We checked out the Epcot Festival of the Arts last weekend, the opening weekend of the festival (January 13 & 14). I wanted to write a quick review of what we tried so that hopefully it can be helpful to others. Spoiler: we were extremely disappointed this year. In fairness, we did not repeat dishes that we tried last year, and obviously Disney brought back the more successful dishes, so perhaps we set ourselves up for failure. If you want to read my reviews from last year's event, you can find them here: 2017 Epcot Festival of the Arts Booth Reviews. My chief complaint this year was the value of the dishes. We spent a LOT on food for a short trip and a lot of the money we spent at the Festival of the Arts, I would consider a waste. Here are my thoughts.

DNhHPA7.png

We arrived at the festival shortly before 11:00 Saturday, expecting to find the booths open early as we have with other Epcot festivals. We came in the international gateway and headed toward Canada. Finding the Canada booth still not serving to guests, we ventured forth to Mexico as I could see crowds entering World Showcase from Future World and I was afraid that the Mexico line would get long.

iGjieyD.png

It was super cold out, so we ordered a couple of drinks from Joffrey's. My fiancé is braver than I am so he had an iced drink while I tried the hot Cinnamon Sensation, a special offering for the festival - espresso mixed with rumchata and cinnamon whiskey, with steamed milk and whipped cream. This was fine but nothing I would go out of the way for.

With drinks in hand, we made it to the empty Artista Hambriento queue in Mexico's perpetual kiosk location. We ordered both savory dishes - the mixiote de cordero (lamb) and the tacos de puerco. These were expensive, $9 and $10, respectively.

First up, we have the Mixiote de Cordero, which translates roughly to "$9 bag of chewy lamb". Okay fine, it was actually Wrapped Slow Braised Lamb marinated in Tres Chiles Paste and Spices – $8.95. This was unappetizing and nearly inedible. Each of us took at least one bite that had to come back out into a napkin as it was entirely fat and gristle. What wasn't fat was chewy and tough. The smoky sauce didn't add anything flavor-wise that would have kept us eating. Most of this went in the trash.

As6H6FD.png

We also tried the absolutely absurdly priced $9.95 tacos de puerco. "Two Corn Tortillas with Slow-roasted Pork Shoulder marinated in Ancho Paste, served with Sweet Plantain Purée and garnished with Pea Tendril" I liked these; my travel partner did not care for them at all. I didn't realize they were pork and they are only about two bites each, but the pork had a nice flavor to me and the plantain spread was rich and sweet, if not off-putting texture wise. Our "after" picture shows the unappetizing amount of grease we couldn't catch in a napkin. I would say these are worth about $4. They needed something crunchy and a serious price cut.

I would not order either dish again. My fiancé said it best: "Mexico, you fooled us again!" Except maybe it was a different F word. Possibly.

I wanted to see the art displays in the Odyssey building so we went in to finish our coffees and get warm. The attraction posters were pretty cool, but the flower arranging seminar that was going on in there was the real draw. The hosts were a bit much for me but many folks were rapt. We decided to try something from the Painter's Palate, but I was trying to stay away from things I'd tried last year and the Croissant Trio was ruled out for that reason. Just as we got in line to order, I heard the CM tell a guest that they were out of the gallery bites hors d'ouevres trio, so that was not an option either. Instead we both just got the jazz IPA. It was fine, nothing to rave about but a fine option if you're in the area.

I snapped some pics of the other offerings.

We both wanted to try the deconstructed Reuben from the deconstructed dish, so we got in line. The pick up area was WAY backed up. R waited in line while I went to decadent delights nearby and picked up some beers. I had the strawberry blonde nitro while R chose the double chocolate stout. The cm working the window tried to give me two chocolate stouts and tell me one was strawberry blonde. I had to straighten him out pretty assertively to get the correct beer, which was a mistake. It just tasted like foamy chemicals. R liked his chocolate stout - I thought it was fine but I'm not a huge fan of stouts so one sip was good for me on that. ($4, $4.25)

We waited 13 minutes from paying until getting our food at the deconstructed dish (I checked the time on the receipt when we finally got our food). That probably doesn't sound too long until you actually stand there with more and more people cramming in behind you and nothing coming out of the kiosk. Let me assure you, 13 minutes waiting at a food kiosk is ridiculous and the entire horde of people waiting with us totally agreed. I understand they are doing elevated plating and it's the first weekend but this was ridiculous. Especially as this was a returning dish this year.

