I love credit cards so much! v6.0 - 2023 (see first page for add'l details)

Yikes! I have a plan to replace mine and I was thinking under 2K. Guess I'm being optimistic. What size is yours? I think mine is 80 gallons.

Wow, 80 gallons is HUGE. You must have hot water for days :-) Ours is 48 gallons.

I had a smaller one and it wasn't keeping up when the kids and friends were here.

Now with two it's not an issue, so maybe time to downsize.

The townhouse we bought 2 years ago has an 80 gallon tank. I guess when it was built there was a large corner tub? It's on the 4th floor and will be a major pain to replace as they will have to lift it up to get past the furnace in the same utility closet! Crazy.

Took myself down to my basement this morning and found the water heater capacity. Thankfully, it is not 80 gallons!

It is however, 66 gallons.

Not leaking but it is circa 2010 installation by Sears and is a Kenmore. Down there in my utility area it has loads of space and is easily accessible.

It is electric and has 2 elements. This morning while I was showering I felt the water cool and then warm back up. Perhaps my daughter used some water upstairs in her bath. But this was the first time I've experienced that. So, I'm jumping ahead to maybe an element has failed.

My energy bill for April says I used $16 to heat water. Not sure how this compares to others. It also says $34 for electronics usage. DD works from home part of the week and plays games a lot. I leave a large TV on constantly. $14 for cooling - we had some warm days. Plus other breakdown categories.

So, I'm going to call the company that installed my furnace and have them give an estimate and a checkup. Might as well be proactive.

Third time’s a charm! Finally got a retention offer for 15,000 MR’s for a $2000 spend in 3 months on my Amex gold. I took it! And I’m at the 30 day mark after my AF posted. Thanks everyone for your advice and encouragement! 😊

Congrats! You will need to keep it a year or Amex will claw it back. So don't forget to make a note on your spreadsheet. If you decide to cancel next year, it'll need to be on the very last day the AF is refundable. In most cases, retention offers need to be 13 months apart, so you won't be able to get one next year without committing to 2 more AFs.

I have an Amex everyday. That was my first Amex card 17 years ago. I opened it when I was doing a direct sales business and I had over 700,000 MR’s. I did not know the value of those points back then and cashed them in for gift cards. Wish I would have left them alone. If I had canceled by Amex gold, the MR’s would still show under that everyday card as they are combined.

If you factor in inflation, maybe it's not so bad. :)

Ours was 2002, so way older than yours, if that makes you feel safer.
That's cool that your energy bill is broken out like that, our is not. I have no idea what uses what.

I have 2 personal and 6 biz Chase cards.
Every time I check my officers, 5 of the biz cards have very few on them (like a row and a half).
The other biz and the personals have TONS of offers (like I have to 'load more')
Anyone else experience this?
(No Staples on any of them, unfortunately)

The cards we use the most have the most offers. The ones we met MSR in a few transactions and sock drawered get very few. But sometimes they get good offers that I suspect are targeted to seldom used cards.

They just started breaking it down since installing new smart meters in the last couple of years. I no longer feel the need to turn off lights and I use my dishwasher even when not filled. Electronics is our big spend at the moment but cooling will take over next month.

Love, love, love the Aspire. I get such great value out of the FNC. I think it'd be worth it for the Diamond status and the FNC, plus the $250 resort credit. Careful with the credit bc it doesn't apply everywhere, but looks like Tokyo Bay is on the resort list. Use the link to double check that the filter "resort" is selected. https://www.hilton.com/en/locations/belize/?sortBy=DISTANCE&f-amenityIds=resort You're in a tight window though in that you only have about 11 months between those two trips, so you wouldn't get the $250 resort credit for both trips, but you'd have Diamond status at least for both.

