The Picky Kid and Foodie Mom (with less tiny tummy) Return!... and eat! Updated: Epcot!

Awesome! We tried sunshine seasons last time for strawberry shortcake and liked it. Never eaten a full meal there but looks good for CS! I’m not sure I have space for it next trip though, lol

I love food festivals! We liked the one at DL during Christmas and ate two meals there! That beef Wellington and scallop looks yummy! How I wish they had a festival in Epcot for the summer!

Need to hit Ample Hills when we go... a few times! All the flavours sound great! Which one did you like most?

You are on an updating roll! Garden Grill is on my list of places to try. It gets great reviews. Odd they changed the pre-park opening process. And SO odd on the wine at Sunshine Seasons. Both the policy overall and the attitude. You are the second person I’ve seen today to mention the poutine. That’s definitely on my must-try list!

Joining in now . You're hiring a lot of the places we'll visit later this month (!!!) so it's a fun preview Congrats on the weight loss!

So apparently while you can buy booze all the heck over Epcot and walk around like a drunken jerk all you want, if you try to buy two sealed containers of wine from Sunshine Seasons, you will be treated like a criminal.

This made me laugh but seriously, how ridiculous of that CM. I guess their rules are their rules, but no need to be obnoxious about it :rolleyes2

I'm always excited for Garden Grill, but now you have me REALLY excited!

Kind of annoying about the timing of them letting you in. I have an 8am next month, so I guess I better be prepared.

I know at sport arenas they have to open the wine/beer because it becomes a weapon you can throw otherwise. Although now that I think about it an unopened 20oz bottle of diet coke would be the same thing and I know they don't open those.

I know you aren't supposed to bring alcohol outside of Epcot with you, which I think includes unopened bottles of wine (you're supposed to send back to your resort). Maybe that's why?
Oh I am sure there was SOME reasonable explanation but she was just so unDisney about it. "I don't care WHAT you do with it." Excuuuuuuuse me! That could be the reason though, maybe everything in Epcot has to be served opened. For anyone on the DDP be aware!

I think it is too hot for a festival. I am not sure I liked one more than the other, I liked them both. The dark chocolate has no "stuff" in it and it was just a rich chocolate, not super dark. The brittle one had "stuff" in it and was a bit sweeter. I liked them together :) and they let you mix two flavors in the "single" that qualifies for the DDP!

Totally, got a whole day knocked out! GG is one of our favorites for breakfast, but I like the basics too. If you want something fancy it's not the place for you, but the character interaction is amazing and when kiddo was younger I was all about the family style character meals.

The pre-park thing really took me by surprise and man did it annoy me, as did that cashier!

The poutine is huge and pretty good and one of the few savory snack credit items on the DDP not at AK!

Thanks! I will try to get through as much as I can but if you have any specific questions you can always drop me a PM and i'd be happy to answer even if i haven't gotten to it yet!

I know, right? it just annoyed me so much but I found a way around it ;)

yes, I would have been less antsy if I expected it and also if I knew the timing would work out just fine (and it did!)

They’re pretty strict about not letting you leave the park with alcohol. When they’ve offered dole whips with or without alcohol, I get it without. But without fail, I get stopped on my way out & asked about it. Luckily, I’ve had very nice CMs asking, but I’d have been upset too if that wasn’t the case. However, this last trip I did have a unfortunate encounter with 2 very salty/crabby CMs. Just had to try & shrug it off & move on, though it did dampen my mood for a little while.

Day 3: Roaring Fork Breakfast

So I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but we split our stay between VWL and the Poly, so while we were at VWL the kiddo REALLY wanted to try their chicken and waffles for breakfast after reading reviews about it online. Since the kid is such an early riser, we were up pretty early and had time to grab breakfast at Roaring Fork before even the 8am EMH at AK.

I paid for this meal OOP as I had other plans for those QS credits and I had refillable mugs, which I used every morning for coffee.

