Marathon Weekend 2021

SAFD: Technically nothing. I signed up for the Diva Virtual 5K and the Princess 10K - the first I'll do in December and the second I'll do on my sea day on the Celebrity Apex (fingers crossed that it is going to happen). So I'm doing run/walk plans for those.

Mad props to all y'all who are doing Half Marathons of greater distances virtually. NO WAY for me. Even 10K is pushing it for distance solo for me.

SAFD: I have the New Braunfels half marathon next month, and the Pumpkin Spice half marathon in Fort Worth the weekend after and both have said they are planning to go in person. With Chicago and WDW getting cancelled, I don't feel the same urgency to stay on the training plan but I'm doing some virtual team events that keep me motivated to run. I'm doing the MW and Princess weekend events virtually in January and the Dallas Marathon weekend got pushed back to the end of April and I'm doing the 10k/Half Marathon challenge. I may also do the LA Marathon in March, but they're doing deferrals/no refunds if they go virtual, so I'm waiting to register until I see some more certainty on their part that it will be in person.

This week’s Sundays are for Disney is a training check-in A lot has changed in the past few weeks, so tell us all what you’re training for and how that’s going. Need some motivation? We can help with that, too!

I had a half marathon today, so now that it's done (and a PR!) I'm not training for anything in particular. I'll definitely sign up for some half marathons in 2021 and focus on that distance, I'm also doing a run a faster 5k with my running group, and then I'm going to hopefully run my first marathon on 2022 in Disney!

SAFD: I have run three in-person races since the pandemic started. Although I live in the Chicago suburbs, the races have been in Indiana, Wisconsin, and Kentucky. I'm pretty cautious about the pandemic, but all three races were extremely well organized and two were relatively small (50, 100, and 700 runners). I also ran two virtual long distance multiple weeks runs this summer. I'm going to run another Silver Circle Sports event in Wisconsin on November 14, which is also limited to 100 runners at each distance.

I need to have a scheduled, upcoming race to keep me motivated, and to keep @DopeyBadger busy writing training plans for me.

I've run every day since last Christmas - my streak is around 290 to 300 days now. Well, not all my "runs" were full runs - I have lost a lot of motivation and this flu situation is a downer so some days were just walks just to keep my streak going. Earlier in the year I was hitting 9min paces for 10 milers - which was getting me closer to my pre-surgey paces, but then the flu situation hit and family health issues made things depressing. It hasn't gotten better since the races have been cancelled and now the worry is that runDisney may never return - God I hope I am wayyyyyy wrong! I will continue my running/walking - I think my sadness is transitioning to anger now at the situation, and I think anger at not running well at all, so maybe that will lead me to be more motivated. I am doing the virtual Dopey so I will have to improve soon.

I'll say one thing though after all of that complaining - so far I am healthy and hoping to avoid this flu at all costs and I hope the same for all of you! We can beat this.

SAFD: Yesterday I ran a live, in person half marathon. I had ran a marathon at the beginning of September (OYO SLC), and tacked on a few weeks from an old half plan for yesterday’s race. I have a couple races that I have opted to run as virtual (one half next weekend and then a full the weekend before Thanksgiving). I’m also still planning on running Goofy on it’s normal weekend. Usually I don’t have a mileage plan for a year, and just run what is on my training plan, but I noticed that I may actually be able to hit 2020 miles this year. I’m still trying to decide if I want to re-use one of my DopeyBadger plans for Goofy (that was the original plan) or use one of Stryd’s new plans based on power. Since I don’t have any more live races on my schedule at the moment, I might do this as an experiment.

SAFD: All my races have been cancelled, with nothing on the horizon (I'm not holding my breath for Star Wars in April, but am signed up for it). I've been using this time to increase my weekly mileage! I run about 40 miles per week, 5-6 total runs, one of which is an interval workout and the other a long run of 10+. It's been working well for me so far, and I'd love to get closer to 50 a week. My goals for 2020 were 2 marathons (dead goal), a 3:45 or less marathon (dead goal), and 2000 miles for the year. I've got 511 to go so I'm chasing that one!

That said, I'm giving myself rest when my body wants it. There's no need for a strict schedule right now so I'm taking more ad hoc days off for fun, family time, and catching up on sleep.