3Tp50ka.png

This dish was really good! We liked the "rye" puff pastry covered in caraway seeds, the delicious salty corned beef and the tasty horseradish mustard on the plate. Unfortunately our serving was a little too fatty and despite being $6.50 was regrettably small.

At this point we'd spent over $60, admittedly mostly on booze, and we were starving. We cut our losses and headed out of Epcot to get a decent lunch.

liEB6Qh.png

We're nothing if not optimistic and persistent, so the next night we returned to Epcot to eat dinner at the festival. First up was my most-anticipated item: Frose in France.

t80qhPo.png

Frozen rose with grey goose and peach purée, $11. This was really creamy and delicious. I loved it and my fiancé was surprised by how much he liked it too. We enjoyed the Frose with the pork rillettes, which were served so cold that they were totally solid inside an adorable plastic "can" container.

Dy5NPZ7.png

The bread accompanying this spreadable delicacy was gone long before the pork rillettes despite careful rationing. We loved the cornichons. I'm not sure what the gel substance on top of the rillettes was but it tasted like beef bouillon jello. The rillettes were super rich to the point that we couldn't finish the serving. So I would call this a decent value but wish we'd stopped into les Halles for more bread first. ($8.75)

UW3JzJh.png

I was really looking forward to trying the hummus trifle in morocco until I saw the price. At this point it wasn't even sticker shock, but I can't pay $9.00 for a tiny cup of hummus with ground beef. Instead we rationalized a tiny serving of flatbread for $8, which was actually delicious but served to us cold.

Nie3z86.png

Mediterranean Flat Bread with Zaatar, Olive Oil Artichoke, Olives, Mozzarella and Feta Cheese – $8.00

I imagine it's even more amazing hot. The flavors really worked and it had an almost chipotle flavor to it. I wish I could get a big one for like $12 and call it a day (hint hint Tangierine Cafe). The picture is a little deceptive due to it being so dark, but this is exactly half the size of a flatbread you'd get at Pinocchio's Village Haus or the Mara and made on the same crust. The most expensive flatbread at those locations is $11.99, so I'd say this was worth about $6.

Figuring we might just be too cold, we set out looking for a liquid blanket. We sort of found some appealing options at Block & Hans where I grabbed a MIA beer co Mega Mix pale ale and my fiancé went with the honor warrior IPA. This was at least a full sized (canned or bottled) beer, so at the $8-9 range at least we didn't need two each to have a full serving.

dbjdjqq.png

I really liked my choice, R was kinda "meh" on his and I didn't find it very unique. The menu claims these are special festival offerings but I have seen the honor warrior there before.

We took advantage of a few photo ops and made our way to the Italy booth for our "must try" desert of the festival - the cream fritters.

Eeei0oM.png
Crema Fitta, Pesche e Rucola Pesto, Ciliege di Amarasca: Cream Fritters, Peach and Arugula Pesto and Amarena Cherries – $7.00

These were amazing! They were like beignets meet cheesecake. The sauces accompanying the fritters actually lent a very unique flavor to this dish and we liked each having our own fritter to enjoy. We only got one cherry though! At $7, this dish was stupid expensive for what we got and again we were about $55 out of pocket and still kinda hungry. Feeling like we'd been bamboozled enough by this exorbitantly priced festival, we left to go get dinner elsewhere.

As you can tell, we were underwhelmed by this year's offerings. To be honest, most of the dishes just didn't look or sound appealing to me. That's obviously a very individual taste thing, but with fewer kiosks than at other festivals, there was simply less to choose from and not much to my liking. While I limited myself from ordering things I'd had last year, the only item I really wanted to have again was the charcuterie, which you can order at most table service restaurant anywhere in WDW. I felt like overall the dishes were priced at about twice what they should have been and portions were small and not consistently high quality. Unlike the parting sentiment after last year's festival, unless it just works out to be convenient to visit at this time of year again, I would probably not plan another visit to Epcot specifically to try this festival next year. If I did, I might look into the dining plan as these items would be a good use of snack credits for sure!