Here is the kid with his long anticipated

Chicken and Waffles
starring Mickey-shaped Waffles with Pecan Butter and Maple Syrup

What can I say except these were as amazing as they looked? The chicken is breaded and fried but NOT the typical thick coating disney chicken tenders/nuggets (which btw are like crack to me, that is not an insult, I LOVE those things) but it was nice to have a lighter coating at breakfast time. The waffles were hot crisp and fresh. The pecan butter was nutty and buttery and the syrup was good. This was an amazing dish, I ate an ear off a waffle with a bite of chicken tender and some butter and syrup. oh man. The kid devoured the rest.

I had the
10-Hour Pulled Pork-Cheese Grits
Chipotle-Apple Barbecue Sauce served with a Poached Egg

20190119_071728.jpg

Here it is shown with a hole poked in the yolk already.

This was pretty soso actually for a few reasons.
1) while I appreciate a good runny yolk, I do NOT like runny white. BLECH. You can see at the bottom how it's translucent and running over the pork and I really found that very very unappealing. I have had plenty of poached eggs that did not do that so I don't know what the deal is but I found this to be consistent across Disney poached eggs. Do. Not. Like.
2) there was not much pork, like there was no pork under the egg, just what you see exposed is what is there - a few stringy chunks. I don't eat carby sides outside of vacation/special occasions but when I do I take a bite consisting of both the side and the main together and when I did that with this, I had a TON of grits left over. I was feeling kind of blechy because of the egg. Here is the amount of grits left when I was done with the pork and egg (you can see that runny white all over it)

20190119_072729.jpg

IMO way too much ratio of filler to protein, but it was only $7.99 so I guess it's ok and it was plenty for me to eat in the morning, I did not leave hungry.

So overall I would rate Roaring Fork a B for counter service. The kid's was amazing but mine was pretty meh.

Up next: Tusker House Lunch or "SALMON AGAIN!?"

I guess that makes sense but she didn't have to be such a you-know-what about it. My mood only lasted as long as it took to figure out a way around it and I ultimately did not leave the park with it anyway, I drank it while waiting for the Broadway show, so I guess the Disney cops won't be coming to get me!

Great review of Crystal Palace! We've only ate dinner there once, but it was at the very end of then night so the food wasn't as fresh as it could have been - but the breakfast we did there was great! We do have a reservation for our upcoming trip to give it another shot!

Nutella on tater tots - your kid might be a culinary genius! That actually sounds fantastic, and I'm now going to have to try that if I ever go to Garden Grill for breakfast...

That pork from Sunshine Seasons is great! I've been impressed by it every time I've had it! Very odd about the rude cast member though, forcing you to open your wine all the way...

You can never go wrong with poutine! This is coming from a Canadian, where it's a very common staple in our diets :rotfl:

Yum, Ample Hills! I don't even eat ice cream very often, but that stuff is delicious! I actually worked in an ice cream break in to our wedding day, and the cast members at Ample Hills were amazing once I walked in there wearing a wedding dress haha. Of course, my bridesmaids then took it from me after a few bites because they were scared it would drip on my dress, and we weren't finished with pictures :rotfl:

Those chicken fingers looks fantastic! I'll definitely keep those in mind if we ever stay there!

Oh good, I’m glad I found your new thread! I’ve read your old ones and many of your other posts and always find them helpful—I have one kid with ADHD and one with some sensory and gross motor issues, so I appreciate you being so real and open about your experiences.

I can’t wait to sit down later and read what you’ve written so far! Thanks for sharing your reviews.

Lisa, I mentioned how much I love your dining reports in another thread and I’m excited to read this one! Congratulations on your weight loss. You and your son look like you had an amazing trip together.

I think you have officially talked me into Garden Grill breakfast

Now I want Ample Hills. And the cinnamon buns from Garden Grill. Oh and tater tots too.

I do NOT want that churro ice cream "sandwich". Ever. Again.

Love reading your dining reports! So here I am!

You look amazing and looking forward to hearing about the rest of the trip!

