Just found out yesterday that someone applied for unemployment using DH’s SS#. I’ll gladly accept any advice on things we need to do. We have put a freeze on his credit at all three bureaus, reported it to our state, and been in touch with his employer. In process is SS and I’ll have to look into IRS today. Nothing else seems out of place so far. Any recommendations re identity theft insurance? Currently don’t have it, but I guess maybe it’s a good idea.
eta we also added a fraud alert to the credit bureaus
So sorry this happened to you!
I worked for my state’s DOL and unfortunately this is not uncommon. We were told that the personal data people are using to apply for fraudulent benefits was data stolen in previous breaches. So, as another person commented, your info is unfortunately out there.
You did the right thing by contacting your state. This way they can stop the fraudster from receiving benefits and you have record of you contacting them should they come back to you years down the road asking about improper unemployment payments.
Another general word of caution for all - most of the fraudsters are applying for PUA, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. This is a temporary program available to folks who are un or underemployed due to the pandemic but are not typically eligible for unemployment - like independent contractors and small business owners. PUA was set up quickly, each state has its own system, and it is easy to scam. If someone applies for PUA benefits under your name, your employer will likely not be contacted. So, if you see bank accounts you don’t recognize on your credit report (potentially used to cash a PUA check in your name) or you get a check in the mail for benefits, alert your state’s DOL at once.
And may all the fraudsters be sent to an afterlife that is just one long unshaded queue
