Life After Marathons: A Running/barre3/Coffee/Life Journal

I haven't seen it in action, but I'm not a fan of the idea. I'm also not a fan of the "speed up the pace of play" stuff ... I like the occasional 4 hour game (or as a Yankees fan ... not so occasional). I haven't really been paying much attention to what Rob Manfred has been proposing, but I'm too stubborn to want the game to change much in general. I'm still not a fan of this 1-game wild card play-in thing.
Extra innings should remain the way it currently is. The runner on second base will drain so much of the drama of the game. 2014 featured a divisional series game between the Giants and Nationals that went something like 18 innings. So much drama and tension in that game would have been lost with the stupid runner on second idea.

As far as pace of play goes, a 3 hour game isn't so bad. A 4 hour 9 inning game is a bit excessive. Reducing interruptions such as frequent visits to the mound, the pitch clock which basically means you can't stand around and take 2 minutes before looking at the catcher to get the signals can help the game. But I'm most concerned they'll do something really stupid like destroy the strategy of the game by implementing the DH in the National League too.

Sounds busy but fun. And I'm seeing the Giants tonight ... but I'll be rooting for their opponents :)
That ending last night was a very 2018 Mets way to end it.

Nice! Which team does it better?
Some will argue that I'm biased as a Giants fan, but I think it's the Giants and I give them that edge because they handle the giveaways so much better than the A's. Both teams have fun Star Wars graphics during the at bats, both teams do a nice job of having between innings Star Wars activities and both teams have great Star Wars fireworks shows when they offer them.

But giveaways are a different story. The Giants may have 2 giveaways. 1 to the first say 20,000 fans (this has included a Chewbacca Giants bobblehead and a BB-8 Giants stocking hat) and a second item available only to fans who purchase the special event ticket (this has included a Giants themed baseball with Madison Bumgarner as a Jedi Knight fighting Darth Vader, a Wookiee of the Year Chewbacca bobblehead, a BB-8 Giants POP Funko, and a Giants Millennium Falcon t-shirt in the games I've gone to). The Giants have a designated area where the special event items can be picked up and clearly communicate where that area is and when pickup is.

The A's have chaos. One game you had to go through a special gate to get the item. If you didn't go through that gate you did not get the item even if you paid for the special event ticket. Another time their website said that the special event bobblehead would be mailed to you, but they were giving them out at the game at a predesignated area, but only a handful of stadium personnel had any idea what was going on.

Both have nice giveaway items (t-shirts, bobbleheads, etc.) but the Giants have much better organization at giving them out. The Giants always follow the same procedure for every single game no matter what the game. The A's appear to change the procedure and do not clearly communicate how to pick up the item that comes with your ticket.

Thanks!

I think it's a scale of 1-100. I assume it has something to do with heart rate, but I'm actually not sure...

I first heard about it because I heard someone mention that Dogfish Head makes a Chocolate Lobster beer. Then I looked up Blue Point and saw that they make an Oyster beer. I can't decide if it's brilliant or weird ... but either way, I can't have them.

Agreed!

I need to adopt that attitude. Clearly not caring much works wonders for stress - who knew?

Chocolate Lobster Beer :crazy2:
Oyster Beer :crazy2:

I’m what? 10+ years older than you? Give it more time for the I don’t give a crap attitude to mature :snooty:. My MIL cracks me up with how much she just doesn’t care anymore. She’s going to be 80yo in December! Between her not having any craps to give and losing the filter on her mouth she’s a wild card. You never know what you will get with her :rotfl2: She’s awesome though. I love that woman so much.

Agreed. While I wouldn't want it to happen too often, I love it when games occasionally go very long, and starting with someone on second kills that.
I remember that 2014 game - that was crazy.

When I went to the Cyclones a few weeks ago, the game was 2:07. It was so short.
I don't mind some speeding up of the game, but with some games, the time is part of the strategy. I can't imagine a Red Sox-Yankees game that isn't around 4 hours, and that's exactly what MLB is trying to do - reduce the time-related strategies in a game between rivals. In fact, every press release seems to mention Yankees-Sox as a game that takes too long, and I actually love those games being long because it adds to the drama of the rivalry.

Interesting. I've never done a special ticket package, but you'd think they'd be able to figure out how to give away the special package giveaway. I've done lots of regular giveaways (for many years I went to games based on the giveaways ... I have many bobbleheads) and some teams are better organized than others.
I missed Aaron Judge Jedi bobblehead day this year because it was a Friday night, which is sad, because that would have been a good one to get.

Chocolate Lobster Beer :crazy2:
Oyster Beer :crazy2:

I've never had lobster or oyster, so I don't know if they'd go with beer, but I'm guessing you're not going looking for either of those beers anytime soon :)

This gives me something to look forward to. I'm very excited for the day when my reaction to everything is "nope, don't care at all."

