Railing Refurbishment Moves to Center of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort Lobby

Planters no longer block the view of the lobby directly in front of the Monorail station. A PhotoPass photographer was available in this space when we stopped by.

Instead, the planters are around a section of the second-floor railings at the other end of the lobby.

We saw some paneling behind the planters, potentially to be used to cover the floor.

Seating is now just available on the outskirts of the lobby and construction walls block most of the space.

Plywood covers the floor, keeping it protected from the two lifts and other construction materials.

Crews have been using the lifts to reach railings and columns of the guest floors above — replacing, refurbishing, and repainting various sections.

The top three floors have white scrim up against their railings.

We found the crew members painting white columns near the front of the lobby.

Although seating has been moved back into this area below the Monorail station, it was not yet open this morning as crews finished preparing the area.

Red velvet ropes blocked the couches and chairs from guest access.

Meanwhile, scaffolding still covers the building around and above Gasparilla Island Grill.

The quick-service restaurant remains open despite construction on the guest room balconies above it.

Guests just need to walk through a tunnel of construction walls.

Another entrance in the construction walls is just for crew members.

Significantly more scaffolding has been installed, reaching all the way up to the roof and extending to a closed ramp near the Grand Floridian Café entrance.

Above, we could see construction materials on balconies and through balcony doors.

One door was lined with blue painter’s tape and had a sign taped to it. The balcony chairs were stacked and covered in plastic.

A temporary ramp has been set up at a different entrance to replace the closed one during construction.
WOW! A Picture paints a thousand words........thank you so much for updating us. What a sneak peek behind the magic!😉

I was bored at work today and decided that spending Easter at GF sounded like a great idea. So I went ahead and booked a long weekend. I totally forgot about the construction being pushed back again for the main lobby. I was looking forward to seeing the Easter eggs and cottage in the lobby. Should I save Easter at the Grand for another year?

Do what I do, book 2.

It’s hard to say. For me the grand rooms and grounds beat the rest . Lobby status is hard to tell . They are not doing a traditional time frame.

Pick a second to be back up.
Hope GF wins and done in time.

Don’t forget you can watch from the boat dock. I also watch ewp from the BC building. You go straight through the lobby and out the back and sit on the stairs. A nice view and usually quiet.

The gate is definitely sending non-guests with ADRs to the overflow with a 3 hour parking tag unless doing valet. We knew that would be the case, but thought I'd share.

I took one quick pic.

GFC was terrible tonight. The worst service we've had in a long time plus a raw hamburger. We like breakfast, but won't eat lunch or dinner there again.

No thanks to a raw burger here too. Sorry about that!

I have 1 def and a 2nd maybe trip in Sept at the grand, The construction is fine, I have already stayed there 3 times this year, I know what the lobby looks like. It would be jackhammer noises near my room that I would run from. I have poly in Nov and have a water view so not to end up near the dvc construction.

It is hard for people that have been waiting to finally stay here or come back. There really has not been good communication on this. We still don’t know when RPC will reopen?

My only hope it all looks wonderful when done. We love the new rooms and suites! Prettiest rooms on property!

If you can ignore the lobby it may be worth still staying at GF for some.

EEwwwwww.....raw hamburger meat is gross! :crazy2: Combined with bad service, it makes for a memorable visit for all the wrong reasons. Hopefully it's the only bad experience of your trip!

I do think Disney does a good job of making construction look less constructiony?? I mean, most places just throw up unpainted plywood or mdf board as a barrier and call it a day. Disney paints the walls to blend in with the surroundings, adds planters and even pictures.

We've had fantastic food and service everywhere else. I think the whole restaurant was just a bit off last night.

We have a trip planned for early October and are renting DVC points so i can't really change anything without a big hassle. Starting to regret picking here. It was on me and my wife's bucket list.

That looks terrible. I think I will cancel Nov 21 arrival at GF …
If it's the state of the lobby you are most concerned about, you should be fine for a Nov 21 arrival. From what I understand, their plan is to have all the upper floor work done and the blockades moved from the lobby in time to put up the gingerbread house. Then, sometime after the holidays, begin the actual lobby refurbishment.

November is a long ways away, it might be almost done by then.

I'm going in September and I'm not a fan of the construction, but you most likely won't spend a lot of time in the lobby. There's a lot of other good things to this resort besides the lobby, and the discount they're offering for GF right now (probably due to the construction) makes it a pretty good deal.

Checked in today!! The pictures are correct but honestly didn’t bother me. I walked through the lobby just fine around the walls. Walked through the tunnel to get to Gasparilla.. not a big deal. DH and I sat at courtyard pool and heard nothing but a little tinkering. Honestly the screaming kids were more annoying. I know it’s Disney but was a bit much at times.
I requested my room in Boca Chica through touring plans, booked a lagoon view and have almost exactly what I asked for! A view of MK and Contemporary! New rooms are gorgeous and can’t hear any construction at all. We had an awesome first day.

Curious what room type you booked. Are you in a studio villa?

We returned home today from a five-night stay in a ground floor Boca Chica TPV room. We found the exterior construction around the GFC and Gasparilla entrances, ironically, more annoying than the interior construction in the lobby. The rerouted entrances and ramps (DD, 2, still in a stroller) are somewhat confusing and don't usually lead to automatic doors!

We found the service excellent everywhere except the GFC. While our server was very friendly, the food took too long to be prepared, which on top of an already lengthy wait after checking in was disappointing. The quality of the food, though, was very high and mostly salvaged the experience (though we did not order a hamburger!).

A word to the wise—Gasparilla always seems to be frigid. Especially at breakfast, when it is not terribly hot even this time of year, bring a sweater if you plan to eat in. (There is no outdoor seating as was customary pre-construction given the extent of the scaffolding.) We took to calling it "Gaspachilla's", which I think will stick on future trips.

IMHO, for those looking for a "perfect" Grand Floridian stay, especially first timers, it is best to wait until the dust has settled. But I'd guess and am hopeful that the repeat crowd would love every minute of their stay just like we did.

I should also add that GFC and Citricos have frosted their windows to obscure the scaffolding, which detracted somewhat from the dining experience. Do not expect to enjoy a view of the grounds from either restaurant as there is none. (We found the food and service themselves at Citricos excellent.)

we had the opposite experience. we had breakfast at GFC and food was excellent, service great and food prompt. Citricos on the other hand.. food was good but not what I expected. I agree about atmosphere though not worthy of a signature restaurant. Also people wearing park attire.. I know they have relaxed somewhat, but the people sitting next to us had sleeveless tank tops and bathing suit type shorts on with flip flops. I do think they need to draw the line somewhere.
