Arizona/Utah May 2017 - Trip Report - updated 7/22/17 (Day 3)

Day 2 - Sedona

Day 2 started bright and early, at 5:00, with a sunrise hike right outside of the gates of the Enchantment. The evening before Mike and Troy told us that they would be meeting for an "unofficial" hike to see the sunrise over Sedona, and it was not to be missed. I immediately knew I wanted to go. DH also wanted to go, but we didn't think the boys would be able to wake up that early and still function later in the day, so he decided to let me go on my own. So, I woke up about 4:30 to get myself dressed (in the dark) and to the meeting place in time. Before I knew it, everyone in my family was awake and we were all headed out the door about 4:50 to meet the group. The only ones from the group that did not make it to were one of the retired couples and the college aged son. The hike was an easy one with just one part where you had to make it over a few rocks. It was totally worth it, and you need to make sure you do it while on this trip! Mike and Troy told us that on most occasions you can see hot air balloons launching, but unfortunately, we did not see any.

After the hike we all went back to our rooms to shower and get ready for the day. The day is set up so that in the AM (after breakfast) we were scheduled to go on the Pink Jeep tour, followed by lunch at the Barking Frog in downtown Sedona and then OYO time at the resort in the afternoon. Dinner is OYO.

Breakfast at the Enchantment is in the Che Ah Chi restaurant. You can order anything off the menu (excluding alcohol) or get the breakfast buffet, which had you standard pancakes, eggs, cereal, fruit, etc. I was the only one in my family that elected to not get the buffet. Each morning I go the Cathedral Rock Toast. I am not one to take pics of my food, but this was so good - I highly recommend getting it. :)

enhance

After breakfast everyone gathered by the golf pro shop to await the arrival of the pink jeeps. We were waiting for about 15 minutes, so Troy decided to challenge my boys to a hula hooping contest. The guides were so amazing at filling in with little activities like that when there was even a moment of downtime. Another time when they did this was during the welcome dinner. The boys were getting a little antsy during the Hopi Indian presentation, so Mike swooped in and whisked the boys away to search for any wildlife they could see (they ended up seeing some deer). This is just one thing that makes ABD so amazing.

enhance

Once the jeeps arrived, we all piled in. Our family ended up in a jeep by ourselves, and the other eight, plus the guides were split up between two other jeeps. The jeep went thru town to where we would be doing our off road adventure - maybe a 15 minute ride. For the jeep ride, I would recommend wearing sunglasses (with a strap if you have one) so that the dust does not go in your eyes. The jeep ride was a ton of fun. It could get pretty bumpy, so if you are prone to motion sickness, take a non-drowsy Dramamine before hand and don't sit on the back seat of the jeep - sit on the sides. Our driver was Patty, and she gave lots of great info about the area while on the tour. Don't be afraid to ask questions!

After the tour, which was about two hours in total, the jeeps drove us all the The Barking Frog for lunch. Lunch was buffet style and consisted of fried chicken, roasted chicken, and sides. They also gave us cactus fries, which you must taste! I really liked them. :) I don't have any pics of the restaurant, but I don't think it is normally open at that time (maybe just that day?) , so we were the only ones in there. Even tho we were the only ones, we were still in a private party room off to the side.

I should mention also that y youngest son has food allergies - peanut, tree nut. ABD so wonderful about everything. So if you have any questions about this, please ask!

After lunch we were given the choice to spend about an hour in downtown Sedona or going back to the resort We chose to stay downtown to just look around a bit, as did most of the other people. An hour is about all you need. There are some good looking ice cream shops, so if you want to not have dessert at lunch, you can get some good treats there.

enhance

Once we made it back to the resort, we had about 4 hours (I think) until our dinner reservations. Dinner that night was OYO. You could either Uber or taxi back to town or eat at the resort. I don't think many people ever really go back into town. At the welcome dinner, the guides will put out sign up sheets to make reservations at one of the two resort restaurants. Everyone from our group chose to eat at Tii Gavo, the less fancy of the two. The food was good - I recommend the tacos and prickly pear margarita. :)

In the afternoon, we took full advantage of the resort amenities. We swam, played tennis, bocce ball, and cricket! All of the equipment is free to use.

enhance

Following dinner, at dark, the guides told us that there would be someone available with a telescope so that we could see the stars and such, but sadly, he never showed up. It would have been neat to see, but no big deal... because we went on a "wildlife hunt". A little backstory, but I really wanted to see a javelina in person. DH and I were in Texas years ago and i heard about them, but had never seen them. So, we went out to walk around the resort, assuming we would just see some deer. Well, we ended up seeing a pack of about 15 javelina! It was wild! I only had my cell phone with me, and it was pretty dark, so I only got some grainy pics.

After this, we headed back to our room to relax and go to sleep. Tomorrow we would board the bus and make our way to the Grand Canyon!

Day 3 coming in about a week or so - we are headed to the beach!

Love your report. Thank you so much for writing it. I swear every time someone writes a report it bumps that trip to the top of my list....

Thank you, Sayhello, Superspectral, Chirple, Luv2trav etc. for your input, comments, suggestions on what walking shoes to get especially when on "slick rock". We went to Bass Pro Shop, my Husband and I each got a pair of Merrell Moab II, my daughter Gaston Hiker - all light, non waterproof, very comfortable.

For those who are on the Arizona/Utah trip now, or recently got back - do we need light jacket or sweater for evening. I know it's very hot during day but not sure how cool the early mornings, late nights are.