Anyway ... life.
I'm eating all the chocolates today, more because I'm not in the mood to get things done than anything else. Light work drama, but hopefully nothing that affects me.
Sunday's 9 miler has been moved to Thursday, Thursday's 3 miler has been moved to Sunday and tentatively increased to 4 miles, and tomorrow's 4 miler is cancelled. Amtrak ticket to Philly has been booked. Trying to move Thursday's barre3 class to tomorrow, but there's an issue, so I'm waiting for them to call me back (I called when they were closed for lunch and left a message).
Also, listening to my Disney playlist now, with occasional breaks to watch this:

For those of you crying at work right now ... you're welcome.

I hate it when really cool and/or fun giveaways land on days where I can't attend. My little sister and I still like to decide games based on the giveaway item. We're considering Peanuts Night over Runners Night with the Giants this year because we like the giveaway item better and Runners Night may consist of the same bobblehead we're getting as part of the Giant Race.

The Giants have all sorts of special ticket packages. The special event item tickets are maybe $10-$15 higher than a regular ticket if you really want the special event item. They also Triples Alley VIP experiences which get you a pregame meal, drinks, dessert, and you are guaranteed to receive all giveaway items that day plus a special one only for VIP experience ticket holders.

This Saturday is the 2010 World Series reunion so my little sister and I decided to splurge on Triples Alley. We get the complete set of Buster Hugs bobbleheads plus a large paperweight replica of the 2010 World Series ring. For those who don't know, Buster Hugs became a thing in San Francisco after Buster Posey finished a lot of huge wins such as playoff series wins, World Series wins, a perfect game, and a no hitter by hugging the pitcher. So this Saturday, the first 35,000 fans receive either a Buster Posey bobblehead in the pose from right after they won the 2010 World Series or a Brian Wilson (their closer that year) bobblehead. Triples Alley attendees get both bobbleheads. There's also a pregame panel with former players from that team.

Some of the local minor league teams have deal like that (I don't think the Yankees do, but the Mets might). We were considering one for Harry Potter night at the Cyclones, but ultimately decided that the bobblehead wasn't worth the extra money to us.
That Triples Alley VIP package sounds good. Awesome that you're doing it for the 2010 WS reunion game ... lots of good giveaways! I didn't know Buster Hugs was a thing, but that's awesome.

Side Note: How do you feel about intentionally walking the batter without the pitcher actually having to throw the 4 pitches?
I've never been a huge fan of the IBB in general, but the way they do it now that the team basically just announces their intention to walk the guy and he just goes to first seems wrong - he should at least have to stand in the batter's box for a pitch in order for it to be considered a plate appearance!

So ... I called barre3 this AM before work and they said they'd put me on the waitlist for tonight's 6:30 class, but it's not showing up in my account. I don't have the time, patience, or caffeine/awakeness to deal with it, so I figured if I get a text saying I have a spot, I'll confirm it, but if not, no barre3 for me today. I was considering registering for the 5:15 class, but I don't want to cut out of work before 5:15 today, so no dice. If I don't go today, I'll keep tomorrow's spot and decide after my run if I want to go or not.

Also ... registration for my usual Turkey Trot opens after Labor Day. I don't know how I went from last year's "I don't know that I want to do it again" to looking at when registration opens. Probably because there's a medal.

Thinking about surprising Beth with cupcakes from Erin McKenna, but I don't know if/when I'll have time to go. I have to think about it. Just not now because my brain is exploding.

Send naps.

All the local races in my town are popping up now but I haven't seen anything about our annual Turkey Trot and I am getting worried. I really liked it last year because I got 2nd place in my age group without even really trying. Haha.

Send naps.
Seriously. Send some my way too. I only snoozed ONCE this morning.

They released this info late (and it's still not on the race management company's site, so I don't know if they're using a different race management co this year) ... maybe it's just something about Turkey Trots releasing info late this year. I hope you get your Turkey Trot info soon!

Seriously. Send some my way too. I only snoozed ONCE this morning.

I'll see what I can do. (I snoozed twice, but I also went to sleep later than I should have last night)

If we're sending stuff, please send me a cupcake :)

I'll see what I can do.

Hope you get into your class tonight!

Thanks!

Went out for a walk and coffee. Came back and head is exploding again.
Definitely not doing barre3 today, even if I get in. I might not even make it to 5 today. I just need to go home and sleep.*

*NOTE: I probably will not sleep when I get home. But at least whatever I do I can do in pajama pants.

