spent 6 days traveling through South Dakota and Wyoming to get to a Colorado where we are leaving tomorrow for home after a week at a dude ranch. The trip out was pretty fine. We made sure to schedule all hotels in advance using trip advisor and booking.com to check out cleanliness ratings. I felt all the hotels were fine. All hotels had plastic in front of the front desk and some hotel people put on masks If they saw we were wearing them. all the rooms seemed fine. And if there were others waiting for an elevator we just stepped back and waited for another one.

We ordered in a few nights especially in South Dakota where there is no mask encouragement and we got dirty looks for wearing masks. We took a whole bag of napkins, plastic silverware and paper plates and cups to use in our rooms.

Wyoming was a little better. We found places outside for meals. And in Cody the staff all wore masks. We drove through Yellowstone and grand Teton parks. Very little traffic except at old faithful and lots of people wore masks.
Jackson Wyoming has a mask order. So it was fine everywhere. And so is Colorado.
the ranch we are at has the staff wear masks inside but most activities are outside and we just keep our distance while enjoying the company of New friends. And of course riding ahorse is a perfect activity for this summer.
We are supposed to go to DW in September to stay at a couple dvc resorts but no parks. I think we will cancel if the Florida numbers don’t change drAmatically soon

I thought Bathroom stops were fine too. We just wore masks everywhere and used tons of sanitizer.

Wow, that will be awesome. What does the trip look like, camping, lodges etc. do you have a long flight?

Yes and no.

Am I comfortable doing a road trip - yes. And we are. But we’re staying in our own state, have bathroom stops mapped out and are renting a house where we can remain isolated, much like we are here. We are bringing all of our own food and will not be doing take out. Our only chance of coming across other people, besides for bathroom breaks, would be the beach. But easy enough to social distance. And masks are required statewide.

I can’t say that I’d be comfortable with your plans though. Not right now anyway. What states would you be going through?

We had a DVC trip planned for this week. Driving from Pennsylvania to Vero Beach for 5 nights and then on to Hilton Head for 4 nights. We cancelled.

I probably would not have cancelled a Northeast or Midwest road trip. Probably not further west either but we’ve never road tripped that far.

Went to the Smokies in June. We rented a cabin that was very clean. We mostly did outside things in the park. But we walked through town, ate outside dining and we toured the aquarium.

We are going to Colorado in October, visiting a college with DS. We will drive the 19 hours because i won't get on a plane during this pandemic. However we have not booked lodging yet.
