Hi! Dh and i are doing a 7 night trip early fall with park hoppers. We have always had the dining plan but this time we are skipping it. I really feel like i can do this OOP for cheaper! Any tips/ great deals? We are planning to do every park and Disney Springs. Its been 4 yearsish since we've been. DH is a big eater, me, not so much. Ohana's i will book for our last night. Thanks!

I haven’t done the dining plan and we end up eating cheaper.

We bring breakfast and eat in the room.

Don’t buy soda/drinks in the park. Yes it’s a pain to carry water but it saves a lot of money!

A lot depends on how you like to eat. My mom and I tend to be light eaters and we split a lot of meals. Typically, we'll have breakfast and then split counter service meals for lunch and dinner and split a snack or two. If we have a table service meal, we will split an appetizer and a meal. Neither one of us eats dessert.

We always pay OOP and I keep all receipts. Once I tally everything up, we only spend about half of what the DDP would cost our family. This has been consistent every trip. Here is what we do:

~Bring water into the park and take advantage of free ice water at CS restaurants
~We aren't big soda drinkers but kids can have a soda if they order a kid's meal (mainly applies to my teens), otherwise it's water
~We all love to snack so we either share an adult meal or order from kid's menu (kid's meals are plenty of food if we plan to grab a Mickey bar two hours later)
~No desserts at meals, we snack plenty
~We even share snacks (other than things like Mickey bars).
~We eat mostly CS (we are not foodies so food is perfectly fine for us). For a 10-night stay, we may eat 2-3 TS meals. Saves a bundle!
~Breakfast in the room from foods we brought from home.

We've had the dining plan a couple of times (once when it was free and once when it was part of a discounted team package). The rest of our trips we've paid for dining OOP. We are big water drinkers, so I second what everyone has said about bringing your own water bottles to the parks. We also often eat breakfast in our room or condo, not so much to save money (which it does) but to save time. My family is not big on sharing meals or snacks. They are much too territorial for that! To save money on dining, we pay for all our food with discounted Disney gift cards, which we buy ahead of time. There are lots of different ways to get discounted Disney gift cards. Our preferred method (easiest and gives us the biggest bang for the buck) is to buy the cards at Kroger when they offer 4x fuel points. With 4 drivers in our household, this gives us the biggest savings.

We have gone using the dinning plan and not for others. I figured up the numbers for us that are going this year and we will be saving around $300 not buying the dining plan. Of course this does mean that we will not be eating as many snacks but sometimes on the DP you are somewhat forced to eat more.

We haven't done the dining plan since we had kids under 10 and I know we come out ahead. I have run the numbers and counted it every which way and cannot make it make sense for us, even with a teenager that eats everything not nailed down. On our trip last summer, every time we ate QS meals (which was most of them), we got 2 soft drinks and 2 waters. I almost always had water because I prefer it, but I would sometimes have a sip of my husband's soft drink. Sometimes when it was very hot, we got 4 waters and 2 soft drinks. We stopped in at QS places just to get the cups of water, too. We usually carry a few bottles of water each day, but as we drink them, then we buy the Dasani or get the cups from a QS. Another way we saved some money was by sharing fries. I like good French fries as much as the next person, but Disney fries are just so-so to me, so I would usually just order my entrée without fries. It saved a couple of bucks every time. I would mooch a few from each of my guys, and that was plenty. At least once I ordered a burger without fries and they were still in the basket when we got our food. We also share snacks a lot. The kids would get Dole whips and I'd eat a few bites of each one (they're used to me taking the "mom tithe" as I call it, lol, whether it's at Disney or Chick-Fil-A). We made good use of the refillable popcorn bucket during our week there. At the resort, we bought 2 refillable mugs for the 4 of us. One of us would go down to the food court and fill them up, and we shared back in the room. I will say that when it comes to entrees at both QS and TS restaurants, everyone gets their own. We don't share the main course. The afore-mentioned teenager, his brother the preteen (gaining on him in the food-eating department) and my husband are all big eaters. We do splurge every now and then, too. The boys got milkshakes at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater (I got my obligatory sip of each). Our most expensive meal of the week was at the Trail's End buffet, but we agreed it was worth every penny. The teenager actually left FULL, and the food was really good. It was less expensive than most of the other buffets on property at $30 each for dinner. I wound up cancelling our other TS meal we had planned at Via Napoli because we changed our plans for which park on which day, but that's another one of our favorites for being fairly inexpensive. One of the $40 pizzas usually feeds all 4 of us. If you read the menus and prices (I use allears.net) you can usually figure out what you might expect to spend at each restaurant, and choose the ones that are less expensive.

