How do they assign cat. 1 seating?
I have a reservation for Sunday 11/25 4pm that I made at 180 days out.
A reservation for Friday 11/23 at 6:16 just opened up. I prefer Friday but do I have a better chance of being in the middle of the floor with the reservation I made 3 moths ago? Or do they just seat at random when you arrive at the door? Grandkids like to be right up front...

It was my understanding that the category determines the location.. but no guarantees where within that area/s. As I think it’s just randomly placed depending on party size versus when it was actually booked, because if there’s an opening .. you re in.
Enjoy.. such fun and yummy food.

Thanks, if the sunday show meant better seating because we booked it 3 months ago vs the friday show which i just booked yesterday. I would go for the better seating. By better seating, I mean up front center vs the back edge of the room... would arriving early affect your seating?

I always thought it was by category and within that by time you booked. We always booked right away category 1 and have front row center

chances will be better for closer seating by keeping the Sunday because seating is assigned when booking. but back of main floor is cat 2 seating I can not remember where cat 1 changes to cat 2 on main floor. arriving early will not affect where you sit as your table is already assigned. ps when cast is out in crowd they go all over the room including upstairs.

Agree with @Meriweather that the seating is based upon when you book. A suggestion, but you could amend your original reservation to the new date and may be able to keep the original booking date. We did this but we only added person (and had to change our category) and didn't change the date, but our reservation number remained the same and Guest Services told me the original booking date would prevail.

Seating is assigned within the categories by the date you book. The earlier you book the better your seats.

So the map I had said that category 1 seating was most of the main floor, category 2 was the last row of tables and the front facing balcony. So first thing is that you need to be sure you reserve category 1. That being said, I had booked cat 2 for my visit and was seated in the middle of the room. I guess not as many people booked cat 1 when I was going.

The category is when you book. How close you are seated depends on when you check in the day of the seating. Go the any guest services and request seat assignment first thing in the morning. We have always been seated within the first two rows from the stage using this method. It really does not matter too much. There is not really a bad seat in the house and the players make a couple of trips into the audience both upstairs and down during the show.

We always book at the 180 point for category 1 and always have first or second row. I never check in early, just when we arrive. I've been told the sooner you book, the better/closer seat.

Ha Ha, As I expected... contradicting advice.... seating order is a function of when you book OR when you show up the day of show... lol... As stated, all Category 1 seating is pretty good but would prefer to have the grandkids right up front and part of the show... 7yr old DGD has been twice, 4 yr old DGS is making his 1st Disney trip... Our Free dining starts on Saturday so we are paying for a meal on a free dinging day. Going on Friday would be on our 2 day room only booking , no free dining so have top pay for meal that day anyway.. Also Friday after thanksgiving is a busy day everywhere so a good day to pay for dining.. Blessed to be worrying about such a minor detail... All Packed and ready to fly down on Thanksgiving day... Temps will be in the TEENS here in Boston on Thanksgiving.... LOVE IT>>>

"Go the any guest services and request seat assignment first thing in the morning."

You’vebee lucky because this simply is not true
@TheRustyScupper is a CM who posts here, not as frequently as in the past. He had a role where he assigned tables at the HDDR. He often reiterated the process of assigning. 1It is done in advance and 2 Seating within a category is based on date and table size.

How do they assign cat. 1 seating?

HDDR/LUAU TICKET AND SEATING "411":
1) Tables are prioritized and assigned in each category by WHEN the ressie was made
. . . whether via phone or on-line or in-person at WDW.
. . . example: a Cat-1 ressie made in January gets a better table than ressie made in February
. . . example: a Cat-1 ressie made within 7-days of the show gets Cat-1 leftovers
2) Tables are manually assigned on 8th day before the show date (we sit in the ticket booth in the afternoon and manually prepare the seating chart for eight-days out and last-minute tickets).
3) Last minute ressies are assigned to the next open table in order.
4) There are no requests allowed for specific tables.
5) The earlier ressies are made, the better table location.
6) Exception: tables #044 & #045, are kept for last minute handicapped guests.
7) Table numbers do have meaning,
. . . EXAMPLE: table #052
. . . 0 = floor-level
. . . 5 = fifth-row-from-front
. . . 2 = second-table-from-left (when facing the stage)
8) Tables may be moved around to accommodate number of guests.
9) Only one family/group is usually seated per table. *
10) Distribution of tables and categories, prior to any combining of tables.
. . . Cat-1 tables are main floor back to row8, they are the best seats
. . . Cat-2 tables are the seven tables in row9 on main floor
. . . Cat-2 tables are the last four on left/right wings
. . . Cat-2 tables are the eight rear balcony tables facing stage
. . . Cat-3 tables are the eight tables on both balcony sides
. . . Cat-2 and Cat-3 tables may have posts in the viewing way **
. . . Cat-3 tables frequently require one-half of the table to turn around to see
11) DDP Credit Use
. . . 4:00pm show = 2TS for Cat-2 and/or Cat-3, no Cat-1 using DDP credits
. . . 6:15pm show = 2TS for Cat-2 and/or Cat-3, no Cat-1 using DDP credits
. . . 8:30pm show = 2TS for Cat-1, Cat-2 and/or Cat-3
12) Ticket Pick-Up:
. . . up to 7-days prior to show date at any Resort Concierge Desk or any Park Guest Services
. . . within 2-hrs prior to show-time only at HDDR Box Office at Fort Wilderness
. . . box office windows are to the left of Pioneer Hall at FW
.
* There are four large tables for big families. If there are no big families (which seldom happens), they will mix small families of 2-4 to fill the tables. This allows HDDR to maximize the seating, and revenue. If there are more than one group at the table, each group has its own "family style" menu items.
.
** I have assigned seats for HDDR, and feel badly when I had to put folks behind pillars or have the pillars in their line-of-sight.

Reviving a few weeks old topic, but since my question sorta fits the topic, I thought it better to do that than create a new one. Anyhow, here's the situation: For my trip coming up in Feb I've currently got a HDDR ADR for 2 which I originally made at 180+4. There's a slim chance I may need to add another 2 to the reservation (considering inviting a childhood friend who now lives in St. Cloud to meet up sometime, and that's a possibility for when and where). How much of an issue would this be? For instance, are there even 2-tops at this venue for me to have to worry about availability of switching to a 4-top? And would changing the size of my party affect my position in the table assignment priority list?
