September Crowds

This is our first time going in mid September. We usually go late September/early October. Our dates happen to be during Yom Kippur this year. Are schools closed for that holiday? I've read about Rosh Hashanah and the parks being a bit more crowded but have not read about other holidays in September effecting crowds. Any idea if parks are more crowded?

I'm in New York and our schools have 9/10-11 off, as well as 9/19. However, school doesn't start until 9/5. I'm guessing most people with school-aged children don't think to take their kids out the second week.

Crowds aren't really affected. And generally in mid September, crowds are light. Be advised. It is hurricane season.

Yes, even though hurricane season lasts a while, the hurricanes LOVE mid Aug-Mid Sept. That is the sweet spot for hurricanes.

Will Disney refund any non-refundable purchases, like MNSSHP tickets, if you don't have travel insurance? I figure it'll go like most things, if you ask nicely you might have luck.

If Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah happen to coincide with other holidays then it would be busier but it's not busier just based off of those holidays, as the vast majority of schools do not observe them as days off. September has become more popular across the board, but now people are a bit more skittish because of hurricanes.

Our favorite time to go to Disney is September. Crowds are low and wait times minimal on most attractions. We’ve gone more years than I can count in September and have never been affected by a hurricane. It came close last year...we missed it by one week! Try not to stress about it. No amount of worrying will change anything. Enjoy the anticipation of a Disney World vacation!! Chances are you’ll be fine!

Based on the number of offers and discounts for September right now, I would think that low crowds are expected. We are going the third week and have been able to book great rates with our Passholder discount.

We have been going first week of Sep for years and love it . 30 min wait times are as we say a walk on and that's how we find it that week . The big winds have never got us . How ever friends went last year , ( we missed because of time in the hospital ) they did have to stay at Pop for two days , however they still had a great time and got a gift card for the trouble .

Im going in sept too for the first time and im a little nervous about hurricanes as well. however we went last august and august is also hurricane season. we are prepared however if we have to cancel

Just curious where you booked with AP rate? Most of what I saw was the same as the regular room only public rate.... except maybe CBR... but that's because of all the construction. Moving to CBR from CSR would only save us about $180 and so not worth the aggravation of construction.
September used to be a great month for low crowds, but we've seen it increase steadily over the last few years.

We are going Sept. 22-29 and looked into travel insurance. Basically I was told that WDW would have to completely shut down for the entire length of our stay to have it pay out. If a storm comes through, it would most likely shut down the parks for a day at most so we will just be taking the risk.

Disney world has been seen 1380 September days. It has closed to hurricanes on 6 September days. So historically speaking, the park has closed in September for about 0.4% of its days. For us that risk is well worth the cost savings and crowd savings.
:) I am impressed with your research. How many other days has WDW closed? For hurricanes in other months? or other events... like 9-11 and such?

September Hurricane closures as follows:
  • September 15, 1999 – Hurricane Floyd
  • September 4-5, 2004 – Hurricane Frances
  • September 26, 2004 – Hurricane Jeanne
  • September 10-11, 2017 - Hurricane Irma
WDW also closed October 7, 2016 for Hurricane Matthew. (I didn't include this in the estimate since it was October. If you include October days the overall percentage goes

The dates above are when WDW did not open at all.

The parks opened on 9/11 but closed early. I believe some of the parks closed early on September 9, 2017 (but after 5pm).