I also wanted to post a quick review of Geyser Point since we were just there. We've been to Geyser Point a good handful of times now, but usually we are just enjoying a cocktail and the view. On our last visit we noticed that they'd added a host stand for seating and we briefly discussed the popularity of Geyser Point and the need for organized seating with one of the bartenders. I didn't think much of it, but between that visit a few weeks ago and our visit last weekend, one of the unofficial Disney news/fan sites posted a re-review of Geyser Point that was pretty negative. In that review, the complaints were about portion size, the flavor/quality of the food, and that the menu offerings had changed since Geyser Point opened. I wanted to post my review as I had lowered my expectations based on that other review, but we ended up having a great experience.

We came hungry and cold after having snacked around Epcot for a while earlier that afternoon. We were seated on the side of the lounge near the lake and told we could sit in either half of the two adjacent tables for two. We chose the interior table nearer the bar, and there wasn't really a heater aimed at us so we were a little chilly. The host repeatedly kept attempting to seat another party at the other table for two (which is basically right on top of where we were sitting, in case you haven't been there) but every other party asked for another table - probably partly due to the fact that they'd more or less be joining us for lunch and also it was really chilly and breezy.

This is an official disney photo, not my photo, but you can see in the lower left a duo of tables like we were seated at, in case you can't visualize:

8wAdMnH.png

I feel certain that guest reluctance to sit basically *with* another party played a part in Disney implementing host and hostess seating here.

bzujjLJ.png

First up was our drinks - R, my fiance, had a Space Dust IPA draft and I received not exactly what I ordered. What you see pictured here is the Huckleberry Punch with a splash of lemonade. What I actually ordered was the huckleberry vodka (that they use in the huckleberry punch) with lemonade. What I ordered is supposed to look like this:

8JnkS7Pl.png

The huckleberry punch is good, though, so I just kept it instead of sending it back. The huckleberry punch is 44 North Mountain Huckleberry Vodka, Bols Creme de Cassis, fresh lemon juice and cranberry juice ($12). It's delicious, just sweeter than I would like, hence my failed attempt to order just the vodka and lemonade. R was glad to see the Space Dust on draft and enjoyed it.

I wanted to try the chili cheese waffle fries after we'd seen the waffle fries looking golden and delicious on prior visits, but the article I read made me scared of the "bad" chili. We ordered the fries with the chili on the side:

M6EpqqB.png

6xmLrgq.png

I didn't take a photo of the menu and I can't find the current lounge menu online. They've definitely changed a few things, but these were waffle fries with queso cheese and crumbled queso fresco with chili and green onions ($12). This was a large portion, as you can probably tell, and the fries were perfectly cooked and crispy with a nice battered texture to the outside of the fry. I noted that they were like the outside texture of an Arby's curly fry, albeit without the spice. I thought the chili was pretty good too! I don't know that it was spicy enough for me to want a bowl of to eat on its own, but it was definitely good on the fries - hearty and beefy.

yCGn0C6.png

We also ordered the bison burger:

sOt64qj.png

Which is on the menu at the quick serve window. "Bacon, tillamook cheddar, sweet onion straws, lettuce, tomato, garlic aioli, and marionberry barbecue sauce served on an artisan roll" ($14). We asked for no onion straws and no barbecue sauce. The sauce came on the side anyway so we got to try it.

KbKR1Fh.png

Let's just take a moment to observe the magnificence. This burger was really, really good in my opinion. We didn't have to wait too long on the food so we got a delicious, fresh, perfectly cooked burger with tons of crisp bacon and fresh tomato and lettuce. The bun was a tad dry, but that was easily remedied by applying some aioli (which also came on the side). The cheddar also had a nice bold flavor and everything that we had on our burger worked well together, flavor-wise. This is the best quick service burger on property in my opinion, better than D-Luxe and only bested by the Boathouse and Crew's Cup (if they still have a burger...?). The barbecue sauce that came on the side was more of a fruit sauce, which would have been good on a donut but I was glad it wasn't on our burger.

a0jbjQe.png

For round two, I had the Bourbon & Strawberry Sour – Bulleit Bourbon, fresh Lemon Juice, Strawberry Puree, and Sweet-and-Sour topped with Sprite ($12). Again, this was really refreshing and not too sweet. R had another Space Dust. I greatly enjoyed my strawberry bourbon concoction and would have had another if we weren't ready to move along with our day. Our total for two rounds of drinks, the nachos and the burger was $70.82. I just wish that they took TIW.