You'll get a FNC in something like 8-12 weeks with the initial Aspire approval. And then one each anniversary, but that one is also delayed 8ish weeks or so, I think. So that would mean you wouldn't have FNCs for your Tokyo trip, but you'd have one FNC for Belize and my guess is one available (the anniversary one) after Belize. You might consider for P2 or yourself one of the other Hilton cards as well right now that are offering the FNC.
Thank you, that's a good point about both of us getting a card, we could get 2 FNC to use. The only problem is that we are working on so many MSRs. I still have $5K on my Biz Plat, $2.5K on Citi AA, $3K on the SW Biz I was just approved for today, we could totally add another $4K but I don't know if we can pull off the AMEX $8K. We spend a lot but most of the places we do our big spending don't take Amex (Costco, kid activities, utilities).
You can use the resort credit for the room rate, that's what we did. I'm not sure if you can charge park tickets to the room. It was cash only when I researched it for the trip 7 years ago. Do you feel it's risky not buying tickets beforehand? You're not guaranteed entry unless you booked the right to buy rate.

Do you have status to get breakfast for both rooms? Diamond will get you breakfast in the restaurant for 2 and lounge access.
DH and I are both Gold.

Check your offers. 10% at Staples on 2/3 of our household's CICs.

Have they officially announced fee free VGC next week? The last couple of cycles they did VGC the week immediately after MCGC.

I don't have any Staples - yet. Chase seems to drop the offers over a couple of days, so I'll be watching later today and tomorrow. I still need a few Disney gift cards.

That sounds very scary. I think I would have done exactly as you and then thought differently about it after the fact. I would encourage you not to rely on the peephole in the future- while you may be able to see who is standing in front of the door, what if it's an "incoherent drunk woman" scam that gets people to let their guard down and then there's people outside of your view?
I've heard of people traveling with simple rubber door stoppers. Maybe wouldn't stop someone strong looking to do you harm, but could prevent housekeeping or someone from entering your room at an inopportune time.
Agree 100% about not relying solely on peephole. I thought about the potential ruse aspect of what she was doing (both at the time and after). I never would have even considered opening the door if my nephew had not been with me. Though even with someone else there, I should not have opened the door and will not do so again in the future. I am just thankful we are safe.

We are headed to Japan in a little over 3 weeks and headed to Tokyo Disney in a month, I was wondering if there is any benefit to DH trying to get the Hilton Aspire. We are staying 3 nights at Hilton Tokyo Bay, we haven't purchased park tickets and we booked 2 rooms (1 night cash because we didn't have enough points). Wondering if the resort credit would be beneficial here. Also looking at staying at a Hilton in June 2024 in Belize.
what kind of room did you book? If executive, lounge access will be included. For us, I couldn't see what we'd be able to use the resort credit on. We just stayed last week. Booked the room for 2 nights on points. The lounge breakfast was honestly one of the best we've had at a hotel. SO many options, western and japanese. Beer, coffee maker that did lattes, cappuccinos, espresso. My husband ate what looked like a full on lunch in there... rice, some sauteed veggies, fish, salad, miso soup. It was a lot. To me, the coffee machine was worth it, lol! I had two espressos the morning we checked out, and that helped me run all over the place before our flight home. There was also a cocktail hour (6-8) that included light snacks. We didn't get to use this as we were in the park, but it seemed popular. The only thing we bought at the hotel was dinner one night, which wasn't more than $10 for each of us, and we got drinks (sodas) AND dessert. If you are a Hilton Honors member, you get 20% off your food purchase at the cafe as well. I would definitely purchase Disney tickets before going and not wait until you arrive. I don't think it's guaranteed for entry... only with the Disney owned hotels.

We just booked 2 twin rooms for 3 nights, we got a really great rate 91K points for the first room (3 nights), 63K points for second room 2 nights, and 15K Yen for the 3rd night (which is $108 at the current exchange rate).
I'm not sure what benefits we'll get a Gold members in Japan, in the US we would get breakfast. We did end up booking all rooms under DH's account, I didn't think to book one room under my account and the other under his.

I plan to buy our tickets soon, I just keep watching the exchange rate and it seems to be moving in our favor so I keep holding off.

I might just apply for the Hilton Biz for myself and hold off on the Aspire for DH since the Biz has the elevated SUB.