SAFD: Not as intense as most of the rest of you, but working on the 5k, mainly just trying to build up to walking that distance. not sure we'll have any real running involved, but the walks have been good for us. We've alternated longer walks with shorter walks, but have gradually ramped up, now consistently hitting 3.5-4k when walking and doing that in about an hour. I think this will really help us be better prepared for hitting the parks as well, haha.

SAFD: Not training for anything specific at the moment. Just trying to stay consistent which has always been a struggle for me. Keeping my long run to 5 or 6 miles each week. I've been using more of my short run time to just walk and enjoy the fall. It's so lovely to just enjoy nature and watch all the foliage changes each week. I find when I run everything is a blur at the end, but when I walk I really feel mentally refreshed from absorbing all the natural details. Fatigue from my anemia seems to be finally getting better and the trees will be bare in a few weeks, so then I will ramp up to all running again. Then I will hopefully complete the virtual summer series as a winter series. I'm thinking about signing up for the MCM next year as I realized it will be the 20th anniversary of my first marathon. That would lead me nicely into Dopey too.

I'm not training for anything at the moment. I'm thinking of signing up for two different half marathons next March. I need a new proof of time anyways. I'm in my 3rd week of Liift 4. Two different times I've made it to week 7 and then wasn't able to finish so I'm thinking 3rd times a charm. I am still planning on doing Wine and Dine virtual so I'm trying to run a few times a week but I don't have a lot of motivation to run either virtual fast. I did buy a new watch. It was really giving me issues this summer. Ran for the first time with the new one this morning and everything worked.

SAFD: Was training for Dopey, but then that got cancelled. I signed up for a virtual 10k and finished that. I did not get the same felling out of that as an in-person race. I am fighting with myself to keep up the Dopey training cycle and see if I can get through the training. Depending on the snow and temperature here, I will give Dopey a shot in January to check off a personal goal.

SAFD: Not training for anything in particular at the moment. I have a virtual 10k and a virtual 15k coming up. I am just trying to keep up 100 mile months through this year.
Hopefully 2021 improves and we get to do Star Wars. Other than that, the only thing planned is to try and do a one day Presidential Traverse in New Hampshire in July.

SAFD: Theoretically, I'm training to do a solo 50K in Jan. Unfortunately, I'm also dealing with a health issue causing bouts of severe joint pain - some days I feel great and am all-in on the 50K thing, and other days I think I'll never run more than a couple miles at a time again. It's exacerbated by the heat here in FL; the couple cooler days I've had felt sooo good, so I'm hopeful that when summer finally ends, my long runs will feel better. I've kind of left it all up in the air: I'll keep aiming for the 50K and trying to do my long runs, but if it gets too difficult, I'm willing to ditch it.

Good morning, runDisney all-stars!

This week’s Sundays are for Disney is a training check-in. A lot has changed in the past few weeks, so tell us all what you’re training for and how that’s going. Need some motivation? We can help with that, too!

I just did 17 miles yesterday and plan to run the NYC virtual later this month. The long run went really well. It helps that we’ve had great weather lately.

Have a safe and healthy week, everyone!

SAFD: I have a real life marathon on Nov. 8 that I am training for. It is very small and has a lot of safety precautions. Still, hoping it doesn't get canceled.

SAFD: Training has been tough lately with air quality and heat. I hate long runs on the treadmill. Anyway, on Sunday I’ll be running a virtual half. It is gonna be slow but it will get done. I have a 10k and 5k in November virtually. Then 2021 so far is just WDW Half and Princess Half. Training for those two should be better with the temps cooling soon!

SAFD: I’m tapering for the virtual MCM. Training has been great and I hate to waste it on a virtual but I’m running with my neighbor so fun it is! We are running it 10/15. This year has been a HM/mo. All virtual but dopey in Jan. I am signed up for space coast HM with my girls! Looking forward to a live race. It will count as my dec HM since it’s 11/29 and virtual W&D challenge is my nov Half.

Aaaaagh!
Knowing how hard it was to register this year (I didn’t get a bib) for the in person 1/2, I mulled the virtual marathon...
And I mulled...
And I mulled...
Finally, as it was still open for registration...

I just signed up for the Virtual Dopey for myself and the kid’s one miler for my kid (also noting how he couldn’t get a spot in last year’s races.)
It will be slow, count for very little, but...
This year, we run!

So... in view of the above and the fact that I still have a room at SSR for the original race weekend... Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should run for my virtual marathon? Is anyone else doing this? I’m thinking I’ll hit the paths at SSR but is there a map with mile markers on it?