The last time we went (2013, our kids were 10 and 12) we didn’t use a dining plan. We didn’t consciously try to save money on food but we ended up paying less than if we used the plan. The freedom to eat just an appetizer and a dessert if I wanted to was what appealed to me. And we ended up eating more snacks in the parks because we weren’t stuffed from the meals.

I saw on YouTube that water is free in the restaurants. Not sure if it still is, but you can bring a nice bottle and load up on water. Sugary drinks make me thirsty in the heat. Love Coke and Pepsi but it's too much in hot weather. Any good options for light or healthy fare at wdw? I plan to indulge in the sweets and some French and Cajun cuisine, and beaches and cream has my name on it, but I also want to eat healthy. I prefer light foods when it's hot. It's like I'm a baby lol. Too much rich food sits there when I'm overheated and I don't want the kids bouncing off the castle walls when we go because they're oded on sugar.

I am not keen on going up to a QS location and asking for water mainly because we just take a sip and close our bottles and I make ours full of ice and then Add water so we have cold water, not sure how much if any ice they put in the QS location. Just really more of a hassle for us. I have thought about filling up at the resort at the drink stations but again a hassle, when we walk out our door in the morning, we are walking to a monorail, boat or bus, no stops.

We like the sunshine food terrace in the land. DH and I will split a salad from there and Wolfgang pucks.

My trick is that I eat a late lunch and then a light dinner. Lunch prices are often cheaper for the same food that you can get at dinner, so if you can eat a big meal at 3 or 4 and then have something small later for dinner, it can be a good way to save some cash.

Many of the QS meals are large enough IMO to be shared. My husband and I could easily order one meal and maybe an extra side, and be plenty full. We typically eat a light breakfast (fruit, granola bars, yogurt) in our room, which saves on both money and time. I also agree with others who suggested getting water to drink. Not only is it free, but also imperative to stay hydrated in the FL heat. Finally, if you want to experience any character meals, stick to breakfast as that seems to be the cheapest meal option.

We did the dining plan last time cause we were traveling with friends and I thought it would stop the drama of who's paying and it just turned out to be a nightmare for us of "how many credits do you have vs. how many does she have left" and this upcoming trip we're traveling with a different group and we won't be doing it again. I'm getting a tables in wonderland card and using AP discounts We're big foodies so definitely a TS for dinner almost every night sans our universal day, and probably one or two TS breakfasts. I put the money away usually on Disney gift cards before hand and we don't really feel it when the check comes.

Yeah it's a pain to keep asking for water. I think we'll get some on Amazon prime and snacks so we keep the costs down. How about filling up a milk jug and freezing it overnight?

Do either of you have birthdays between now and then? Ask for Starbucks GCs. You can use them at WDW.

We buy water bottles to take in also but we hit the park at RD and usually don't leave until they close so taking that many water bottles in for 6 people is just too much. When we were there last Sept, a lot of the CS places actually had a tray filled with cups of water just sitting over to the side. They wanted people to just walk up and get what they needed.

That's a good idea. Much faster and saves money on drinks.

Yes! By eating lunch earlier you avoid crowds. I've heard for dinner, it should be later and not earlier. Avoiding 6 - 6:30 pm times. We've never done the dining plan. My husband and I don't "watch" what we spend on food/dining on vacation. It's the one time we "splurge" a little. I found as my husband and I get older, we don't each as much. For our next trip I only made ADR's for dinner. I plan on eating lighter for lunch (or else just snack thru it..yum!). Many times I split with my daughter who doesn't eat all that much either.
