Gulf State Park Dismeet 2018: Sand, Sun, and Puzzles...

Good luck randy. It rained a bit here but not horrible. I worked but we did retro fit the lights we had to led and fixed our toilet. Also did some cleaning and checked out a local park for some running.

Hope everyone stays safe. We would be bugging out too if we were there.

Forgot to add making asparagus tonight with some pork chops.

Randy while the presence Mike Siedel is not quite as ominous as Jim Cantore in a potential storm track considering he is in GULF SHORES ALA now I will urge you exercise good judgement and caution. Based on map the Weather Channel had up looks you could likely start to see major impacts starting early tomorrow after noon well into Monday

Grumpy Aggie(Arnold) has decided we will be heading back to Texas in the AM. We were to stay until 5/31. Ed & Lisa so sorry we missed saying our good-by's, but safe than sorry. We have enjoyed these few days & the hospitality last night!! Your cooking Ed, was great. We are heading to Tiggerdad's site tonight to for supper.

We are back home. Easiest drive yet home from the beach.

Gloria, I left a note in your trailer door crack. I hope you or Arnold found it. I wanted to call but didn't have either cell.

Yeah this morning when we started the puzzle, Sunday didn't look bad. After we got back from running into town around lunchtime, Sunday had gusts of 33-37mph. Remember I'm in a popup that weighs barely 2,000# on a site across from an open body of water across from the ocean. It can get pretty gusty there (have camped at site #4 with gusts in the 20s and it was disconcerting).

Monday was the kicker with gusts forecasted as of lunchtime today of 58mph. It made my decision of when easy. I could have tried to stay till tomorrow morning but didn't want to chance it and leave in a long line of cars headed north along with me. I had a half tank when I started but needed a few more gallons and the gas station in Bay Minette I stop at before getting on I65 had the gas pumps on SUPER SLOW. I guess to prevent people from filling up and causing a shortage. Anyway, I got home with 85 miles to empty according to my dashboard.

More later tonight but I am gonna grab some Domino's and come back and watch a little tv and post some pix.

Loved meeting the "new" folks in person and wish I could have visited longer with you. Guess that means you'll have to come back next year? :confused3 (shameless plug).

Ed

EDIT: per Accuweather tonight tomorrow during the "Day" there will be gusts up to 34mph. Tomorrow "Night" gusts up to 52mph. Monday during the "Day" gusts up to 59mph and Monday "Night" gusts up to 66mph. I suggest everyone head out tomorrow.

Well actually today was a pretty nice day in the morning. We had a shower pass over about 430am but it passed and about 730am I set up the table and pulled out the puzzle. While I was flipping pieces all right side up and separating out the straight edges and corners, Tiggerdad walked over. I kept flipping and he started edging. It didn't take him long to get it all framed out for us.

Next PaHunter and DW/Jen came by (I think they wondered if we were serious about this whole "puzzle" thing). But they did come with a banana bread all chilled and sliced. It went down well with a Diet Coke. Pretty soon they were sucked in, pulled up a chair, and started putting pieces in.

Flametamr also pedaled up and we had it goin'. I took a third picture when we stopped for the morning but for some reason that one didn't turn out.

Later that morning PaHunter and DW rode with me and Lisa into town and checked out the public beach where 59 meets the Beach Hwy. It's been turned into a very nice park and the beach was nice and wide and sunny and clean. We walked to the water's edge and then back to the car. Rode out west and showed them the Little Lagoon. No stop in Gulf Shores is complete without a stop at Souvenir City "Since 1956" (the souvenir shop with the big shark's mouth for a doorway). Then a stop at WalMart before heading back to Gulf.

By now it was quite breezy at lunchtime and I checked the forecast and decided to bug out. People were still checking in but we were headed out. Although it not their normal policy, due to the weather conditions Gulf refunded the pre-payment I had made for the nights remaining that I cancelled. In fact, they had a lot of cancellations due to the weather on Friday (site #5 next to me was empty and normally Gulf would be packed on a holiday weekend).

Tropical Storm Alberto's track is slipping east and should come ashore near Pensacola just to the east of Gulf Shores. That's still close in my book.