Okay, update #30000000 of the day:

Something somewhere got screwed up with barre3 because not only do I see that the 6:30 class is open and I never got a waitlist notification, but my monthly subscription, which I asked them to move to starting today, still is starting tomorrow (I'm guessing they accidentally put it in someone with a similar name's account and that person was just very confused when they got a waitlist notification). Honestly, this is probably for the best. If I got into the class, I'd have gone, and I really just need to go home, chillax, and be in bed by 10 (okay, 10:30) tonight. I need the rest day today. (Probably shouldn't have eaten like it was long run day, though...)

Two people left my company this week. One is "pursuing other opportunities" because it's "in the best interest of all parties involved" and the other is leaving for a new job. I wasn't super close with either one, but things like this are very hard for me, for various reasons. Also, one of the people who left was one of the other female engineers, so now we're down to 3 of us in a heavily male department. Sigh. So anyway ... this week hasn't been great on the work front.

I'm trying not to put too much pressure in myself for tomorrow's run. 6 miles continuous, with 4 of those at HM pace (which as of right now is probably my goal pace for the Bronx 10 mile). If it goes well, awesome. If not ... there could be a lot of factors influencing that. I need to remember that tomorrow is not a make-or-break run.

Can I just wake up and have it be the weekend already???

I dream of attending Seinfeld night some year. That sounds like so much fun. The random fun thing for me about the Buster Hugs bobblehead is that it's kind of a sequel. Last year, my little sister wanted to attend the Buster Hugs blanket night so she could give the blanket to her best friend. When neither could attend, my little sister offered to pay for my ticket with the provision that I give her the blanket. Which I did.

So now this time, both my little sister and I are attending the game and we each get the giveaways. The Giants do some really good moment in time bobbleheads. In the 2014 playoffs, Hunter Pence made an insane catch against the fence in San Francisco. The bobblehead they made of that catch includes a mock fence as part of the backdrop. Likewise, the Joe Panik bobblehead they made from that insane double play in game 7 of the 2014 World Series has Panik on his side flipping the ball with his glove.

Side Note: How do you feel about intentionally walking the batter without the pitcher actually having to throw the 4 pitches?

I'm fine with it. 3 1/2 hour games is getting a bit ridiculous. I don't ever want baseball to have a clock since you can trail by 10 runs with 2 strikes and 2 outs in the 9th and it still isn't over. I like the idea of pace of play, but I don't want them to mess with strategy. Skipping 4 pitches doesn't really change strategy in my opinion.

So anyway ... this week hasn't been great on the work front.
I hope it gets better. Great news on the marathon front.

I haven't done Seinfeld night, but I saw the "Seinclones" jerseys they wore for it and I loved them. Maybe next year...
I love that this year you're both getting the Buster Hugs giveaway ... much better than having to give away your giveaway :). I'll have to look up pictures of those bobbleheads ... I like "moment in time" bobbleheads. Maybe I'll have to make it back to SF for a Giants bobblehead one day.

See, I love the long games. Maybe not every game, but I like the slower pace. But definitely agree on strategy - baseball is so much about strategy and the game is never over, so they really can't mess with that part of it without ruining the heart of the game.
But I still hate intentional walks in general. It feels like a cop out for pitchers who are afraid of batters.

I hope it gets better. Great news on the marathon front.

Thank you!

I also bought the AP logo pin and gave a $100 donation to the charity (that one was a last minute decision, but I'm happy with it), so there was money exchange.

Put in my NYC Half time (2:27:50) as POT, but hopefully that will be updated in a few weeks.

Let the freakouts begin...
(I already had one when I got the link. Just ask @jennamfeo, who got a text from me because I was too freaked out to register)

Yay!!! I was so excited and wanted to crawl under a rock and hide when I got my registration link.

Moment in time bobbleheads are a lot more fun than generic standing around or even dynamic pose bobbleheads. The Giants also have bobbleheads of current players in their college baseball days. I'm not sure I see the appeal of that unless you're a huge fan of the college where the player went to school.

And even setting aside my fan bias, AT&T Park is a beautiful place to watch a baseball game from.

But I still hate intentional walks in general. It feels like a cop out for pitchers who are afraid of batters.
In the heyday of Barry Bonds assault on the record books, fans used to hang rubber chickens along the wall in foul territory out in right field whenever he was walked, intentional or otherwise.

WOOHOO!!!! This is so exciting!

I'm officially part of the "first marathon at Disney in 2019" club now!

Yay!!! I was so excited and wanted to crawl under a rock and hide when I got my registration link.

Understandable. I was at work (getting ready to head out) and just completely losing it.

I will be here for you in any and all future freakouts. Text me whenever!

Thank you

I really have to get out there. I've only been to SF in the winter, so I've missed out on all the baseball.
I'd love to check out AT&T and the A's stadium (can't remember what it's called right now) on one trip, but I don't know how easy that is since I don't know how often they're home at the same time.

Ha. I love this.