Day 3 - Travel to the Grand Canyon

Day three - our first real big travel day. One thing that I think is so great about traveling with ABD is the ease in which we transitioned from one hotel to the next. Bags were to be placed outside our hotel rooms early in the morning (by 7 or 8 I think) and they were magically whisked away and then delivered to our next hotel room... I think Tinkerbell has something to do with it. ;)

After getting ourselves all packed up, dressed, and ready to go, we made our way to breakfast. Once again, you could get the buffet or order off of the menu. Once we were finished eating breakfast the group met at the coach bus to make our way towards the Grand Canyon, with a few stops along the way. After leaving the Enchantment Resort we made one last stop in Sedona at the Mesa Airport overlook, which had great views of Sedona. We stayed here for just a bit - maybe 15 minutes to take a few pics before hitting the road.

Once we were on the road, our first stop was Bearizona Wildlife Park. The drive there was about an hour and 45 minutes or so. Tho some of the drives were long, they went very quickly. There is so much to see out the windows and the guides do a great job of providing info, playing games, and playing cartoons/movies. They also had tons of bottled water and a huge variety of snacks, which were available at any time. There is also wifi on the bus, but the service is spotty, so don't rely on it.

Once we arrived at Bearizona, were were treated by two guides who would give us a private tour of the park. This was so great because we were able to do everything the park had to offer in a short amount of time. I think we were there for a total of about 3.5 -4 hours or so. The first stop at Bearizona was the owl show. Our group got a private show - we did not have to wait for the posted show times - very streamlined!

At the conclusion of the owl show, our guides walked us around part of the park on our way to the open air "safari" ride. On the way, we were given the opportunity to feed the otters if we wanted - my youngest was the only one from our family to do it. :) We were also brought to an area in which we were able to see some of the animals close up.

We then made our way to the safari ride, which was a converted school bus - my boys thought this was pretty funny. :) We saw lots of animals, especially bears! They also gave us food to feed to the bison (if I remember correctly - it was to feed something!).

After the safari ride we made our way over to the jaguar enclosure where were were given some info about him and he was able to show off some of the training tricks he'd been learning. Lunch was at a restaurant right near the jaguar, overlooking the enclosure. Lunch consisted of a buffet of BBQ chicken, corn, salads, soup, etc. After lunch we were given time (about an hour or so) to explore Bearizona on our own. Overall, we really liked this stop. I believe this is the first year that this was incorporated into the trip. It was something a little different, and everyone in our group seemed to enjoy our time there.

After leaving Bearizona, we made our way to Williams, AZ - Route 66. I think we stayed here about an hour. There isn't much to do here other than walk around and look at some of the shops. We ended up finding a small playground where our boys played for a bit with some other kids that were there. But, it was neat to see the influence of the town on the Cars movie (which we watched after getting back on the bus).

enhance

After our quick stop in Williams, it was time to make our way to the Grand Canyon! We were very excited about this because none of us had ever been. Once again, on the way, Mike and Troy were full of interesting facts about our surroundings and the canyon itself. For lodging, we were to stay at the Tunderbird Lodge, which is right on the rim of the canyon. Mike pointed out where this trip use to stay, outside the park... I'm so glad we were not staying there! While that hotel looked "nicer" you can't beat staying right on the rim. It's all about location!!

The first stop at the Grand Canyon was near the visitor's center. Im not sure what were were expecting, but it was a lot more crowded than I thought it would be and was a little worried that this would not be the experience that I had thought. But, once we made it more into the "village" it was a lot less crowded. I won't spoil how they did the "big reveal", but wow - the canyon is spectacular!! We had about 45 minutes/an hour or so to explore near the visitors center - after taking some very staged reveal pics! LOL!

After we checked into our room at the Thunderbird, we had a little bit of time to relax and explore around a bit before dinner. There was a California Condor talk that some people went to (that we did the following day). We chose to get settled and just walk along the rim of the canyon a bit. Like I mentioned before, the Thunderbird is an old hotel, but it is clean, well air-conditioned, and super close to the rim of the canyon. It can be a "disappointment" after the Enchantment, but it was perfect because of where we were located. We were able to get to the rim of the canyon in less than 30 seconds after leaving the door to the hotel. And, we all had canyon view rooms!

Dinner that night was in a "ballroom" type place on the 2nd floor of the Thunderbird. On the bus earlier in the day, Mike and Troy asked us what we wanted - chicken, steak, or burger and how we wanted it cooked. There was also a variety of side dishes and desserts and a cash bar. The food was pretty good and the steaks were cooked just as we ordered them. We were able to watch the sunset over the canyon from dinner, and it was beautiful.

enhance

After dinner, there was some entertainment by two Native Americans. I believe there are usually more, but the one guy said it was graduation season and a bunch of the other people were bust with that! I didn't end op staying for most of this because our younger son was pretty tired. But, DH and my older son stayed and said it was really cool... especially the hoop dance.

enhance

That brings us to the end of day 3 - up next - exploring the Canyon!

CJ - Did you have any trouble finding snacks for your youngest on the bus ride? DS has the same allergies & we're going next summer. PS - Love your trip report!

Not at all! They had a huge variety of stuff - cookies, raisins, granola bars, graham crackers, chips, fruit snacks, fresh fruit, etc. Our guides also went out and purchased the pouch applesauces for him since some of the other stuff wasn't safe. The guides will be aware of the allergies ahead of time, so they will plan accordingly. I think the snacks might have been one of the highlights of the trip for him. LOL! :)

Ah, yes, the Grand Hotel in Tusayan! It was a perfectly nice hotel, and definitely the nicest in the area at the time, but I'd've traded to be on the Rim in a second!!

The only advantage was being able to walk over to see the IMAX movie whenever it fit our schedule. The Guides gave us tickets. It was a nice intro to the history of the Canyon.

But I'd still rather have stayed on the Rim!! :)
