Do you prefer a patio or a balcony and why?

I always thought I wanted a balcony. We like to use it during our stay and will relax with coffee or a glass of wine, depending on the time of day. WHen we stayed at the Poly I requested connecting rooms and balcony, but that request could not be met. We were given connecting rooms, which was our priority, and patios. I was prepared to hate it, but surprise! We felt liek we had an extended living room. WHat a lovely space to use, open to the air, but secluded by lush greenery, we had a gorgeous garden spot to relax and to provide privacy to those in the room. Best wish not granted was that patio vs balcony.

Same as above. I thought I wanted a balcony, but the patio (at least at the Poly) was my favorite part of the room! It felt like so much more space than a balcony, and we had cute little Disney bunnies hopping by which my daughter loved!

Yes, the bunnies and ducks were a definite extra for my family as well.

It depends on the resort. If the first floor rooms have a sidewalk in front of them, like most of the garden view rooms at the Beach Club, then no, I don't want the patios. People walk right past your room and can see into it. But if it is a patio with a grassy area in front of it, then yes, I love them. :) We have had the patio with a water view at the BC twice and it was wonderful because it had a huge grassy area in front of it. :)

Balcony. I love having a nice high view.

Balcony on the highest floor possible. It’s quieter. There’s a view. And I can open the heavy curtains for light while we are getting ready without worrying.

It depends on the resort and location of the room. We've had patios at both Poly and BCV, but our rooms happened to be in remote location (Fiji, luau cove side at Poly and along a quiet wooded path at BCV). They were both lovely. I particularly liked the patio at that location at Poly as, at night, I could simply go out my patio door, sit on the luau cove beach and watch the fireworks. I would not, however, want a patio room on the pool side of Rarotonga or along the path heading toward to EP at BC. Way too much foot traffic for me.

Balcony. I feel like it’s safer, more private, and I won’t find lizards in my room or ducks all over the patio. ( this has happened to us before) On the flip side, it is nice to be able to walk right outside for a bit too!

Porch at OKW. It's big enough to have a round table and four chairs and still room to walk around. It's not just the little narrow standup balcony or the one with two chairs and a tiny table side by side.

No patio. Doesn't have to be a balcony, just not ground floor.

One time while on a non-Disney trip, someone tried to break into our room via the patio doors [they were unsuccessful, because we had the security locks on, though they caused damage]. Since then I refuse to stay in ground-floor rooms, including at Disney.

High floor at BWV for view, porch at OKW as it’s huge, Fireworks view at the Dolphin, doesn’t matter at BCV, but didn’t like the porch at BC, too exposed so it was useless. We use the balcony a lot.

Sorry to hear that, thankfully you had the additional locks on. Even on vacation, there can be thefts and breakins unfortunately which is the last issue anyone wants to deal with when you are there to enjoy and unwind!

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I rarely go out on either one, so I guess I'd have to say it doesn't matter to me. I do like being high up though, so I guess I'd say balcony (which I probably wouldn't go out on).

I'll tell you a balcony I like--the Club Level balcony at Boardwalk. Nice view and really pleasant place to hang out.

Our preference varies:
I like patios when staying with children, especially if it allows access to a grassy area outside (like GW rooms at the CR). OTOH, if just DH and me, then we like a high floor with balcony for the view.

But we like either one, either way, just fine. have stayed with and enjoyed both.
