Here is a question for some of you math whizzes (or your kids.) :teacher: :teeth:

This is too much for my aging brain to figure out. I had promptly forgot how to do this once the final exam was over back in high school. :p

I need to make an isosceles right triangle, (equal short sides,) the hypotenuse is 60 inches. How long are the 2 sides?

Square root of 30 inches.

I don't know how to to exponents on this keyboard, so imagine them:

A2 + B2 = C2

In this case, A=B, so 2A2= C2

2A2 = 60
A2 = 30
A = square root of 30

Square root of 30 inches.

In this case, A=B, so 2A2= C2

2A2 = 60
A2 = 30
A = square root of 30

You need to square the 60 too - 2a^2 = 3600, a^2 = 1800, a = sqrt1800 which is 30sqrt2

An Icosoles right triangle has two equal sides of X length and a hypotneuse of X times the square root of two.

X times the square root of two = 60 inches.

So dividing both sides by the square root of two yields
x = 60 divided by the square root of two and that
is about 42.43.

You need to square the 60 too - 2a^2 = 3600, a^2 = 1800, a = sqrt1800 which is 30sqrt2

You're right! I was thrown off trying to type exponents. I know better than to hurry through math problems.

And just to put out a view from the other side--I love math. I live for math. I'm an electrical engineer (lots of math there).

I'm a geometry teacher - I spend all day answering "when are we ever going to need this?"

Students have no idea what they're going to do in life, so how do they know whether they'll need the information or not?

I spend a LOT of time saying you're 14-15 years old, you have no idea what you're doing tomorrow, let alone 10 years from now... but they ASSURE me, it will have nothing to do with math. :rotfl2:

Here is my take on math
Understanding fractions is important
understanding the proper way to calculate % is very important and 80% of population would fail. My wife worked in HR and called me with % questions all the time.
Geometry is used in many construction fields
Understanding how to calculate time value of money is extremely important, and most can't
Calculus is worthless for anyone other than engineers, and it only needs to be understood
Upper level algebra is totally worthless in the days with computers

You will definitely need to know how to do this if you ever have to build or repair a staircase! Rise over run, those are fun angles when you have an uneven flooring surface!
