Sportsman's Lodge? Skipping FOL Pass at Universal?

Flying into LA for three nights on Dec. 28th before going to Anaheim. Going to see Hamilton and Universal.

Choosing a hotel..... I like Sportsman's Lodge for the price and the free shuttle to Universal. Does the hotel itself get a thumbs up or down from anyone here? The thread on this hotel is really old.

Should we expect to be able to swim in the pool in December? Or will it be too cold?

Open to other hotel suggestions.

Also: Thinking two shorter days at Universal rather than one long one, using single rider but not Front of Line pass.... they are outrageous in price. Thoughts? Kids are old enough to do single rider on most rides.

Thanks!

P.

I am not familiar with that hotel. I've only stayed at Hilton and Sheraton - which are both right next to Universal Studios. I know there are several less expensive places to stay fairly close by, but not walkable. I like to be able to walk back to my room as needed.

It will be too cold. Although, I generally see kids in pools no matter how cold it is.

Based on the dates you are going, 2 days is probably better if you believe your kids will enjoy everything there. The Harry Potter area is kind of small. Even with very long waits for everything there, you can get through everything in a few hours. The rest of the park isn't very appealing to my group. I don't like motion sensor rides and my companions get bored on the backlot tour. I would expect the park to be extremely crowded on the dates you are going.

We have swam in Anaheim in January. We have also had to wear long pants and coats to the parks. It just depends on the weather.

We are going down in November and I need to find a decent but not too pricy hotel in LA the night before we check into the grand Californian. Leaning toward Burbank.