Does anyone know if the Staples offer works at staples.com? I have the offer on one card but there are no Staples locations in my state. I've used offers on AMEX cards but those specifically said staples.com.

Yeah, the YEN was the lowest rate for us the last two days of our trip, which worked in our favor cuz those were our Disney days (spent a lot on souvenirs), and then our last shopping day which we went kind of wild buying 5 pairs of shoes, tons of snacks and foods to take back, etc.

There was a dedicated Hilton Honors line for checkin, which saved us a lot of time because there was like 5 people in the regular line, and they took us right away ahead of them. Not sure what Gold perks you'll get in Japan... but I can say their restaurant which the majority of the hotel was going to for breakfast was absolute NUTS. SO MANY PEOPLE and so loud. We accidentally went there the first morning before realizing it was not the lounge. When we got to the lounge we had a huge sigh of relief, much quieter and more our pace.

As Gold, you get breakfast for 2 outside of the US. In the US, you only get a credit now.

Since both rooms are under your DH, it'll be YMMV if you can get breakfast for 4. We had 1 room for 4 of us. The lady at check-in was very nice and gave all of us restaurant breakfast, to make up for no upgrade available was what she said. We're Diamond, so we would have gone to the lounge or split up 2 and 2 if she didn't do that.

When we stayed there in 2019 the breakfast was nuts too. So many people and even though we went in the Hilton honors line to get in they still let tons of people ahead of us from the regular line

PA includes state minimum liability and the Gold covers CDW and LDW. Sounds like she's covered, but not all that well with state minimums. Allianz offers single trip insurance.
Thank you. Given the fact that she owns nothing and is pretty judgment proof at this stage of her life, I think the state minimums should be sufficient. LOL. I do think she needs to get a damage waiver just so she doesn't have to deal with anything if she's in a minor accident.

To add to all the Japan talk, we're not even a week back yet and DH is asking me to plan a return trip, LOL. Tbh, we have enough URs we could use for flights already. I would just need to work on accumulating hotel points, or find some other accommodation alternative. He is interested in doing the two tips... Fukuoka (w/ Nagasaki/Hiroshima trips) and Sapporo/Hokkaido and national park there. Guess I'm jumping back into research land, as I know nothing about these areas, if a car is needed, etc. Since our trips for next year are already planned, we're looking at returning in 2024 (when we were planning Europe, but honestly at this point I don't mind returning to Japan instead, it was just so awesome!).

I bet this is how we'll be after we return from our first trip next year! I already know our 2 weeks won't be enough... I'll probably start planning a return for 2025 even before we get there in 2024 lol

LOL, good idea! For us at least we didn't feel like just shy of 2 weeks was enough time. It literally FLEW by and we felt like we didn't even touch the tip of the iceberg yet. DH has been researching everything about Japan since we got back, including looking at real estate there *facepalm*

The Hilton no annual fee card might be a good option bc it's offering a FNC right now as part of the SUB and it's only a $1k MSR. You could do an Aspire, no fee or biz or combo of any of those to achieve what you're looking for. I think the Aspire might hinge on if you'll use Diamond benefits/credit on your 2024 trip in Belize.

Agree the staff were all wonderful (with the exception below). The bellman went above and beyond when we checked out by helping us across the street with our bags and waited with us for our Uber driver. Thank goodness he did because he ended up having to call the driver because the driver went to the wrong location. Needless to say, I tipped him properly for his excellent service.

I have no complaints about the inside of the hotel, the historical nature of the building is beautiful inside. Even a room on the street side was quiet enough for us at night. The unhoused people around the hotel do not bother me either, but I included that piece of information for anyone who does consider it a safety issue. My complaint is the amount of noise/traffic which hits you the minute you step out the front door. That made it feel very stressful for me personally. While I fully understand it is a big city which comes with noise (I have lived in Manhattan), there are much quieter streets/areas within walking distance of this specific location.

