Planning Breakfasts on the Cheap--Question about RP Room Amenities

Hi All--my family and I are are staying in a basic room at the Royal Pacific in January while visiting Universal, and I'm working on ways to save money on breakfasts and snacks in order to spend a bit more on the "big" meals. Obviously, portable snacks in my backpack in the park are a must, but in thinking about breakfast, I'm wondering what's the best plan for the room, since it looks like the complimentary continental breakfast only comes with the upgraded rooms.

I get the impression from reading up on things that basic rooms don't have a fridge or a microwave unless requested and paid for. Is this right? And if so, does anyone have any suggestions for good breakfasty things to keep around? We're flying Southwest, so we'll have plenty of room in our luggage for (non-liquid) food and snacks.

Am I also correct that the RP rooms have a Keurig in them? If so, I assume we'll be able to make hot water for instant oatmeal and similar things. Any other suggestions/thoughts?

(Also, while I'm thinking about it--do the room Keurigs use normal K-cups? If we could bring some from home, it'd probably save us some money, too!)

Thanks!

Yes, the rooms do have the small fridges. Microwaves for a fee. We pack instant oatmeal and disposable bowls to make it using hot water from coffee pot. Bagels, and pack small container of peanut butter. I like having breakfast in my room while I’m getting ready, it’s a real time saver. If I have to go out for breakfast, that means getting up earlier. It’s hard enough to get up, dealing with the 3 hr time change.

There is a fridge and a Keurig in the room. You can request a microwave for (I believe) $15 per day.

The Keurig takes regular cups - we bring ours from home.

We usually pick up instant oatmeal and cereal bowls, milk, some juice and a box of Cinnabon (from Citywalk when we arrive) to have breakfast in the room most days.

So, just to make sure I'm understanding correctly--there's an extra charge for the microwave, but the fridge is open and free to use as part of the basic room rate?

There’s a picture of the open fridge in the first post of the RPR stickie........

Gives you an idea of size.

Awesome! That opens up some breakfast cereal possibilities!

Part of me hates to be such a miser about things, but another part knows that it might be the thing that lets us have a big sushi meal downstairs one night! :)

My understanding is that they provide some, but my family drinks a lot of coffee at different points in the day, so we're just going to bring our own brand preference to make sure we have enough and it's a roast we like. :)

I'm the same way, but I can totally see my bottomless pit kids eating our entire meal budget in snacks. We're packing some Aldi staples in the suitcase then hitting publix/Aldi for the refrigerated stuff once we get there. We live so frugally at home I love to be able to splurge on vacation, but I'd much rather splurge on a daiquiri than a breakfast pastry.

I'm the only coffee drinker and just for two mornings, so this is good to know!

Things I've done in the past have included shipping a box of stuff from amazon pantry and order from Gardengrocer.com and ordered up actual groceries including milk and stuff. I've only used gardengrocer at Disney but I think they deliver to Universal hotels as well. We like to do milk and cereal, pop tarts (my kids will eat them cold), yogurts, and a bag of powdered sugar donuts. Then I order up things like pretzels and chips for snacks in the rooms as well.

The biggest money saver for me when using delivery of groceries is the bottled water, we are all water drinkers and the parks and hotels charge so much, I like having bottled water for in the room and to take a bottle in the park each day and just refill it as needed at water fountains or from a worker wherever they serve pop. They will give you water for free at counter service places but it is a tiny little cup that is difficult to take with you so I prefer having a bottle to refill. Don't underestimate the cost of drinks, especially in the Florida heat!

Garden Grocer does not deliver to Universal resorts, but I've used Instacart to get things delivered from Publix.

There is something to be said for eating foods or snacks from home, that you would normally eat, while you travel. If I get too 'off course' I can have a lot of trouble with my stomach while traveling....and NO BODY wants that! :flower:
