August weather-what to bring

Hi We are headed to Disneyland the first week in August. Someone told me it gets very hot in the summer. We typically go to Disneyworld in August so I thought the lack of humidity might make it more tolerable in Disneyland? Will we still need the cooling towels, spray bottles etc.? Anything else we might need there that we don't in Florida.

We've done both DL and WDW in August. There is absolutely no comparison between the two, CA weather is hot, FL weather is unbearable.

Cooling towels and spray bottles will not go amiss in CA but we never found them to be must haves. You can, however, leave the rain gear at home! Out of all of our DL trips, we have yet to see rain even once.

I remember August being humid last year. Even at 8 am rope drop I remember being all sticky. I doubt it will be as bad as Florida humidity, but still bring cooling towels, water bottles and spray bottles. I always saw people using them. And check the weather right before you leave.

This thread has good information and data comparisons for DLR vs. WDW weather-wise: Detailed Weather Data for DLR. August at DLR is usually pretty warm to downright hot. And it can get humid, but not like Orlando humid. The cooling towels and fans will come in handy because DLR queues aren't all in the shade or covered. Bring sunscreen that you like and apply it often. Clothes that breathe and wick work well. Hats to protect the back of your neck if you have short hair. You shouldn't need rain gear. We can get the occasional thunderstorm, but it's not common. If you can survive WDW in August, you should be fine at DLR. Cups of ice water are free at most CS locations, so that can help keep you hydrated and cool you down, too.

IMO DLR beats WDW in the weather category in the summer by a landslide. DLR does have times it is super hot, and on some occasions is humid, but more often than not summer weather is pretty darn good.

Personally I bring water bottles on hot days, usually disposable ones. When my kids were young we did spray bottles in the summer.

FWIW the only time of year I prefer Florida weather to SoCal weather is the Feb-April time frame.

Last August was unusually humid for us. We were at DLR one day when the humidity was in the 30's -- that's bad for us out here! It was muggy and sticky -- and our friends were complaining that they never fully dried out from water rides. So quick drying clothes were a must.

I hate the heat. I'm from the south and go to WDW regularly and am used to lots of heat and humidity. I came to DL in August and couldn't believe how cool it was. I still wore shorts and tshirts exclusively, but I stayed at an air bnb that didn't even have AC and I was fine at nights. I couldn't believe it.

I mean, it varies - could be in the low 80s, could be in the high 90s, could be something totally unexpected. As you keep an eye on the weather leading up to your trip, if it looks like you're coming during a heat wave, I'd bring the towels and fans - definitely people were using them last August, which was much more humid than normal. I don't think you'd need anything that you don't need in Florida, though.

Thanks for mentioning theride queues!

Thank you everyone! Does it ever get cool at night where I would need a sweater or is that wishful thinking? lol I will definetely check right before we leave! So excited! I haven't been there since I was 13!

DLR in Aug is definitely the place to be. It's hot, but average rainfall is as close to 0 as can be, and all you need are shorts and t-shirts.

I remember last Aug being considered humid but I did not notice any humidity whatsoever. The weather was amazing. We rarely go to DLR because of the distance, but we are going back this Aug because we had such a great time last year.

As for the evenings, some people might want to throw on a light sweatshirt, but I think most people would be fine without.

I have had it be that cool (needing a light sweater) in every summer month! But that is not at all common. My typical summer day is out the door by 6:30 or 7:30 in shorts and a tee-short, and that is good until midnight!

You can check the average weather in the previous link I gave or see this link specifically for DLR: "Detailed Weather Data for DLR" www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=23004158

It was hot and California humid when I was there last August. Lots of sun block, a jar and shorts. Make sure to hydrate!!! I would drink 80-100 ounces a day pretty easily. Cooling towels help. I got desperate on a really hot day and dipped my hat into the water on POTC to help cool off.

I will say I got really dehydrated one day on our August DLR trip vs my August WDW trips because I couldn't feel that I was sweating as much and I wasn't drinking enough water, so definitely hydrate, Hydrate, HYDRATE.

(Once we sat down in the shade and I drank an entire Venti water from Starbucks plus everything that was left in my Hydroflask and relaxed for a bit I was fine but early prevention is better than recovery for sure)

Disneyland can get HOT in Aug, but it's a "dry heat".... Some years we have had to get a sweater in the evenings.

I (almost always) bring a light jacket or sweater because a/c in shows, shops, and restaurants can be a stark contrast to the heat outside. Also, if you will be waiting for evening shows (especially by the water, like F! or WOC) or parades, it can be surprising how quickly you can get chilly by just sitting or standing still for a long period of time. You can always store your gear in a locker during the day when you don't need it. (And a jacket or hoodie to sit on comes in very handy on Matterhorn -- just saying!)

I keep a very light sweater/cover up type deal in my purse and put it on if we enter a building with a/c including most rides. I used to get a cold on almost every trip because I get chilled very easily and this has helped sooooo much! Because of my natural chill I often need a bit more of a sweater in the evening too lol.

I'm like this, too! So you'll find me wearing silk thermals, even in summer, to keep my core temp even as we go from cold rides, cold shops, cold restaurants, then back out to hot summer.

My sister and I have decided we're actually cold blooded and need the sun for heat... which isn't helping me at all with our current temps lol

I'm glad I asked! In Florida I pack all tanks and I have never needed a jacket in August, I welcome the cold air! :rotfl2:Thank you!!