And I think I may have figured out the bottled water issue. It appears the hotel may have discontinued bottled water service and replaced it with water coolers and reusable containers (I think this occurred right before/during our visit). The day we arrived there were dozens of bottles of water sitting on a table in the common area as you got off the elevator on our floor. They were never there again during our stay. There was a stainless steel water bottle in our room and the employees directed us to a water cooler by the elevators.

We checked out yesterday and I do want to add a story about our last night. We were winding down and getting ready for bed around 11:00 pm when there was a loud commotion at our door. At first we didn't realize it was at our door because our room had an inner and outer door (unique layout as PP mentioned above). It soon became clear that it was our door and that someone was trying to get in our room. We could hear the card scan unsuccessfully (because we had pressed the electric privacy lock), and someone was trying to turn the door handle forcefully and started banging on the door. The peephole wasn't an actual peephole (I found out later) so I couldn't see who was out there. I yelled something like "who is it/who are you looking for" and a woman answered incoherently. She then started yelling "Carrie, I know you are in there because I can hear you" in English with a N American accent. I assumed she was drunk and lost. So I responded "you have the wrong room, I am not Carrie. This is not your room." She started yelling incoherently again and trying the door again, so I called the front desk.

This is where it got really weird. I was basically frantic at this point and said "someone is trying to get in my room and they are banging on the door!" The guy said "yes, we are sending someone up since you still can't get in your room." I replied "No no, that is wrong we have been in our room and no one else should be allowed in our room. We don't need help getting in the room. We do not know who is trying to get into our room." He didn't seem to understand what I was saying, so I repeated that a stranger was banging on my door trying to get in. He finally said "we will send security up to check." Based on the exact exchange at that time, my nephew and I both thought it sounded like they had actually given a key to our room to someone. At this point I told my 19 yo nephew (who works out and it is very fit) to come to the door with me so I could open it. The woman was still yelling at "Carrie to open the door." I kept yelling "there is no Carrie here, you're at the wrong room." I finally opened the door slightly while yelling "you have the wrong room." When she saw me, she had a very surprised look on her face. Not sure if that was because she realized I wasn't Carrie or if she was just surprised by the fact that the door finally opened. Because her overall face and demeanor indicated she wasn't fully coherent.

In the brief glance I got of her while I opened/shut the door, it appeared she was drunk, high, and/or mentally unstable. After that she didn't yell or try to open the door again. Security never checked on us, so I have no idea why that woman was at our door. I mentioned it at the front desk the next morning and the woman said "my colleague said something about someone trying to get in a room last night, that sounded so weird." I am a well traveled former flight attendant and I have never had any type of scary experience like that before. I am definitely not saying it had anything to do with this specific hotel, but the way they handled it was not great (neither was the way I handled it). My nephew and I are still not convinced that they didn't give this woman a key to our room; we had the electronic privacy option on which would have prevented the use of any key/pass, so we will never know. In hindsight, I should have immediately called back down to the front desk to confirm what had transpired. We were just so shocked and glad that she was gone that I didn't even think to call back down. (A couple of other things in hindsight: I will always check the peephole when I check into a room to be sure it works, and I will never open the door again like I did. I will wait for security.)
As a solo traveler, this would have really scared me. I wonder how this woman got up to your floor? Did the elevator require a key card to access guest floors? When I was staying at the horrible Marriott Grand Palace Brussels (a hotel which I *do not* recommend), they had unhoused people living within a few feet of the front doors of the hotel. As unsightly as it was, being from a large city it didn't bother me very much (except when they were smoking stinky stuff and calling out to me as I entered and exited the hotel), but what *really, really* bothered me was the fact that the hotel did not have key card access in the elevator (singular since 2 elevators were out of service) turned on. Which meant that said unhoused people could enter the hotel and take the elevator up to any guest floor of their choosing at any time. With the renovations going on the front desk had no visual on the elevator and there was no one at the door to restrict access to the lobby. As a solo traveler I take my safety very seriously and any hotel that doesn't is one that I won't stay at.