I wished the weather had turned out differently.

Later. See ya'll in 2019.

ED

Yes, thank you for the note & glad your trip went great! We were worried something had happened & it did - the storm. As I said earlier we will be leaving in the AM. Not sure where we will stop tomorrow & arrive home on Monday. If God willing & the creek don't rise, we will meet again next year. Hope to run into someone at the Fort in mid Nov. & into Dec. If you wish, you can get Arnold's cell # from Tiggerdad. I had meant to give you our info, but too busy visiting & forgot.
Tell Lisa hello & enjoyed our visit.

Had our 2ND (and regrettably last) Dismeet dinner this evening. The weather was great again. Cool breeze blowing in off the Gulf and only a little rain right at dark.

Arnold and Gloria brought ribs (tell your son we said thanks). They were great. Dry rub seasoning and slow-cooked. Chris and Jen brought pierogi (hoping I got that right) and onions with hot dogs for the kids. Great to try a new food, and it was very good. Gotta get me the recipe Chris. Joe brought grilled corn which goes well with anything. I cooked up some beans and apples on the grill. There were assorted desserts as well.

No pics as for some reason I forgot.

We had good conversations. Various subjects came up. The usual joking about that you would expect when you have various college sports team fans involved. There was truck discussion, camper discussion, lots of Disney discussion, apologies for the weather, and @SouthAlabama5er holding hands with strange people on the Tower of Terror (it sounds better to hear Ashley tell the story).

We had competition where each of us took turns hitting one another claiming to be "swatting yellow flies". Patrick and Randy broke out a "salt gun" for shooting flies and it was quality entertainment from there on out.

We finished out evening getting Randy packed back up and watching Weather Channel.

I'll pull out sometime tomorrow. Storm is now projected further east which is good but still not good traveling weather so I'm gonna try and head out ahead of worst of it.

Pepper has done really well on her first camping trip.

Ed mentioned Souvenir City. We had to go as well.

Well, I'll sneak in some goodbyes in the morning and wish all safe travels home.

Just had to throw that in there @tiggerdad , it was very dark on ToT.

We really enjoyed meeting @PaHunter and his wife, @FriendsOfEeyore & @grumpyaggie. I hate the weather played us this hand, hopefully yall will joy us here again next year, same time, same place. @BamaEd glad to know that you made it home safely and I hate I missed the puzzle this morning, I slept in, way in. Dinner both nights was excellent thank you to everyone who pitched in, next we will be having some seafood for sure.

Safe travels to those that are heading out in the morning, we are packed and ready to hunker down here.

It might be us :)

Sorry the weather didn't cooperate. I can imagined how disappointed everyone is.

Hey guys. All packed up and ready to make the 40 minute drive to GSP. If anyone is out and about, can you tell me if site 489 (canal pull thru site on Live Oak) is occupied? Want to try to come down early if it is empty. Please do not make a special trip. Just excited to get there.

Looks like this storm might move further east and we might dodge the worst of it. Anxious to put the new camper through its paces. Be safe all!

You are good to go

Have to add my thanks to all who cooked or brought food. Everything tasted great. I always love the round robin conversations. It's good to see everyone's love of Disney and camping.

For those leaving I wish you a safe trip home and hope to see you next year. It was great to meet the new people and we hope you return. It will be bigger and better. I would like to pursue the idea of trying to do this at the Fort one year. I think we could make it happen. If we used a travel agent we could possibly get a group discount and all get on one loop.

The weather reports this morning are promising and show the storm making land fall farther east. Which is the best we could hope for. I'm definitely going home this afternoon but if it contiues to look better I will leave my camper and truck in place and return Tueday morning and finish out the week camping.

DisneyDadof5 post when you arrinve and I will ride down and welcome you.

DisneyDadOf5, you might consider switching sites closer in. Dont k ow how familiar you are with this campgrounds but the canal is exposed to a lot of high breeze and sun. Also no bathhouse close if you use them. A lot of people canceled or will be leaving early today. A nice open site may be 5. You are wrlcome to send me a pm with any questions. See ya real soon.
