Murphy Beds to Replace Sofa Beds at DVC Resorts

This change would make me more likely to buy. Do we think Riviera will have these? I'm intrigued by the resort - gondola ride away from Epcot with the full contract length, rumored to be fairly upscale - and my timeline could work to pickup a resale there.

I would assume Riviera would have these, yes. They've had them in the SSR test rooms for a while and a similar product is used at Pop Century so they've been aware of the concept.

It will definitely be a positive differentiating factor for Riviera if they do have them. Having two real beds in studios & 1 beds at a well-located resort is huge. Currently only available at OKW.

I know at BWV the sofa cushions are use by guests on the floor. They use to unhook them from the back but never hook them back on. If not hooked the front edge of the cushions keep sliding off the front and make for a very uncomfortable way to sit. I don't remember if the sofas were replace yet, we haven't been there lately.

But in BLT won't that make the room even smaller. Right now the sofa is up against the wall. Looks like you need a ft or so to house the bed part and then the sofa is in front of it.

I like the idea, but a studio in BLT is tight as it is now.

It looks like the when open the bed will probably not extend as far as it does on a traditional sofa sleeper. The sofa will be a bit further out because it will have the depth of the mattress behind it.

Starting with the SSR refurb next year they are switching to fold down murphy beds with a couch built in. This should be a huge improvement in comfort as they have a real (queen sized?) mattress.

Someone pointed out in a facebook thread that there will be room for 3 people with the chase part of the sofa.

We probably will never use it but I like the concept.

Love the Murphy style beds. Stayed at BWV and BCV recently and hated the the sofa beds. There is no room for all cushions and when they are on the sofa, they slide forward and slip off. This looks like a great solution for those problems.

sure hope if they get these new Murphy beds that the sofa pillows can not be removed. When they open the bed it looks like they are in a fixed position.

If that includes the sofa sleepers in the one bedrooms, I wonder where they will put them? They'll be blocking off a lot of windows at OKW, if that is true. WHereas, in studios the sofas are against a wall, that is not the case in one bedroom and larger units...and OKW studios already have two real queen sized beds.
I agree with Chuck on OKW. Unless they plan on blocking the windows in the living room, they'll have to come up with something else. There is no wall long enough for that bed in the OKW living rooms. And I still prefer the two real queen beds in the studio.

I thought about that, but there is no guarantee that the DVC ones will have the extra portion or chase lounge. Their couch has 3 cushions and the DVC sofas usually have only two cushions.

The picture of the one in the SSR refurb looks like it’s 3 cushions. And has chaise section. So it appears that at least SSR will have them in the larger villas. That’ll be nice so more occupants of the room can relax together and not have to rely so much on the chairs for the table or breakfast bar.

Interestingly the photos on the news website I am banned from mentioning on here, shows in the 1 beds the sleeper sofa has three seating areas with a Chaise/ footstool on the third which remains intact when the bed is folded down. This will be very handy as it will give a seat when the bed is down, and maybe you could have a child sleep across it. The studio one though seems to just have 2 seats.

If you look at the Inova website, they have multiple varieties of murphy beds. And plenty without the chaise lounge addition. In most of the studios, I don't see how they can fit that with the queen bed. And in plenty of the one bedrooms, it will be hard to fit the model with the chaise lounge on the wall with the access to the bedroom if there is a dining table there. Unless they remove the end tables, too.

The only way I can see them putting a Murphy in an OKW one bedroom unit is to relocate the thermostat, move the sleeper chair to where the love seat is now, and not fold out the remaining sofa. Pretty awkward. And considering OKW is just finishing up a refurbishment, I just don't see those modifications being made anytime soon.

Yeah, but remember, the fold out sofa at OKW is queen size, not double. They either need to remodel the living room and remove the beautiful windows, or as I said earlier, relocate the thermostat in every unit. And then the Murphy would not be in a good location in the room. It may work at other resorts, but it just doesn't fit well into OKW.

They do offer sleeper sofas with gel mattresses now not just the memory foam. Maybe that might be an option at OKW. But we don't have to worry about that for at least six or seven years.

They could remove the love seat and add another sleeper chair and then get one of the sleeper sofas that only make into a twin bed, so you sleep sideways on the sofa instead of head to foot like the queen sized ones.

Since it sounds like these went into Pop and since the OKW refurb hasn’t been going on all that long it would be my guess that they decided this couldn’t fit in or OKW would be the first getting them instead of SSR.

I wonder what people would think though if they had decided to change the studios there and add this in place of one of the queen beds? It appears like it’s a very good replacement for a real bed and would have given old key west studios a couch option for those who don’t use both beds. It might even have enough width to hold the full unit with the chase lounge set up.

Personally, I would hate it. OKW is the only studio we ever stay in, especially for our short stays. OKW doesn't have a long enough wall for the big screen television in the studio, so there really isn't a point for having the sofa. Two beds work fine. And, since it is the only studio with two real beds, why change it? It gives guests a option for two beds or one bed and one slab.