Overall, I think the changes are fine. While I know folks are lamenting the loss of the Salmon BLT sandwich, I don't eat salmon anyway and appreciate the addition of the chili cheese fries. I hope that Geyser Point continues to offer new and different specialty cocktails, rotating small plates, and focusing on seasonally fresh foods.

Thanks for the Geyser Point review. I was thinking about checking it out for lunch last trip but never did. The burger looks great and I enjoy eating & drinking :drinking1outside in a great setting. Will have to check the menu when we go back.
Due to the time of year I don't see the Festival of the Arts in our plans. I give you and R kudos for going back in the evening . I think my ( & DH's) response would be let's go to Disney Springs or grab an ADR.

Thanks for doing the super fast reviews. Always love to read the festival reviews to feel like I was there and tasting the food. This may be one of the few times I’m glad I wasn’t there and my wallet even gladder :dogdance: I always love reading your reports.

Thanks Melinda for the reviews, Andi and I are planning on trying Gyser point or Roaring Fork in February so your review gives us some good info.

We will be at Epcot for the last couple days of the Festival of Arts so good to know your thoughts. The prices are crazy for the bite size amounts. I think I will try the dessert in Italy and maybe the deconstructed Reuben. Sorry the Festival was overall a bust for you all.

We enjoyed so many dishes last year, so give the festival a chance! We should have revisited some favorites. We went to Roaring Fork after Geyser Point and picked up some magic cookie bars! :thumbsup2 So maybe you ladies can try the best of both!

We are heading to WDW in a couple of weeks and have a list of things I want to try at Festival of the Arts. I think, like the Food & Wine Festival, these things are very rarely worth the money you pay but it does sound like your experience was mainly disappointing. I am hoping, since the majority of my 'must trys' are desserts and alcohol I might fare better :goodvibes

great review . I have heard that everything since opening has gotten better, as far as prices , it is still pretty comparable to Food and Wine. I will review when we get back in February

OMG THAT BAG OF MEAT!!!!!! I'm dying over here!!! :rotfl2:How did that go down in the planning meeting?? "Hey guys...I know this is gonna sound kinda nuts...but how about we put some meat in a bag and sell it for like $8??"

My parents were there all last week, and they were a bit disappointed by Festival of the Arts too. They never do the booths tho. They just thought it was "too much Disney art". I'm not sure what they were expecting???

We're planning to head down 1/12-1/20 next year, and although it's kind of a bummer about the food selections, it takes the pressure off to find an entire day to devote to checking it out.

Sorry I didn't get to see you! It was so crowded I don't think I would have noticed anyone in all the crowds.

This has to be the nastiest looking presentation of food ever. If I was just scrolling by and saw a picture of this the first thought wouldn't be food.

This looks good, although I agree with you that the price is way too high for what you're getting.

This plate looks so pretty, it's surprising it came from a food kiosk. I couldn't imagine waiting 13 minutes for the food to arrive. I feel like when you order from one of those you expect your food quickly. And it was freezing, standing around not moving makes it feel a lot colder.

This looks and sounds delicious.

I really wanted to try this place when I stayed at Wilderness Lodge. This looks really good and I definitely need to find my way over there at some point.

I'm sorry your food was a bust at Epcot. We didn't try any of the kiosks and just ate at the restaurants (reviews coming soon) Geyser Point looked great and definitely will be on our list of places to try in the future.

We will be heading to Disney in 10 days!!! Woo Hoo! I have not seen a ton of good reviews of the food at the festival. I think I will keep our Via Napoli reservation. I was thinking it would be silly to do both. but I think we will pick just a few foods to try...

I am going to go read your reviews from last year next!

First up, we have the Mixiote de Cordero, which translates roughly to "$9 bag of chewy lamb". Okay fine, it was actually Wrapped Slow Braised Lamb marinated in Tres Chiles Paste and Spices – $8.95. That bag of meat, looks soooo gross! I mean I guess it could be worth it if it was amazing... but blek

I would not order either dish again. My fiancé said it best: "Mexico, you fooled us again!" Except maybe it was a different F word. Possibly.
Sounds like Mexico was a bust!

YEAH!!!! Def getting this one!!!

Wow. That bag of meat. :crazy2:

The Reuben plate looked beautiful!

I am planning to go to the F&G this year. I have never done food kiosks at Disney before and was trying to tally up potential spending for it. I just about died when I made calculations, which included alcohol. I was curious what other people spent at these things, so I appreciated you included your feelings on that.