You need to stop doing laundry so I don't fall so far behind :P

won't lie, this meal has been one of our favorites on both of our last trips... which to me, sets up high expectations, which raises the chances of disappointment. I try not to repeat TOO many things because I find that between trips your estimation of how great it was last time grows and the experience has bigger and bigger shoes to fill every time
Oh I so do this too. I build up things that we love and in the end I usually just set myself up for disappointment. Glad to hear this wasn't your case though!

asked a CM how you're supposed to make an 8am breakfast if they won't let you in until 8am and he said "they know at the restaurant." yeah well, I booked it at 8am so that we could be seated at 8am so we could have time to get on Soarin'. So I was super edgy waiting and not real happy about the change in process.
That is ridiculous! Why would they have a procedure that makes you intentionally late.

(I do NOT run for anything at Disney
Be and you both! :D

in my experience the sticky bun thing is kind of hit or mess depending on how fresh it is even at PPO. My kid is less picky than I am so always loves it, but me being not much of a sweets person, I am VERY fussy about that kind of a thing. I will say that this time the sticky bun was the best we'd ever had. Fresh, warm, loaded with icing. YUM. This should mean a lot from a not super into sweets person!
We've only done this once and unfortunately it was close to the end of breakfast time. Our bun was decidedly not fresh. We'll have to give it another go close to opening time.

Honestly, this is the BEST experience we've had at Garden Grill breakfast yet.
:love::love::love: Not helping my will not to eat breakfast this morning but it looks amazing.

Also I had read that you can get up to two boozy drinks with one adult buying 2 meals on the DDP so I figured this was a good place to try that.
Well there is one benefit to the kiddo being an adult :-)

These both look delicious! Sunshine Seasons is one of our favorite counters services. Everything is always so fresh and nothing like most counter services.

was a little taken aback by the super obnoxious tone, so like any mature grownup person, I started to act like a passive aggressive child. I just barely cracked them open and she practically yelled at me that I had to open them all the way. I cracked them open a little more and she said "YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE WHOLE THING OFF RIGHT NOW!!!!" By now I'm getting really ticked off, being completely unable to consume that much liquid and also a meal at the same time but also my food was getting cold so I just took the lids off, still a little gobsmacked at the whole exchange.
That is ridiculous!!!!!

BUT I had the last laugh... we had a water bottle with just a few sips left and I dumped the rest in the trash (because by now I'm SUPER annoyed and not about to take even one extra step to find a sink) and poured my wine into my Dasani bottle, which I then carried around with me for the rest of the afternoon, not caring if people thought I was carrying around a bottle of pee with me.

:worship::worship::worship::worship::worship: Absolutely brilliant! #WineGoals

The picky kid won't eat seafood but my friend's son will so we split this 3 ways. It was good, but I get amazing scallops here out of cape cod and nantucket bay so I am hard to impress with them. Honestly I don't remember anything about it except that it was "good." My friend paid for this OOP.
I'm sure it can't even touch what you can get but I am excited to try this.

Josh at easywdw, whose opinions I greatly enjoy,
I love him too. Did you see he has a new podcast? I haven't listened yet but its called Walt Loved Podcasting so I'm guessing from the name it will be just as brilliant and sarcastic as his website.

20190118_193755-jpg.380197

and predictably he LOVED it.
Yum!!! Kudos to the picky kid for stepping out of his comfort zone and trying some new things!

As I said, ice cream is my favorite thing and ample hills did NOT disappoint.
Oh these look so good. Can you believe we stayed at the Boardwalk last year and somehow never made it here? I should be kicked off the DIS for that :P

I'l be staying here in May and must try this.

That egg definitely looks too runny, but executed better this would be right up my alley!

I can’t believe I missed out on another of your wonderful DR’s beginnings. I will catch up, I promise! Congratulations again on your weight loss. Of course I think you look beautiful in both the before and after pictures but I know that 140 lbs was hard fought and kept off! So glad to see you’re back!!!
