CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

So I just got tapped for a vaccine this Sunday, I really hope PA is turning a corner for access.

My kid signed up for a shot in Philadelphia since there were stories about the vaccine going to waste because of no shows. His appointment was canceled 2 hours before he was to go to it. He is fine about it but he said he doesn't want to hear stories about it going to waste then. He is only 23 but figured if they are going to let me sign up why not get it. I hope that it starts to become available for anyone who wants it soon.

It will.

The J&J shot is very popular among my friend group. I have friends who are going in the middle of night to a site an hour away to get the shot. They are thankful that it is a one shot dose. I know that there was discussion on whether people would want the J&J but it is very popular here in Western NY.

Governor here opened it up to anyone 16 and older with one of 2 dozen broadly defined health conditions, including overweight or a past or present smoker. Opening the floodgates
Quoting myself as other posters have mentioned that my state, Louisiana, only opened up to citizens over 16 with underlying conditions. I am too lazy to quote the other posters.

A spokesman for our state health department estimated that 80 to 90 % of the population is now eligible.
Good news and bad news. Good news for getting vaccinated but it also is because such a significant portion of our population has comorbidities. Hopefully this will be a wake up call for people to get healthy, seek medical treatment, whatever they can do to improve their health.

Yesterday the governor announced that after 60+, the age will be lowered to 55+, and after that it will be open to everyone. I hope that I will be able to get a vaccine before my late May Disney trip.

Hope you're able to get it by then!

Here in NJ, on Monday they are opening it up to anyone 16-64 with all of the pre-existing conditions that were listed before, but now they are allowing "overweight" instead of just "obese", and so that will open it up to a lot more people. There's no verification of any of this though....as far as pre-existing conditions go. It's essentially an honor system. At least here in Jersey.

Here is the latest doom and gloom story:

Epidemiologist says he's concerned Covid-19 variants in US may "beat us at the vaccination game"
From CNN's Adrienne Vogt

Even as Covid-19 vaccinations ramp up in the US, epidemiologist Michael Osterholm says the country is at a “perfect-storm moment.”
One year since the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a global pandemic, Osterholm expressed caution as the B.1.1.7 variant — first reported in the United Kingdom — has “transmission unlike I've seen any at all since this pandemic began” in some areas.
“Over 50% now of all the viruses coming from Florida, Texas, and Georgia, in fact, are this B.1.1.7 variant,” said Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, on CNN's "New Day."
Health officials in New York City say two variants — B.1.1.7 and B.1.526, first reported in New York — account for half of new cases. And Houston health officials announced that the B.1.1.7 variant has been identified in over half of the city’s wastewater treatment plants.
“The bottom line is study after study shows that it is more transmissible. And, remember, this is coming at us at the very same time we're opening up America as if there is nothing else happening,” Osterholm said.
Some governors, like Gov. Greg Abbott in Texas, have lifted mask mandates and fully opened businesses.
“We’re inviting the virus to go wherever it may want over the course of the next week. So this is the challenge we have, this is all kind of a perfect-storm moment. Will this increase transmissibility? Will this more serious illness with us opening up — at the same time doing more vaccination — how will this all play out? And I think the dynamics of the virus right now, I'm afraid, are going to beat us at the vaccination game,” he said.

This guy just wants things to go bad again I think.

Still sticking to June? And why are you up???????

Insomnia.

Well, if I don't get into this study, considering our county of 3 million people only got 44,000 doses last week and will get less than that this week...yeah, still sticking with June. We haven't even started people with high risk conditions yet.

My fallback option of getting it via the Naval Hospital seems to be an even worse plan. They went 3 weeks without a shipment. Got a small shipment Monday, finally, but they have to play catch up and give out all the overdue 2nd doses first, then will move to phase 1C when they get more supply (who knows when). They are ONLY getting Pfizer shots via their government contract so they are at the mercy of that supply stream. This week, they are only vaccinating people who got their first shots there in JANUARY. Really pushing that 42 day boundary.

He has the negative Nellie tune down pat.

Is this for the ENSEMBLE 2 study?

If so, trial participants will have a 50/50 chance of getting either the real 2-dose vaccine regimen or placebo. Given that the 2nd dose is two months after the first (and you still need to be monitored in the study after getting the 2nd shot), I’d think it may benefit certain higher priority group people not to participate—if you really want a vaccine ASAP— because the supply of vaccines in the US is expected to be more than demand within that timeframe.

He's 45 with no major risk factors, so he's probably 6-10 weeks* from being eligible in CA. With the study guaranteeing one shot (as DLgal said), that would likely be faster.

We're kind of far from Long Beach, and he's white and works from home, so they probably wouldn’t want him anyway, but I'd at least have him call and try.

* CA starts 16+ with very high risk health conditions on Monday, and then are supposed to go by age. I’m assuming it'll be high risk for a few weeks, then 55+ for a few weeks, then hopefully 45+. Supply has been abysmal the last couple of weeks though so who knows.

Are you in OC?

According to the OC website (https://occovid19.ochealthinfo.com/vaccines-administered-oc), around 750k doses were administered and more than 500k of those were complete with a second dose. For a population of 3 million, I would say that is a heckuva job so far.

I thought I read where Pfizer latest study shows their vaccine is just as effective against these variants as the original, so am I missing something?

Is the state of California the one who is making the decision on how many doses go to each county? My region of 1.2 million gets more than that a week so I wonder how California is determining the number of doses being distributing to each county?

Is your state actually administering Moderna and J&J to under-18? Those two vaccines weren’t tested and approved for under-18 yet.