Hi. My name is Patrick. I miss the salmon BLT.

Yes, I am one of the lamenters (kinda rhymes with Dementors, no?) regarding the salmon BLT at Geyser Point. It was such a good sandwich, and a relative bargain by Disney standards. It came with the waffle fries (which are superb, I agree), but it was the ratio of salmon to bun and bacon that made it a superstar. For a time, I was told, you could still order one since they kept salmon in the kitchen for the salmon bialy they made at breakfast. Well, no more actual breakfast at GP now, so I'm guessing that means not much likelihood of them doing a salmon BLT, either. Don't get me wrong; I like burgers and I think bison meat is excellent. But, often I don't want a heavy burger, and the salmon was a great option. Sigh. I'll try to stop dementi. . .err, lamenting about it. . .;)

We're nothing if not optimistic and persistent, so the next night we returned to Epcot to eat dinner at the festival. First up was my most-anticipated item: Frose in France.

t80qhPo.png

We enjoyed the Frose with the pork rillettes, which were served so cold that they were totally solid inside an adorable plastic "can" container.

Frosé is like my most favorite drink in the world, so I was a little disappointed in this one (get those peaches outta there!) ... My favorite is the version at Hurricane Hannah's! It's rosé, Tito's and strawberry puree! Super delicious.

Geyser Point looks so amazing and that view is so relaxing. That is a shame about the Festival of the Arts offerings :(

Sounds like the FOA booths are hit and miss, and those price tags! Yikes! That bag of meat just looks nasty. WTH were they thinking? I'm kinda sad Geyser Point has host/hostess seating now. Does that mean you can't just grab a drink and go sit out where the chairs are looking at the water? We've eaten there twice now, and loved it both times.

The opened bag of meat looks like a dirty diaper. :lmao: Not what I would call “artistic.”

I will be (God willing) at the Flower & Garden Festival this spring and will try the La Vie en Rose which I think is the one you got at the Arts.

Gotta love those French slushies at Epcot. The LePassion turned out to be my favorite drink at the 2017 F&W, thanks in part to your review, Melinda. I would have skipped it because I didn’t care for the 2016 version, but yours looked so good. :)

Sorry for being AWOL for a while, guys. Stinking wedding planning and work taking up all my Disboards time!

Crowd: "HIIIIIII PATRICK" :wave2: haha. I definitely wasn't meaning that folks were lamenting the loss of the BLT in a negative way. There are many dishes I have loved and lost that I am still mourning (I'm looking at you, Kona Cafe... bring back my Samoan!) and I totally get wanting a lighter sandwich. I am just a plebeian who cannot acquire a taste for salmon no matter how hard I try!

Frosé is like my most favorite drink in the world, so I was a little disappointed in this one (get those peaches outta there!) ... My favorite is the version at Hurricane Hannah's! It's rosé, Tito's and strawberry puree! Super delicious.
Can I admit something? I've never had "real" Frosé... :duck:so I really liked this one, but also understand that it's not really Frosé as much as it is a nice peach frozen cocktail! I am going to have to be on the look out for the strawberry version... I can't recall whether Hurricane Hannah's is inside the security perimeter of Stormalong Bay, though I'm sure a good Frosé is worth sneaking in for

Geyser Point looks so amazing and that view is so relaxing. That is a shame about the Festival of the Arts offerings :(
I know... but I have heard so many later good reviews of the Festival of the Arts I am starting to wonder if I was just being too harsh. Nevertheless looking forward to my favorite festival starting soon... Flower and Garden!

Uh yeah... the Mexico booth winning again! haha. You cannot just seat yourself at the waterside tables and chairs any more, but there are some tables that are free/open seating between Geyser Point and the backside of the stupid newly opened salon. I sort of suspect you can easily get a table near the water most of the time anyway because it's either freezing or broiling in Orlando with no in between!
The opened bag of meat looks like a dirty diaper. :lmao: Not what I would call “artistic.”

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

The dirty diaper is right! I am laughing so hard. The La Vie en Rose is different from the slush they were serving at the Festival of the Arts, but both are really good! I think the La Vie en Rose is my favorite because it has the St. Germain in it. Bring on the French slushies!!! Trying them all for science. And then trying them again for fun ::yes::
