What was going on with the crowds at MK last night?

Been here a week. Worst crowds we’ve ever seen. Everywhere is insanely busy. We usually visit during summer or the holidays. Will never return in October again; these crowds are no fun.

It's been so interesting to see the crowd patterns shift over the last decade. Josh talks about this a lot on his site. When we first started taking family trips in the 2000's the summer was insanely crowded while the early fall and January through March were the best times to visit as the crowds thinned out and the temps cooled off.

It seems like Disney's efforts to even out the crowds year round combined with peoples desire to visit when it wasn't so hot has created a huge change. Now, many times in the summer the parks are dead and the old "best times to visit" are now mega crowded. WDW has basically become a year round destination where certain holidays and events drive crowd size much more than the seasonal calendar.

We were there 10/5-10/13 and it was definitely more crowded than I expected it to be but it was manageable. We did a ton of big ride walk ons with 30-40 min waits.

We went to Epcot all day Wednesday and it wasn’t really crowded then we hit MK around 730pm and stayed until 1am. Everything was a walk on during HEA then things picked up. After 11pm it got much better and we were able to ride pretty much everything but Peter Pan.

This was our first October trip and I’m pretty sure it will be our last. I’d much rather deal with spring break crowds in March (our normal trip time) than deal with this nasty hot weather and parks closing early.

Magic Kingdom on a non party night is typically nuts because everyone wants to see the fireworks that they can’t see on a party night with out buying tickets to the party.

Plus October has become popular

It was truly awful. The park was filthy and rides were braking for long periods of time. Disney needs to do a better job of taking care of the parks.

This really affects crowds, especially in the Magic Kingdom. It irritates me so much that when I do a little mini trip down to Orlando, I try to avoid party season which has gotten longer and longer (Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec).

and half of August...

As I mentioned on another thread, we tried going to Epcot at noon yesterday. Incredible crowds. I've lived in the area 14 years and have seen large crowds many times, but this was the worst I've seen for this time of year.

I was remembering just today that 2009 was the year when you could get into a WDW theme park for free on your actual birthday! For those of us who had annual passes, we received a gift card in the amount of a one-day park ticket - which was around $80.
In 2008 we got a buy 4 get 3 nights & tickets free deal AND we got a $100 gift card when we got there! Crazy!

Eeek we arrive on Thursday! all these posts are making me concerned. We went the same time frame last year and while there were crowds it was def doable. The worst is always MK on a HEA night but that is just because HEA is so limited due to the halloween party. I think next year may be our last October trip which is so sad because it use to be such a quiet time of year. I am giving October one more try next year with the hopes that many people are putting off their trips until nov/dec of next year for a guarantee to see star wars.
