Headache / Sinus Infection Relief

I have this all the time, it pains me every where. I take advil and put a wash cloth on my face and neck and use a humidifyer. Face pain is the worst. And try to use your thumbs to rub above your eyes to drain the area and sleep a little upwards on pillows for the stuff to drain.

I might go and get some excedrin. I'm hoping the antibiotics helps. The doctor thought it was viral and turned bacterial since it hadn't gone away and my sinuses aren't flushing well.

Any tips for massaging my neck myself? I'd go get a hydromassage at the gym, or even splurge for a real one but I can't lay down while awake at all.

Neti pot was my first thought. I've had the same issue with it not coming out the other side. Have you tried warming the distilled water?

As for how to massage your own neck, try something like a Theracane or a Back Buddy. I have the Theracane and it's amazing for working out your own neck pain. I also have Magnesium oil on hand and spray that on my neck or temples and it does wonders for headaches. It's like a liquid version of Epsom salt

I’ve heard taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen with caffeine helps. So this makes sense. Excedrin has both a pain reliever and caffeine.
I never take Excedrin. I prefer my caffeine cold over ice. ;)

OP, if these things aren't working, you can alternate both ibuprofen and acetaminophen up to the max allowable dose of each daily. Ibuprofen works at the site of the pain. Acetaminophen works on the brain's perception of pain. They work very well in tandem when one or the other isn't cutting it.

Excedrin makes my vision so blurry I can barely function. Fun side effect I found out the hard way.

Lots of gargling with apple cider vinegar... mix it 50/50 with water and gargle away, then spit. The vinegar absorbs into your sinus tissues and helps break up the congestion.

Advil cold and sinus is the only thing that works for me. If its bad I take 2, if it isn't then I
take 1 and 1 regular advil.
I also drink peppermint or a spicy chai tea when I have a headache. My friend says to make a ginger tea because that works the best but I have never tried it.
Dh swears by Excedrin for Migraines. I think it has more caffeine than regular Excedrin.

Manually drain your sinuses using acupressure. Seriously. It doesn't feel good when you do it, but you will experience relief within a couple hours if you've done it correctly. There are youtube videos to show where the pressure points are and how long to hold them.

I currently have a very bad sinus infection. For me it's been lots of water, garlic, chai tea with honey, chicken broth, 800 mg motrin, lots of rest, a very hot shower right before bed, cold mist humidifier, and lots of prayers to get better. Hope you feel better soon OP. I'm on day 15 with this now. Think I'm going to add in the Benadryl tonight.

Definitely Flonase, and a nasal rinse kit. I like the Neil Med one. Have you taken any Benadryl? That usually does a good job at drying up congestion.

Since Monday, I've been getting insane headaches that are almost worse than my two week migraine last fall I had. Monday night I was laying in bed shaking, plus I was super sore for two days.

Those symptoms have gone away but the pain, it is horrible. I went to see the doctor and they are thinking sinus infection since I was having sinus pain for about a week before, and a lot of the pain is in the front of my head/face.

The antibiotics, ibuprofen, musinex is not doing anything to assist the headache part.

Looking for suggestions from other Dis'ers. I can't even lay down and close my eyes to get away, it makes it even worse. I pretty much had to sit and not move my head an inch. Tried a hot shower too and nothing.

Any oils etc to try? I'm literally desperate. I see my primary care doctor mid week.
Do you have YL oils? I’d try cedarwood, tea tree, lavender, peppermint...

+1 vote for Netti pot. It killed my sinus whenever i used it. As for not coming out on the other end, it could be how you seal the tip to the nose... i had an issue with that too, i couldnt push the water out, i ended up holding it tighter and tilting my head more and now it goes through well. It clears my nose and make me breeeeath!

use the salt too.

This is a long shot, but could you possibly have shingles? Several years ago I thought I got bit by a spider, I had this itchy bump on my back. But then I got this terrible, mind-numbing headache. For days. Nothing would relieve my pain. I was so incredibly sensitive to light I had to wear my sunglasses all the time and shower in the dark. I finally went to the doctor for the headache and made a mention of the spider bite. He asked to see it and instantly knew I had shingles.

I almost never take over the counter medicine. - I just don't feel like they work all that well and I don't like putting stuff in my body for no reason, however for sinus headaches I take Advil sinus/cold and it always takes away the headache in about 20 mins or so, so if you haven't tried that I'd start there.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. My headache seems to have broken last night. I took the sudafed, and about an hour later it made me sick a bit. But after that, my headache slowly faded away. Not sure how it all happened, but I gladly accepted being sick to make it go away so I could get some sleep. If it is a bacterial infection, I think the antibiotics are kicking in too. I've switched back to Tylenol because the ibuprofen was killing my stomach. Going to grab some of the advil cold and flu in case it comes back. I'll try the netti pot again. He said it might not have been working because it was so clogged up there.

Here's my tried and true remedy.

Boil a big pot of water and throw in a few tea bags, put some Vicks vapor cream around your sinuses, lean over the pot with the pot and your head covered with a towel and breathe in the steam for as long as you can.

I don't think the tea does much except making the steam more pleasant to breathe in.

Make sure you have lots tissues available.

Hope you feel better soon.
