what is the best strategy to rope drop Peter Pan? What is the wait usually at that time?

You'll be lead up to the hub before 9am/8am/opening. Queue up on the left side of the Castle(where they let breakfast ARDs in) and wait. Then walk quickly but politely to PP! A large part of that RD crowd will be on the right side of the hub heading for 7DMT, and there may be a few heading for 7DMT on your side.

Upmost left path in this picture. Make SURE you turn sharp right to follow the left side of the castle into Fantasy Land.

Three Routes to Peter Pan.
If the "through the castle route" (green) is closed, choose whichever of the others you prefer.
"West of the castle" path (blue) may be a bit shorter than the Liberty Square (orange) route,
but how the CMs open the ropes may affect which way you can go the earliest.

What is the best time to get through the tapstyles to have a reasonable wait for Mine Train?

What is the best time to get through the tapstyles to have a reasonable wait for Mine Train?

Main St. opens at 8AM when MK is scheduled to open at 9AM.
Guests are held in the Hub until 9AM, then released to head to attractions.

If we get there at 8, is there time to stop for a quick breakfast or does the area in front of SDMT rope fill in quickly?

Much easier than SDMT, we got to the MK gate at 8:30am on a 9:00am opening day (CL 8), and were lined up on left side of castle by 8:40 waiting for the rope drop, we walked on at 9:02am, 4 adults and 2 little kids.

I get to MK about 30 minutes prior to RD.
Stand to the left in front of the castle.
Wait 10 minutes or less at PP.
Its really only that long because people stop in the line to look at everything.

This all seems so complicated. In early June, we strolled up to Peter Pan right after the fireworks show. The posted wait was 40 minutes, but there were only about 10 people in line and the wait was less than a minute.

We rope dropped Peter Pan on Saturday using the orange path in Robo’s map above. We left Pop at 7:45 and were in the hub about 8:25. We were about three groups back from the rope, lost a little ground during the walk, and boarded our ship at 9:04. When we got out five minutes later, the standby line was at 40 minutes and I think that was accurate because the full queue was open when we walked through it and it looked close to full. We rode again with a 9:15 FP and stand-by jumped to 60 minutes during that time. 30 minutes later it was at 90 minutes.

It was the first day it was open after the short refurbishment but that is how Peter Pan is. Being quick at rope drop is totally worth it if you don’t have a FP or want to ride more than once. Alternative is usually very end of the day.

Well we are traveling with a 3 year old so that’s not an option. Without a FastPass, we have to rope drop it.

All kids react differently at Disney World. For mine, it was always easier to let them stay up late than to make them get up early.

One of my fondest memories is chasing my then 3 year old daughter back to the entrance of Space Mountain moments before midnight with her screaming “One More Time Daddy” all the way.

If you rope dropped PP, and then went straight to Mine Train, what would you expect the wait to be? This would be next week, February 12.

Has anyone had any experience going through the castle to rope drop Peter Pan? Thought it would be a great experience for our first MK day. Watch the show and then begin the day going through the castle. Is there much of a delay?
